"Heavy heart": Susie O'Neill breaks down as she resigns live on air

Olympic swimmer turned radio host Susie O'Neill has broken down live on air as she announced her resignation from her role with the Brisbane Nova breakfast show.

The 51-year-old tearfully told her co-hosts David 'Luttsy' Lutteral and Ashley Bradnam that she would be taking a step back from radio after 10 years with the network.

"I do this with a heavy heart, the decision wasn't easy. It's hard for me to articulate exactly why I'm leaving," Susie began.

"Turning 50 last year, I realised I'm at a whole new stage in my life. The next chapter will see me pursue other goals, both professionally and personally."

Susie added that she was already contemplating what her next career moves would be, as she reassured listeners that she would stay on the air for another six weeks, with her final show being on November 28th.

"I want to get back to the grassroots of sport and involve myself in the wider community. It's going to be an emotional final day, saying goodbye to everyone," she said.

"Whatever this next chapter brings, my Nova family won't be far away."

She went on to thank both of her co-hosts a she reflected on her time on the show, saying, "Thanks to Ash and Luttsy for bringing me into your world and life a bit over 10 years ago now, when I pretty much had nothing going on in my life to be honest."

"I joked that it saved my life at the time. You were both so supportive of me. I was horrible at radio and I’d be upset and say, 'I can’t do it' and you would say, 'no, just keep going, just keep going'."

Co-host Luttsy was quick to pay tribute to Susie, saying, "It's been an incredible adventure becoming great mates with you. Can't wait to see your next chapter."

Before joining the world of radio in 2023 as a sports broadcaster, Susie rose to fame at the age of just 14, joining the Olympic team and going on to score 35 Australian titles and retiring after the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

Swimming legend Susie O'Neill breaks world record at 50 years of age

Susie O'Neill has broken a world record at the age of 50 in a triumphant return to international swimming at the World Masters Swimming Championships in Japan.

The two-time Olympic gold medallist won the 50m butterfly, breaking the world record and championship record for the 50-54 age group.

She touched out Britain’s Michelle Ware record by 0.52sec, with a time of 29.08 seconds, securing gold for her age group.

The swimmer nicknamed Madame Butterfly during her career, proved that she's still got it after winning her first competition and butterfly race since the Sydney Olympics in 2000.

This comes two months after she set another record when she swam an excellent time at the Masters championships in Queensland as part of her 50th birthday celebrations, which qualified her for the world championships.

She agreed to compete at the relay event in the Masters championships to celebrate her 50th, with her Nova 106.9 Breakfast co-hosts Ash Bradnam and David Lutteral, plus one of their listeners.

In a post-swim interview O'Neill told her co-hosts: “I felt like vomiting at the end to be honest,”

“In the olden days I was nervous before the race, but I was calmer when I went out behind the block. This was like the opposite. I was calm before, but as I walked out behind the blocks I got a bit dishevelled compared to normal. Really jittery.

“It was time to go out, and my goggles had come apart. My hands were shaking - and I couldn’t put my goggles on because they came apart at the nose-piece.

“So, I had to get a lady to help me, and the girl that I ended up just beating was trying to calm me down. My nerves hit me really, really badly.”

“I got a massive surge of adrenaline, and I reckon it helped me,” she said.

O'Neill added that she initially didn't realise she had broken a record.

“I wasn’t sure when I first finished.”

Despite the challenges, the swimming legend relished in the camaraderie with a few swimmers that she had met in the past.

“I met so many people in the marshalling area that I knew. For example, there was a Canadian girl in that race, and we swapped clothes in 1989 when we came to Japan for the Pan Pacific Games,” she said.

The swimmer told Channel 7’s Sunrise that this was a one-off and she has no plans to continue racing.

Images: Instagram

EXCLUSIVE: Susie Burrell shares tips for getting your Omega-3

Looking after our health is incredibly important, especially as we start to get older.

From exercising regularly and having healthy sleeping habits to maintaining our social lives and eating well, there are plenty of areas we need to balance out in order to stay healthy.

When it comes to diet, ensuring we get the right vitamins and minerals can be particularly crucial as we age.

To help figure out how to get the most out of your diet and improve your mental and physical health, we sat down with leading dietician and Tassal ambassador, Susie Burrell, and asked her some foodie questions.

O60: What are the benefits of regularly eating foods rich in Omega-3 and B vitamins, especially as we get older?

As we get older, it’s important to regularly eat foods that are rich in Omega-3 and B group vitamins as they can help to support cognitive function, support energy regulation, and optimise immunity. A high intake of Omega-3 fats is associated with improved memory, reduced risk of developing heart disease and reductions in inflammation. In addition, B group vitamins - including B12, folate, biacin, biotin, and riboflavin - are essential for older people as they support healthy nerve function, heart health and blood pressure.

O60: How can diet impact mental health and energy levels?

While it’s widely known that diet plays a key role in our physical health, it can directly affect our mental health and energy levels too.

The connection between our diet and mental health stems from the relationship between our brain and gut microbiome - the rainforest-like ecosystem in your gastrointestinal tract where good and bad bacteria reside. Eating healthy food will promote the growth of good bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract, which tells our brain to produce neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine, regulating our mood and emotions.

One of the other things your good bacteria does is help absorb nutrients from the food you eat, including B vitamins, magnesium and iron, which are crucial for good energy levels. The bad bacteria has the opposite effect, and when they overgrow, the absorption of these nutrients is compromised. If the nutrients that are key for maintaining healthy energy levels are not adequately absorbed, then greater tiredness and fatigue is likely to follow. That’s why our diet is one of the main factors that affect this balance between the good and bad bacteria, and in turn, our energy levels.

Image: Supplied

O60: What other essential vitamins and fats should we be consuming more of?

Calcium and vitamin D are also important nutrients older Australians should be consuming, as they work closely together to support our bone health. As we know, calcium helps build and maintain healthy bones, while vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium. These nutrients can be found in foods such as dairy, dark leafy greens, and a variety of fish, like Tassal Tasmanian Salmon.

With many of us still in lockdown and juggling work, home-schooling, and other responsibilities, what are some quick and easy ways to add more Omega-3 to our diets?

A quick and easy way to incorporate more Omega-3’s into our diets is by consuming a variety of vegetables, fruits, nuts, and beans, and with two or more weekly servings of oily fish, such as salmon. I love to start my mornings with a nutritious, balanced, and mood-boosting meal, especially while we’re in lockdown, which is why I regularly have salmon for brunch.

When brainstorming brunch ideas, you can be really creative. Rather than sticking to traditional options such as toast, cereal, porridge or eggs, switching to salmon will not only provide you with a nutrient rich breakfast option, but also get the entire family involved in creating something exciting and different. Some of my favourite brunch-inspired salmon recipes are Tassal’s Corn Fritters or SLT Sandwich with either Tassal Smoked Salmon or cooked and ready-to-eat Tassal Hot Smoked Salmon.

Image: Getty Images

Diana's former butler sadly reveals what The Crown got right

The Crown is quickly becoming one of the most talked about shows of 2020.

Ever since Season 4 dropped on November 12, there has been endless discussions over everything from Gillian Anderson’s depiction as Margaret Thatcher to the very Spanish representation of Australia.

But the biggest talking point is the accuracy of the show, particularly when talking about the relationship between Prince Charles and Princess Diana.

Diana’s former butler Paul Burrell has given his two cents, claiming most of what was seen on the show is true, and that the producers could have “gone further” with it.

"Josh O'Connor plays Prince Charles as a rather uncaring, cold person. And I'm afraid that's what I saw behind closed doors," Burrell tells The Sun.

"He was married to probably the most beautiful woman in the world. But he didn't look after her, and that's what comes across in The Crown."

The show’s depiction of Charles and Diana’s marriage suggests things were rocky from the very beginning, with the princess feeling unsupported by her husband new royal in-laws.

Infidelity is also shown on both sides, with a particular focus on Charles’ ongoing closeness with Camilla Parker Bowles, whom he is now married to.

But many royal experts and those close to the Prince have taken issue with it, saying it is “trolling on a Hollywood budget”.

But Burrell believes the portrayal didn’t go far enough, revealing a moment that didn’t make it into the script.

"I would have put in another scene with Prince Charles telling Diana when she comes downstairs wearing a beautiful black-and-white dress, just to please him, and he said to her, 'You look like you belong to the mafia'," he added.

The royal family has not addressed the show directly, though it is believed that they’re concerned.

Paul Burrell claims Prince Harry “taking a leaf out of Princess Diana’s book”

After constantly appearing in the press for the wrong reasons, the Duchess of Sussex’s father Thomas Markle is currently in an estranged relationship with his daughter.

Staging paparazzi photos, sitting down with the press and discussing a private conversation he had with Prince Harry and as of recent – comparing the royal family to Scientologists, claiming that they’re a cult. These are just a few of the ways Duchess Meghan’s father has embarrassed her since her wedding in May.

Now, Princess Diana’s former Butler of 10 years Paul Burrell is speaking out, saying that the Prince is doing exactly what his mother would have done.

Claiming that the “apple doesn’t fall far from the tree”, Burrell says that Diana would have been “furious” over the situation, and Harry seems to be feeling the same way.

Speaking to New!, Burrell said: “I’ve been in similar situations where people said things about Princess Diana, and the way she dealt with it was by freezing them out.

“It looks as if Harry has taken a leaf out of his mother’s book.

“Diana said: ‘Once someone burns the bridge of trust towards you it’s very hard to repair it’.”

The former butler, who has since appeared on the reality show I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here says that Meghan is fortunate to have “a man stood beside her who truly adores her”, something “Diana never had”.

Princess Diana’s infamous marriage with Prince Charles was clouded with problems and ended in divorce in 1996.

Speaking from experience, Burrell says that life is “not going to be easy” for the Duchess, but as long the Prince is standing by her side, they’ll learn to get through it together.

Burrell has come out in the past to say that while the fame can seem great from afar, the Duchess should “be careful what she wishes for” because “sometimes it is not all that it seems.”

However, he feels for Thomas Markle, saying he “doesn’t know how to behave, he is lost.”

“I think the best thing he could do is stay quiet and try and reach out to his daughter,” he said. “Somebody has to fix it. Before it gets more broken.

“Thankfully Meghan’s mother has survived with dignity and style and that’s the way forward.”

“How I kept the weight off”: Susie Elelman reveals secret to her weight loss

Susie Elelman is not only one of Australia’s most beloved media personalities, but she’s also one of the nation’s biggest weight loss success stories.

At her heaviest, Elelman weighed around 135 kg. But it wasn’t until she was shamed for her weight that she decided to make a change.

Now, over a decade since she released her first best-selling book Half My Size, Elelman has beat the odds and kept her 50-plus kilos off, and she’s got a new book to share her wisdom with others going through the same journey.

Over60 spoke to Elelman to find out the secrets to her weight loss success.

Tell us about your weight loss journey – what made you decide to lose the weight? How did you do it?

I’ve had a weight problem all my life, but I knew I had to really get serious when I’d reached a size 22. I’ve since managed to shed in excess of 50 kilograms (yes, I’ve lost more than Posh Spice weighs) and am now half my size and back down to a size 12.

Having been constantly on or off a ‘diet’ for most of my adult life, my weight has fluctuated vastly as a result, but it wasn’t until I implemented some permanent lifestyle changes that I’ve been able to make a long-term difference to my size and shape and keep most of my weight off for more than 10 years.

The real question should probably be, how did I put all that weight on in the first place? I explain that complex issue in my new book Still Half My Size.

Being an emotional eater, one important lifestyle change has been to not use food for anything other than being hungry.

What made you decide to write a book about your journey?

I originally chronicled my 50 plus kilogram weigh loss in 2005 in my first best-selling book Half My Size and since then there’s been a vast array of new information and science come to light in weight management, especially in what we eat and how much fat and sugar in particular that we should be consuming. I felt it was important to share what I’ve discovered in my new book Still Half My Size, which is filled with lots of interviews with experts in their field.

One of the biggest adverse changes to my size and shape and emotions was going through Menopause and I interview Dr Gary Aaron from the Australian Menopause Centre in a Chapter I call “Managing the Menopause Madness”.

How do you navigate food-centric holidays like Christmas and Easter? How do you stay on the wagon?

Being a first-generation Australian growing up in a European family, food has always played a central part in all of our entertaining. The first thing Mum would think about when the doorbell rang was what do I have in the fridge to feed my visitors?

Celebrations were always focussed on food and I think it’s important not to be a martyr and deprive ourselves at these times.

Instead we should allow ourselves to have these as treats but the key is to know when to stop.

Portion control is always important but even more so when we indulge in the heavily fat and sugar laden foods that dominate our Christmas, Easter and birthday celebration menus.

Moderation has never been a word in the English language that I’ve been able to master very well so now when I over indulge I know I need to work off this energy with more exercise. One of the best exercises I can recommend is pushing ourselves away from the dinner table.

What tips do you have for others who have lost weight and want to keep it off?

Here are my top tips to losing weight and keeping it off:

1. Don’t weigh yourself – Muscle weighs the same as fat. Throw away your scales and only take your waist measurement instead. Women should be under 88cm and men under 102cm.

2. Read food labels – Keep an eye on the amount of hidden sugar, fat and salt in packaged foods and foods deemed as ‘healthy’ like yoghurt.

3. Exercise daily – start with a walk, take the stairs instead of the lift and Chapter 11 in my book is aptly called; Add SEX and double your results!

4. Mindful eating – Research shows we eat at least 30 per cent more when watching TV or when our mind is distracted.

5. Portion size – Eat off smaller plates, chew every mouthful and put your cutlery down in-between to help reduce your food intake and to give your stomach a chance to tell your brain that you’re full.

6. Baby steps – You’ll have a much better chance of long term success if you make smaller changes to your lifestyle habits over time.

7. Keep a logbook – Listing all the food you eat in a day and the quantity can be a real eye-opener and help you recognise what areas you’ll need to modify in order to get your weight under control. You don’t need to share this with anyone so be honest with yourself.

Still Half My Size (New Holland) by Susie Elelman is available now in bookstores and Booktopia.

Why Paul Burrell believes Prince Charles will never be King

He’s worked in the royal household for over a decade and following his exit from the jungle in I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! the royal butler Paul Burrell has sensationally claimed Prince Charles will never be King.

In an exclusive interview with Now To Love, Paul says he believes the monarchy is set for a major change when the Queen passes away.

Why Charles will never be King

"It's a very controversial prediction but we will never see King Charles and Queen Camilla sat on the throne of England. Watch that space," the 59-year-old told the publication from the South African jungle.

"Why? Because when The Queen dies and she'll be a hundred and something, she will never abdicate. When she dies, I think Charles will do the right thing and say, 'I'm far too old for this responsibility.',” Paul claims.

"And wouldn't the world and the Commonwealth much prefer a younger King and Queen – the beautiful Catherine and William? I think that is the way forward for the Royal Family."

Prince Harry - The People’s Prince

"Harry is becoming the People's Prince. He can do things which his brother can never do, because his brother is destined to be King with his wife Catherine beside him," Paul says.

"You shouldn't be surprised that in Harry's mind, everything revolves around his mother. His mother, who the Royal Family tried to erase. Those boys were taken back into the Royal Family and his mother's name was not allowed to be mentioned," he says.

Paul says he’s not surprised by the announcement that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will invite up to 2640 people, including members of the public from their charities, to their May wedding at Windsor Castle.

"Now they're gown up, they intend to honour their mother in different ways. I'm not surprised Meghan and Harry are inviting people from their charities to the wedding," the father-of-two notes.

"Harry, above William really, will finish his mother's work. So watch that space and watch those two, they'll be coming to Australia very soon [for the Invictus Games]."

Harry and Meghan’s family plans

"I believe that they will start a family as soon as possible! Harry also wants a large family and wants children as quickly as possible,” Paul predicts.

"Wouldn't it be wonderful to have mixed-race babies within the Royal Family? It's the way forward to bring this Royal Family into this century."

Prince William and Duchess Catherine’s third baby name predictions

Prince William and Duchess Catherine’s third baby will be a boy, Paul claims, adding they won't stop at three.

"Albert, because William's grandfather was Albert. Although he took the name George for the throne and always called Bertie in the Royal Family," Paul reveals of The Queen's late father, King George VI.

"I can see William and Kate with a little Berties. Or Arthur! Arthur or Albert – watch this space," Paul says.

Paul also believes the Duke and Duchess won’t stop at three.

"There will be one more! There'll be four, they want four and there'll be four babies for William and Kate. Just like The Queen, there was a gap between her [two kids] but William and Kate are running out of time, so they better get on with it!” he says, with a laugh.

Princess Diana would have loved Meghan Markle

According to Paul, Diana would have "embraced Meghan wholeheartedly."

"Meghan is everything that she would have chosen for Harry. 36 years old, a mature woman, knows her mind, knows the way forward. She's not a silly girl. She's a professional woman who will shape Harry," Paul says.

6 foods that prevent middle age spread, according to a dietician

Susie Burrell is one of Australia’s leading dieticians. She is founder of Shape Me, an online diet and lifestyle program which gives users direct access to her to support them with their weight loss goals.

None of us like it, but inevitably we gain weight as we get older. The combination of hormonal changes, a reduction in metabolic rate as we lose muscle mass over time and less active lifestyles mean that ‘middle aged’ spread equates to gradual weight gain each and every year. Finally we have some scientific evidence to show that the types of foods we choose on a day to day basis are crucial when it comes to preventing the ‘age creep’ many of us see in our older years.

The study published by Tuffs University in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition tracked the dietary patterns of over 120 000 US health professionals over 16 years. The study found that the diets that had the highest glycaemic load caused by a regular intake of foods that course rapid rises in blood glucose levels were associated with weight gain over time. On the other hand, protein rich staples including dairy, seafood, lean chicken and nuts were associated with weight loss over time. From a physiological perspective these findings make sense – protein rich foods are not only nutrient rich but they help to control blood glucose levels and keep us fuller for longer after eating them. Refined carbs and sugars as found in white breads and rice, soft drinks, juices and snack food result in relatively high release of the hormone insulin, which is related to weight gain and increased blood glucose levels.

From a practical perspective, the findings of this study are a good reminder of the need to work towards a balance of protein rich foods and a controlled amount of low glycaemic index carbohydrate in your daily diet rather than basing meals and snacks around carb rich foods such as rice, pasta, processed grains and processed snack foods made from white flour and sugars. For example Greek yoghurt with a couple of spoons of oats as opposed to a large bowl of cereal with a little milk; or a chicken salad with a slice of bread rather than a Turkish bread sandwich. Such changes reduce the glycaemic load of your diet which will only be of benefit for weight control and diabetes prevention long term. Specially, here are some of the other anti-aging superfoods shown in this study to keep your waistline thinner as the years tick by, as they do, seemingly so quickly!

1. Greek yoghurt

Greek yoghurt not only contains much less sugar than the average serve of store bought yoghurt but it is much higher in protein which helps to keep your blood glucose levels regulated throughout the day. An added benefit will come if you choose a variety of Greek yoghurt which also contains probiotics, the live bacteria that will help to feed the good bacteria in the gut and is thought to have a powerful role in optimal immune functioning long term. Enjoy with some oats for breakfast, as a filling snack, as a light dessert option, add to smoothies and protein shakes or even as a dressing option with vegetables for a daily calcium boost.

2. Cottage cheese

Cottage cheese is one of the most nutrient dense foods you can enjoy. With a hearty serve of more than 16g of protein per ½ cup along with calcium, magnesium and Vitamin B12, adding a serve of cottage cheese into your day is a great way to bump up your intake of essential nutrients for very few calories. When you consider that more than 4 million Australians have osteopenia, or a low bone density, eating calcium rich foods on a daily basis needs to be a priority throughout our adult lives.

3. Fish

Exceptionally high in protein, low in fat and calories, any type of fish is a superfood when it comes to weight control. Served grilled, BBQ’d or even fried in a little olive oil, fish is a perfect base to light meals served with plenty of brightly coloured, nutrient rich veges. Of particular nutritional value are deep sea cold fish such as sardines and salmon which contain some of the highest concentrations from omega 3 fats, a natural anti-inflammatory. Aim for at least 2-3 serves of a mix of different types of fish each week and remember that fresh is always best as it contains much less salt than smoked or tinned varieties.

4. Chicken breast

While good quality protein is required to protect muscle breakdown as we get older, the extra saturated fat found in fatty cuts of red meat or chicken legs and thighs is not. Chicken breast is exceptionally lean and is a rich source of protein, B-vitamins and magnesium. Enjoy with lunchtime salads, marinated with vegetables or made into mince to enjoy with zucchini pasta, burgers or in lettuce cups.

5. Nuts

A serve of nuts each day ensures that we are getting a good dose of poly and mono unsaturated fat each day as well as protein, fibre and Vitamin E. When it comes to which type, a mix of different nuts will ensure you get the range of micronutrients different nuts offer. A nut based snack mid-afternoon is a great dietary habit. Not only will this help to ward off the pre-dinner munchies as nuts are a great source of protein and fibre, but the low carbohydrate content of nuts will help to taper off your fuel intake towards the second half of the day which is conducive to weight control. Just remember that 30g or ~20 nuts is a serve.

6. Eggs

You will be hard pressed to find a more nutritionally complete food than the humble egg. Packed with protein, key nutrients including zinc as well as 20 other vitamins and minerals, eggs can easily be incorporated into any meal and prepared in minutes. Whether they are enjoyed for breakfast on wholegrain toast, added to sandwiches or salads at lunchtime or whipped into a quick frittata or omelette, eggs are the number one fridge food by far. And before you get too concerned about the cholesterol content of eggs, keep in mind that it is not cholesterol but saturated fat that increases blood cholesterol levels and 1-2 eggs each day will not have adverse effects on blood cholesterol when consumed as part of a nutritionally balanced diet.

Paul Burrell reveals Princess Diana was in a second car crash before fatal accident

Former royal butler Paul Burrell has confirmed a shocking revelation about the late Princess Diana after a psychic reading with celebrity medium John Edward on I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! Australia.

During the reading, John shared supposed secret details about Diana’s relationship with Paul including a car crash that Diana was involved in before the fatal road accident in 1997.

“You had a friend who passed in a vehicle accident,” John began.

Paul was intrigued after John asked him, “Were there two car accidents? I'm feeling like there were two car accidents – almost like one was foreshadowing and one was tragic.”

After muttering a quiet, “No”, Paul looked up and replied, “Yes! You couldn't possibly know that.”

In 1997, Diana was killed in a car crash in the Pont de l'Alma tunnel in Paris. Dodi Fayed and driver Henri Paul were also killed in the crash.

The reading continued as John brought up the rift between Paul and Diana’s family that was caused from accusations of theft in 2002.

“I feel like you have been ostracised,” John said. “I feel like you are the outcast, your need for validation from your friend's family... (it's) not coming. Like, not coming.”

Paul became even more spooked when John described the contents of Diana’s bedroom. After John mentioned a glass bird owned by Diana, Paul became emotional.

“The glass bird is the (René) Lalique glass bird,” a stunned Paul replied.

“That's what it is. It sat on a side table. He could not have known about a glass Lalique in the Princess's room... impossible.”

Then John mentioned a particular dress that Diana owned, a dress that Diana wears in a reoccurring dream Paul has.

“I do have a dream of me sitting alone with the Princess crossed-legged on the floor and she is wearing a blue dress,” Paul recalled.

“It's the last dress I saw her in. I have never told anybody about that particular dream.”

After the reading, a shaken Paul talked to campmate Jackie Gillies about the previously secret car accident.

“She was frightened that night,” Paul said.

“She crashed her car. She couldn't drive it. She was in the middle of nowhere. She said: ‘What do I do?’”

“I said, ‘You go and lock yourself in the ladies loo in the nearest hotel and I'll come and get you.’ And I did. I went down at midnight and collected her and then rang the police and the Palace to say they can go and tow the car.”

Paul Burrell makes explosive claims about Princess Diana

For years, he’s made a living off selling stories from behind the closed doors of Buckingham Palace, and former royal butler Paul Burrell’s time on I’m a Celebrity Australia has been no different.

The 59-year-old claimed that Prince Charles left Princess Diana in hospital right after Prince Harry’s birth to meet up with Camilla Parker Bowles.

Burrell alleged that, upon seeing Harry in his cot, Charles said, “now I have an heir and a spare,” then left a heartbroken and tearful Diana in hospital, saying, “my work is done, isn't it, now? I’m off to the theatre with Camilla.”

Diana reportedly told Burrell that, “on the night that Harry was born, I cried myself to sleep, knowing my marriage was over.”

The ex-royal staff member also claimed that Diana predicted her own death in a letter she allegedly wrote him explaining she believed Charles was planning an “accident”.

“These next few months, are the most difficult months of my life,” Diana wrote, according to Burrell. “I fear my husband is going to kill me. In an automobile accident. With head injuries. In order that he can remarry.”

“Her words,” Burrell said. “Her writing. Her stationary. I said to her, ‘You don't really think that, do you?’ Then she said, ‘I don’t know, these thoughts get in my head. I get the voices and feelings and I write then to you at night.’

“She leaves them on my desk so I can read her thoughts the next morning. That is spooky. She predicted her own death nine months before she died.”

Tell us in the comments below, do you think there’s any truth to Burrell’s stories? Or is he simply trying to cash in on Diana’s tragic death?

Paul Burrell reveals Princess Diana’s last words to him

Princess Diana’s former butler Paul Burrell emotionally revealed Diana’s last words to him on last night’s episode of I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here!.

Although he did not reveal the location of where he sat with Diana's body, he tearily explained to the Real Housewife’s Jackie Gillies that he had pleaded for the princess to open her eyes after her tragic death in 1997.

"When she died, I sat with her, I held her hand and I said to her 'wake up, wake up, you're not really dead are you? You're still alive and you're playing a trick on me'," Paul said.

"She didn't open her eyes and I said, 'Why did you leave me here? Why didn't you take me with you because my place is to look after you’

"I realised I had to take care of what she'd left behind here," Paul continued. "She couldn't do that and she left me to do that, so I had to take care of her world and the people in it."

Before she passed, Paul Burrell made one final promise to Princess Di. #ImACelebrityAU pic.twitter.com/weL0tTnCWe
— #ImACelebrityAU (@ImACelebrityAU) February 15, 2018

Paul then revealed Diana’s last words to him while she was on the phone to him in Paris.

"The last things she said to me, were on the phone," he said. "She was in Paris and the very last words were, 'Promise me you will always be there.'

"I said, 'I promise I will always be there'."

He also opened up about his fears that as time goes on that his memory of Diana “will fade”.

"I'm beginning to forget what her voice sounded like and forget what she smelt like," he said crying. "I don't want to forget that."

He broke down, admitting for the longest time he wished “she had taken him”.

But when he eventually met the “love of his life” he said he believes it was Diana who sent him to make him happy.

We all knew that going into the jungle for Australia's version of I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here!, Princess Diana’s former butler Paul Burrell wasn’t going to be a shrinking violet.

The outspoken 59-year-old already spoke about the rumours surrounding Prince Harry’s parentage, and now, he’s offered us yet another glimpse behind the closed doors of Buckingham Palace.

Addressing his campmates a couple of nights ago, Burrell opened up about one of Her Majesty’s more awkward moments.

While hosting the Sultan of Bahrain, the usually prim and proper Queen was at the centre of an embarrassing situation involving flatulence.

According to Burrell, she and Prince Philip were out for a carriage ride with the Sultan when something unexpected (and, if you ask us, pretty funny) happened.

“Suddenly a huge explosion of wind came from one of the horses in front,” he recalled.

Apparently, the wave of flatulence “went straight through the carriage,” bringing all conversation to a halt.

The Queen then turned to Prince Philip and asked if she should say something, to which he replied, “Yes, do.”

“She leaned forward and touched the Sultan’s knee and said, ‘I’m terribly sorry about that awful noise.’”

Unfortunately, the Sultan believed this to mean that Her Majesty was the source of the fart.

“The Sultan leaned forward, touched the Queen’s knee and said, ‘That’s quite alright Your Majesty, I thought it was one of the horses,’” Burrell said.

Awkward!

Paul Burrell enters the jungle on "I’m a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here!"

This season of I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! has already seen numerous controversies, but if its latest contestant’s past is anything to go by, it’s only going to get more dramatic.

Princess Diana’s outspoken former butler Paul Burrell entered the South African jungle as an intruder last night, along with UK reality star Vicky Pattison. And it’s not his first foray into the jungle. Both Burrell and Pattison appeared on the UK version of the show in 2004 and 2015, respectively.

However, while Pattison proved a fan favourite, going on to win her series, Burrell quickly earned a reputation as “one of the most annoying contestants” in the show’s history – a reputation he’s hoping he can fix, 14 years later.

Speaking to the Sydney Morning Herald ahead of joining the Aussie cast, the always-vocal Burrell says he’s looking forward to sharing more stories about his time with the royals – something social media users aren’t so sure about.

#ImACelebrityAU let’s start taking bets now, how long will it take Paul Burrell to drop Diana’s name when he gets to the camp and meets everyone?
— Steve Clark (@spclark14) February 12, 2018

Paul Burrell is doing the reality tv rounds now..hhmmmm..... #ImACelebrityAU
— Just Some Random (@spottedpelican) February 12, 2018

Paul Burrell on his 100th reality show since Princess Di died. 🙄 #ImACelebrityAU
— Carla JS 🚌 (@CarlsCarla) February 12, 2018

Paul Burrell... are you fricken kidding me?? I am going to be honest and frank, everything I say in the jungle will be the truth.”

But Burrell, who was nicknamed “the whimpering butler” thanks to his behaviour during a tucker trial back in 2004, says he’s a totally different man now.

“I have evolved since [2004], I am a different person," he said. “I’m a nearly 60-year-old man, I’m a newlywed, I came out, all in one year.

“The response I have had from people all around the world has been amazing. I am waiting for the negativity and I will answer it, but I have learned from two incredible and unique human beings, the Queen and Princess Diana.

“I know what the Queen would say to me and that is, 'There’s no room in this world for racism, homophobia, bullying or sexism.’”

Paul Burrell: “People are jealous of my relationship with Princess Diana”

Princess Diana’s controversial former butler Paul Burrell has never shied away from the media when it comes to discussing his relationship with the late princess. However, in the lead-up to the 20th anniversary of her tragic death, accusations are mounting that her friend and confidant is betraying her trust and memory.

Now, Burrell, author of A Royal Duty, has slammed his critics as being “jealous” of his close friendship with Diana.

“I’ve been accused sometimes of telling too many secrets [but] I only have one person to justify myself to,” he told 9Honey. “The trouble is there’s lots of jealousy. People are jealous of my relationship with her. I can’t help that. That’s not my problem, that’s theirs. It’s not mine.”

He recently defended himself against having broken her trust by revealing he had refused a UK tabloid’s request to know what the princess had been wearing in her coffin, saying it “crossed a line”.

“If it’s between me and her and it’s in a private capacity and behind closed doors and it’s nothing to do with anyone else, it’s between me and her.”

The one exception to his rule, however, is if he feels the information would “enhance her image” or if it was a message he thought Diana would want to be shared.

“People get confused because they think of her as a princess all the time, think of her as an ordinary woman. If it was your best friend, what would you do? Well I’m doing the same thing, it’s just that she’s Diana.”

Do you think the criticism of Burrell is justified? Karl Stefanovic blasts royal butler Paul Burrell

Karl Stefanovic has slammed Princess Di’s former butler Paul Burrell this morning in an interview on the Today Show, regarding his comments on the Duchess of Cambridge.

The television presenter took exception to comments Burrell had made in an earlier interview with Nine News, where he had said, “I met Mother Teresa — she had it, Pope John Paul II had it, the Queen has it, Diana certainly had it. Kate doesn’t.”

Princess Diana's butler Paul Burrell joined us live. #9Today pic.twitter.com/ggNGPaivaQ
— The Today Show (@TheTodayShow) August 8, 2017

Burrell had continued his argument, saying that while Kate is a, “lovely, lovely girl,” that “extra something, which you call the X factor,” is not there.

Stefanovic responded this morning, saying, ““We have a lot to talk about this morning, but first I want to ask you about your comments about Kate Middleton ... That’s way too harsh, isn’t it?” he asked.

“How DARE you even say that.”

“Well, because you see, standing beside someone like Diana I saw something so special and so magical that I can’t — I have never seen that,” Burrell responded.

“How often have you stood beside Kate?” Stefanovic said.

“No, I haven’t. I don’t know Kate. I just see her the way you see her, through a lens,” said Burrell.

Interestingly perhaps, social media seems to have responded in Burrell’s favour, with many people put off by Stefanovic’s confrontational interview style.

Did you see the interview? What are your thoughts?

Who Princess Diana dreamed of dancing with

One of the most iconic photos of Princess Diana was captured in 1985 at President Reagan’s White House Reception, when she hit the dancefloor with none other than John Travolta. And while she may have looked radiantly happy at the time, a new documentary claims she was secretly hoping to dance with a different man.

In the upcoming doco The Last 100 Days of Diana, her former butler Paul Burrell reveals she was dying to show off her moves with legendary ballet dancer, Mikhail Baryshnikov, who was also in attendance that night.

“Nancy and Ronny Reagan set up the press to take a picture of her dancing with John Travolta,” Burrell claims. “She said, ‘I didn't really want to dance with him though. I wanted to dance with Mikhail Baryshnikov. Because he is my hero.’”

Given that Diana loved ballet, and even took to the stage in 1985 to perform alongside Wayne Sleep at the Royal Opera House in 1985, Burrell’s revelation isn’t necessarily unbelievable, despite the disgraced butler being black-listed by the royal family after giving a number of explosive interviews in the wake of Diana’s death.

It’s also not the first time he’s made the allegation. In his 2006 book The Way We Were, Burrell said Diana confessed to him that “John Travolta was a gentleman and absolutely charming but he wasn't my chosen partner.”

“She wanted to dance with Baryshnikov,” he wrote.
