From cheeky thrill to grande dame – the Moulin Rouge celebrates 135 years of scandal and success

Will Visconti, University of Sydney

When the Moulin Rouge first opened on October 6 1889, it drew audiences from across classes and countries.

The Moulin offered an array of fin-de-siècle (end-of-the-century) entertainments to Paris locals and visitors. Located in Montmartre, its name, the “red windmill”, alluded to Montmartre’s history as a rural idyll. The neighbourhood was also associated with artistic bohemia, crime, and revolutionary spirit. This setting added a certain thrill for bourgeois audiences.

From irreverent newcomer to a French institution, the Moulin Rouge has survived scandal, an inferno and found new ways to connect with audiences.

Red and electric

In 1889, the Moulin Rouge was not the only red landmark to open in Paris. The Eiffel Tower, built as part of the Universal Exhibition and originally painted red, had opened earlier that same year. What set them apart, however, was their popularity.

The Moulin Rouge was an instant hit, capitalising on the global popularity of a dance called the cancan. Dancers like Moulin Rouge headliner La Goulue (“The Glutton”, real name Louise Weber) were seen as more appropriate emblems for the city than the Tower, which many considered an eyesore.

In an illustration from Le Courrier Français newspaper, a dancer modelled on a photograph of La Goulue holds her leg aloft, flashing her underwear with the caption “Greetings to the provinces and abroad!”.

Every aspect of the Moulin spoke to the zeitgeist, from its design to the performances, the use of electric lights that adorned its façade, and its advertising.

Its managers, the impresario team of Joseph Oller and Charles Harold Zidler, had a string of successful venues and businesses to their names. They recognised the importance of modern marketing, using print media, publicity photographs, and posters to spark public interest.

Among the most iconic images of the Moulin is Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec’s 1891 poster. At its centre is La Goulue, kicking her legs amid swirling petticoats.

She certainly can cancan

Found primarily in working-class dance halls from as early as the 1820s, the cancan became a staple of popular entertainment the world over.

Part of the dance’s thrill lay in the dancers’ freedom of movement and titillation of spectators, as well as its anti-establishment energy. Women used the cancan to thumb their nose at authority via steps like the coup de cul (“arse flash”) or coup du chapeau (removing men’s hats with a high kick).

The cancan was not the only attraction at the Moulin. There were themed spaces, sideshows, and variety performances ranging from belly dancers and conjoined twins to Le Pétomane (“The Fartomaniac”) who was a flatulist and the highest-paid performer. People watching was equally popular.

Scandals, riots, and royalty

Over the years, the Moulin has been no stranger to controversy.

In its early years, it cultivated an air of misbehaviour and featured in pleasure guides for visiting sex tourists.

In 1893 it hosted the Bal des Quat’z’Arts (Four-Arts Ball) held by students from local studios. Accusations of public indecency were made against the models and dancers in attendance, and violent protests followed after the women were arrested.

In 1907 the writer Colette appeared onstage at the Moulin in an Egyptian-inspired pantomime with her then-lover, Missy, the Marquise de Belbeuf. When the act culminated in a passionate kiss, a riot broke out.

Historical footage shows the Moulin Rouge as it was.

Kicking on and on

Over time, the Moulin Rouge shows changed their format to keep pace with public taste, though the cancan remained. The venue hosted revues and operettas, and various stars including Edith Piaf, Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra and Liza Minnelli.

Famous guests have included British royalty: from Edward VII (while Prince of Wales) to his great-granddaughter, Queen Elizabeth II, and her son, Prince Edward.

Since its opening, the Moulin’s fortunes have waxed and waned.

In 1915 the Moulin Rouge burned down but was rebuilt in 1921. Its famous windmill sails fell off overnight earlier this year but were swiftly repaired.

In the 1930s, it survived the Depression and rise of cinema (also capturing the attention of several filmakers). It also survived the Nazi occupation of Paris in the 1940s.

By the early 1960s, Jacki Clerico was managing the Moulin’s show after his father had revamped the venue as a dinner theatre destination. The younger Clérico oversaw additions like a giant aquarium where dancers swam with snakes, and its now-famous “nude line” – a chorus of topless dancers – in its shows.

In 1963, the Moulin Rouge struck upon a winning formula: revues, all named by Clérico with titles beginning with the letter “F” – from Frou Frou to Fantastique and Formidable. Since 1999, the revue Féerie (“Fairy”, also a French genre of stage extravaganza) has been performed almost without interruption.

Ticket sales were boosted thanks to Baz Luhrmann’s 2001 film Moulin Rouge! and more recently Moulin Rouge! The Musical.

Since COVID, the Moulin Rouge management have diversified. The windmill’s interior has been rented out via AirBnB and the Moulin’s dance troupe has performed on France’s televised New Year’s Eve celebrations. This year, the Moulin Rouge and its dancers were part of the Paris Olympics celebrations, dancing in heavy rain.

Though people have come to appreciate the Eiffel Tower too, the Moulin Rouge can still argue its status as the pinnacle of live entertainment in the French capital: immediately recognisable, internationally visible, and quintessentially Parisian.<!-- End of code. Emirates takes cheeky swipe at other airlines in new safety video

Emirates have taken a cheeky swipe at Qantas, Air New Zealand and British Airways with their new “no nonsense” in-flight safety video.

The Dubai-based airline took a different approach to other major airlines, saying they chose not to include dancers and singers for its in-flight entertainment because they “take your safety seriously”.

“Hello and welcome on board your Emirates flight today,” a flight attendant says at the start of the four minute video.

“This is your no-nonsense safety video. We do not have dancers breaking into song, characters from movies, or celebrities trying to be funny I’m afraid.”

Another cabin crew member then chips in, “But at Emirates, safety always comes first. So it’s important that we take you through some safety features before takeoff. And then you can all get back to our award-winning entertainment system.”

The decision to stick to the basics for such an important video has been praised online, with many comparing the video to others by competing airlines.

“Excellent video. No fuss, no faff, just informative and not distracting. These videos are about safety first and foremost, not entertainment,” wrote one fan.

“Emirates got it right. This is THE safety video, simple and comprehensive which it should be,” agreed another.

“This video is sending a message to other airlines,” stated a third.

Emirates has gone in the opposite direction to its Aussie partner Qantas, as a safety video from the Flying Kangaroo went viral earlier this year for all the wrong reasons.

The video was widely panned for being “elitist” and “sexist”, while skimming over vital safety information, as one person on social media wrote, “I’d prefer just focus on, oh I dunno, in flight safety during the in-flight safety video? “Why do we need a long video with all this added stuff?”

The video, which replaced an earlier retro video released in 2020 that marked the airline’s 100th birthday, features frequent flyers and Qantas staff delivering the pre-flight safety announcement from their favourite “magic places” around the world.

On Monday, Robert was announced as one of the front runners for a Gold Logie, for his co-host role on I’m A Celebrity … Get Me Out Of Here! making him the youngest male ever to be nominated for the prestigious award.

Even though he may be the future golden boy of television, for Bindi, he will always be her younger brother who she is not afraid to tease.

Bindi took to Instagram to share a cheeky throwback post of her clutching her own Silver Logie in 2008, for Most Popular New Female Talent for her work in Bindi the Jungle Girl.

“Hey Australia, vote for my awesome brother so he can catch up to me 16 years later …” she captioned the post.

"At least mine's gold," Robert teased, to which Bindi replied "You haven't won it yet..." alongside a laughing emoji.

“Well actually, I did get nominated for 2 Logies. Hahahaha soooo…”, Robert quipped.

“Sorry, I can’t hear you over my Emmy award …” Bindi replied, referring to her win for Outstanding Performer in a Children's Series when she was just nine-years-old.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Bindi Irwin (@bindisueirwin)

After the entertaining sibling rivalry, Robert shared a screenshot of their banter to his Instagram stories, and used it as an opportunity to remind fans to vote for him.

“Ok uh … really gonna need that Logies vote now guys, it just got real,” he wrote.

Robert was also nominated for the Bert Newton Award for Most Popular Presenter, with the winners of this year's Logies being announced on August 18.

Images: Instagram

Today hosts left shocked by cheeky schoolboy’s outrageous joke

Hosts of the Today show have been left stunned after a schoolboy shared a controversial yet hilarious joke.

Karl Stefanovic and Sarah Abo were joined by a young schoolboy via video link, who began sharing the joke with the hosts.

According to the Daily Mail, producers said the hilarious moment was unplanned, and said they had no idea what the boy was going to say ahead of time.

The boy began asking, “A vegan and a vegetarian are jumping off a cliff to see who will hit the bottom first. Who wins?”

“I don't know,” Stefanovic said. “Who wins?” asked Abo.

The boy didn't miss a beat as he replied, “Society!”

The hosts doubled over in laughter as they couldn’t hide their shock at the grim punchline, while Karl was so tickled by the joke that he fell off the couch.

“We weren't expecting that!” Abo said, laughing nervously.

The candid moment has since gone viral on TikTok, racking up tens of thousands of views from both around Australia and around the world.

The clip made waves in the US, as TikTok users remarked that such a moment could never happen on strait-laced American TV.

Introducing the video in a viral TikTok, American commentator Benny Johnson called it 'the single greatest moment in television history'.

One US viewer commented, “That kid's got more wit and humour than a lot of comedians today.

Another added, “I'm not even this kid's dad, and he still made me proud!”, while a third person remarked, “That kid just won the internet.”

Many vegans and vegetarians were even forced to admit that, despite being the butt of the joke, the young man's comic timing was exemplary.

“As a vegetarian, I laughed my arse off,” one wrote.

"I can't answer that!": Karl's cheeky question stumps JFK's daughter

Today show host Karl Stefanovic left the US ambassador to Australia Caroline Kennedy - John F Kennedy's daughter - in fits of laughter after he posed a cheeky personal question on Wednesday morning.

Stefanovic didn't miss the opportunity to play cupid for his daughter by asking the US Ambassador about the relationship status of her youngest son, Jack Schlossberg.

“I hope that you don’t take any offence (to) what I am going to ask. My daughter wanted to know if your son is single?” he said.

This elicited a laugh from the ambassador, who smoothly deflected the question by saying: “You would have to ask him. I can’t answer that.”

Stefanovic laughed and said: “Good deflection.”

The ambassador played along and said: “Your daughter must be so mad at you right now. I would be so mad if I was your daughter.”

The Today show host has two daughters, Ava, 18 and Harper, 3, and continued the joke by saying he was asking on behalf of Harper.

“Then there is something really wrong with you,” the ambassador quipped.

Stefanovic's co-host Sarah Abo joined in on the teasing and said: “Welcome to what the rest of the nation already knows.”

Schlossberg, 30, is the only grandson of former US president John F. Kennedy, and has a considerable social media following with over 100,000 followers on Instagram.

Besides his dashing looks, the 30-year-old also graduated with a law degree from the prestigious Harvard Law School.

Images: Today Show/ News.com.au/ Getty/ Instagram

Sonia Kruger’s cheeky shot during Logies victory speech

The 2023 Logie Awards ceremony was filled with memorable moments, both triumphant and awkward. Sam Pang took on the role of the host, becoming the first in 11 years to do so. He kicked off the proceedings with a pointed and humorous monologue, highlighting the win for diversity as the first-ever host representing both Channel 7 and Channel 10.

“I would like to acknowledge a win for diversity tonight. I am the first host in the history of the Logies to be half and half - half Channel 7 and half Channel 10,” Pang began.

“Let’s be honest, it’s just be great to have an Asian on Channel 7 who isn’t trying to smuggle live birds through border security,” he continued, telling viewers to strap in for the “two-day” ceremony.

One of the night's obvious highlights was the announcement of the Gold Logie winner, Sonia Kruger. Overwhelmed with joy, Sonia expressed her gratitude and thanked everyone involved in her shows, including Big Brother, Dancing With the Stars, and The Voice.

She also playfully teased last year's Gold Logie winner, Hamish Blake, for sharing the same agent and their agent's hopes for concentrating on her in the future.

Kruger quoted a conversation with the agent who had allegedly told her “I think people are a little over Hamish [Blake].”

She added that the man had told her “Frankly I am hoping that he will leave the agency, so I can concentrate all of my efforts on you, Sonia”.

Karl Stefanovic, on the other hand, faced a challenging moment during his appearance. Trying to add some impromptu humour to introduce a tribute to Barry Humphries, his joke about David Koch's favourite show, Bump, fell flat with the audience.

“I did want to just check something... I am pretty sure before I heard Kochie say he loves Bump’s.... season 3. Did anyone mishear that? Because I am pretty sure I did. Anyway, those are the headlines tomorrow morning...” Karl said.

The cameras caught Kochie looking bewildered to say the least.

Sam Pang then by saying “I don’t want to say Karl’s joke about Kochie sank, but OceanGate are offering expeditions to visit it.”

Following the In Memoriam segment, Sam Pang dedicated another In Memoriam to TV shows that had low ratings in the past year. This included Seven's Blow-Up, lacking the entertainment, artistry, and family fun it aimed for, and Ten's The Real Love Boat, which seemingly did not receive favourable reviews.

Throughout the night, Sam Pang entertained the audience with a series of witty remarks. He thanked those who declined the hosting gig, including Hamish Blake: “I appreciate it, mate, some of us have a mortgage,” said Pang. “By the way, a mortgage is when the bank loans... Or as Pang put it: “Sitting next to your co-host - who do you have this year, Karl?” He said Karl’s table would only be more fun if “Michael Clarke was on it.”

While Pang's monologue ended on a controversial note with a joke about being an Asian on I'm A Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here!, the overall ceremony was filled with moments that kept the audience entertained.

He also advised audience members “not to mix beer and wine, and make sure that you don’t mix your acceptance speech with an active court case.”

Images: Channel Seven

Subway puts its best footlong forward with a cheeky new ad

It’s no secret that sandwich giant Subway has copped its fair share of criticism over the size and value of its famous subs.

And while it has addressed issues with its faux-footlongs in the past, the company has opted for a bolder approach with its latest marketing strategy.

In a series of billboards being rolled out across Australia, Subway has taken a stand against its naysayers and competitors, releasing an image of its iconic footlongs alongside three familiar burgers with the caption “Yep, our footlongs are really that big.”

The burgers haven’t been formally identified, but anyone who’s so much as stepped into a Maccas would have no trouble recognising the chain’s signature burger, the Big Mac. Additionally, the campaign seems to have included the most popular burgers from the likes of KFC and Hungry Jacks as well.

As to why Subway have taken this new approach, Australia and New Zealand’s head of marketing, Rodica Titeica, referenced the cost of living crisis striking people across both regions, noting that “with cost-of-living pressures increasing, we know just how important ‘value for money’ is to Aussies.

“That’s why the iconic Subway footlong continues to represent indisputable value that is not only convenient but also a guilt-free, better-for-you food option.”

Typically, Subway’s ‘meatball melt’ sandwich comes in at just under $15. Meanwhile, a single Big Mac sits at around the $7.50 price mark.

This isn’t the first daring campaign that the company has tried, having recently joined forces with Smith’s chips for three new flavours inspired by Subway’s sandwiches.

Fan favourites won out, seeing the likes of ‘Crinkle Chicken Teriyaki Sub’, ‘Crinkle Meatball Sub’, and ‘Crinkle Pizza Sub’ hit supermarket shelves across Australia.

And in 2022, Subway dipped into the bustling billboard realm with an interactive 3D sign in London, England. This one left its competitors alone, instead allowing audiences to create their very own sandwich on the screen.

Scattered throughout the crowd at the 2022 display were Subway ambassadors, who were hard at work delivering people their deliciously unique creations.

“Embracing new technologies and pioneering ways to interact with audiences is always exciting,” said Dom Goldman, Chief Creative Officer of the company who created the campaign, Above+Beyond. “We’ve seen many great 3D billboards, but creating a fully interactive screen with fulfilment baked in is a first.”

“This is a first in marketing, trying to find new ways to reach Subway fans and give them a chance to enjoy their Sub just the way they want,” Head of Marketing for Subway UK & Ireland Angie Gosal explained, “Subway always puts customers first and this campaign is another example of this.”

Images: Shutterstock

Wrapping presents leads to mother's cheeky Christmas discovery

Queensland mother of four Nicole, was wrapping her Christmas presents early this year, when she had to take a second glance at a few images on what she thought was fairly innocent and cute wrapping paper.

What she didn’t realise, was that after wrapping a few presents she accidentally selected something a little too inappropriate.

The paper, innocently named "Christmas Wrapping Paper Roll" online actually contained X-rated cartoon images. One of an aroused snowman and another of a randy reindeer mounting another.

I purchased them online and only noticed when I was wrapping my third present - thankfully the first two were for me and my partner!" she laughed.

"When I first saw it I had to send photos to my friend and mother to see if they noticed anything off while wiping laughing tears from my face."

Nicole said she wasn't planning on ditching the paper from Typo completely, but with her younger children, she wasn't keen on her kids asking about the birds and the bees over Christmas lunch.

"I have only wrapped small presents in it now with strategically placed name labels," she said of her work-around.

"I find it hilarious and have showed everyone. I put the post up on social media in case someone hadn’t noticed or may have left it too late to buy more paper ... and to give people a laugh!"

Feeling the need to share, Nicole posted snaps of the paper in the Christmas Mums Australia Facebook group, and wasn't the only one to find it funny. Over 340 members of the group commented on Nicole's post.

“This is the best!” one person commented.

“That’s gold! I love it,” added another.

As the laughter and jokes kept coming, many shoppers said that others shouldn’t be so surprised by the images, given Type, the store Nicole purchased from is known for selling cheeky items like this.

Images: Typo

Kyle's cheeky swipe at Ben Fordham after ratings victory

Kyle Sandilands has shared the cheeky text he sent to Ben Fordham after the Kyle and Jackie O Show dominated in the radio ratings.

The KIIS co-hosts knocked the dominant 2GB host off the number one spot in Tuesday’s GfK ratings, increasing their total audience share to 14.9 per cent, up 2.1 percentage points.

Meanwhile Fordham, who took over as host from Alan Jones in 2020, fell just behind with 14.8 per cent total audience share, down 2.1 per cent.

As 2GB have held the title of ‘Sydney’s top-rating breakfast show’ for more than 15 years, Kyle and Jackie O's ratings victory is an impressive feat for the veteran broadcasting duo.

Speaking to news.com.au, the 51-year-old shock jock said he couldn’t help but rub salt in Fordham’s wound after hearing the news.

“I sent him a text saying ‘Sorry Ben … x’, and he wrote back, ‘How did you go?’, because obviously I know everything in radio, he’s only new,” Sandilands joked.

He added, “So I said, ‘We beat you by a little bit. By an ants d**k. And he wrote nothing back. I told him in the middle of his show. [But] I did it very nicely, I didn’t gloat and carry on. Just placed it in front of him.”

The broadcasting duo have had a successful few weeks, after being inducted into the Hall of Fame at the Australian Commercial Radio Awards last month.

Sam Mac’s cheeky dig at Robert Irwin

Sam Mac has taken a cheeky dig at Robert Irwin during his Taronga Zoo segment.

The Sunrise weatherman was showing off a baby echidna that was new to the Taronga Zoo.

“Smudge is a baby echidna, only 43 days old,” Sam said as he showed off the baby echidna.

“You can actually see the spikes starting to form there as well.

“And apparently, he loves it if you give him a little belly rub.”

Sam then gently rubbed Smudge’s belly as he squirmed in delight.

“Take that Robert Irwin,” he laughed.

Sunrise weatherman @MrSamMac is taking on @RobertIrwin while handling some cute and cuddly animals at @tarongazoo #Sunriseon7 pic.twitter.com/smJ2SaOm3x

— Sunrise (@sunriseon7) October 24, 2022

It comes just months after Robert took his own dig at Sam when he covered for him as a weatherman in July.

"You're going to fill in next week as a guest weatherman!" host Natalie Barr told Robert. "Tell us about that!”

"I am," Robert replied with a laugh. "All I can say is: Sam Mac, I am coming for ya! I'm excited, it's gonna be good fun guys!”

On the other side however, Robert’s sister Bindi has come under fire for her "pathetic, useless" response to a "tragedy" at a wildlife farm in the US.

Bindi was contacted on Twitter by Taylor Blake in Florida, asking for help to cure her emu Emmanuel, who has avian influenza.

According to Taylor, avian flu has killed 99 percent of the other birds who live at Knuckle Bump Farms, in what she described as a "massive tragedy".

Running out of options to save her celebrity emu, Taylor reached out to the Aussie wildlife warriors online.

Bindi Irwin responded saying that, although Australia Zoo had treated more than 100,000 animals, it had “never treated an emu with this particular disease”.

“We will need to rely on our fellow animal experts with more experience with this avian flu,” she began, in a tweet in response to Blake’s call for help.

She signed off the response with, “Sending love and light your way from our entire family”.

Bindi's response was quickly condemned online, with many suggesting the Irwins might have been able to do something to assist.

Images: Instagram

Schoolgirl's cheeky question for King Charles

King Charles and Camilla, Queen Consort, have attended their first joint royal engagement in their new roles.

The royals were visiting the youth organisation Project Zero in Walthamstow, where among the crowd they were greeted by a group of excited school children from Barn Croft Primary School.

The outing took a funny turn straight off the bat when the monarch was asked a cheeky question by a young schoolgirl.

Immediately seeing the humour in the spontaneous moment with the gathered school children, the 73-year-old monarch seemed happy to engage in the back-and-forth banter, much to the amusement of the crowd.

"How old are you, King Charles?" the little one asked innocently.

His Majesty replied with a laugh, saying: "You can have a guess. Have a guess."

One little kid shouted out "96", which the King took in good humour with another giggle.

Following up on an invite extended at the Platinum Jubilee Big Lunch in June, the royal couple were visiting with Project Zero. The then-Duchess of Cornwall had met Project Zero founder Stephen Barnabis and youth champion Rico Thai-Richards at their event in June and their chat featured in Camilla's Country Life documentary, which aired in July.

On Tuesday, the royal couple greeted the pair before being introduced to members of staff who deliver various programs, including digital talent, coding, music production, mental health and support services for women and girls.

Natalie Barr's cheeky swipe at Chris Hemsworth

He may be one of Australia's most famous faces but Nat Barr couldn't help make a cheeky jab at Chris Hemsworth after he received a nod from the Queen.

The Thor star was recognised in the Queen's Birthday 2021 Honours List on Monday morning, along with Sunrise sports presenter Mark Beretta.

Nat and her co-host Michael Usher, who was filling in for David 'Kochie' Koch, delivered an on-air tribute to Mark who was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia for his incredible charity work.

Beretts, as he's fondly known within the Sunrise family, has raised millions for cancer research through his annual cycling event, Tour de Cure, over the past 12 years.

And, as Michael reminded him, he's in good company alongside homegrown Hollywood star Chris who was made a Member of the Order of Australia.

But as the Aussie icon's name was mentioned, Nat decided to pull the comedy card and pretend to not know who he was.

"Who?" she quipped as the two men laughed.

Michael also jumped in to compare Mark with the muscled Marvel superhero, who was recognised for 'significant service to the performing arts, and to charitable organisations'.

"Well, he's Thor and you're normally sore," he chuckled.

Mark has achieved a staggering amount with Tour de Cure which he co-founded over a decade ago.

The organisation has raised over $70 million, funded 550 cancer research projects and contributed to 47 international cancer breakthroughs.

And despite going through a tough year due to the pandemic which say donations "dry up", Mark was proud to announce that the charity as on track to raise around $11 million this year.
