University gives resident cat an honorary doctorate

A university in the US has handed out an honorary doctorate to a surprising recipient: the resident campus cat.

For four years, Max the cat has been a respected member of the Vermont State University, putting a smile on students' faces through his friendly demeanour.

When Max's owner Ashley was contacted by the school and told their plans to give Max the special honour, she "thought they were crazy", but it brought a big smile to her face.

"We live on the main entrance to campus and when my daughter started attending as a junior, she started seeing everyone and how they kind of doted on Max," Ashley told Today Extra.

"So we started an Instagram page that we keep updated with some of the photos and then I started getting tracked down by people on campus saying, 'Oh Max has been on the Dean's desk and he's been on the desk of the head of graduate studies, and he just kind of makes himself at home.'"

Ashely said that Max's calming presence has helped many students who are stressed about their studies, or those who are feeling homesick.

"They were just talking about how he was so helpful during finals week because everybody was picking him up and doing selfies with him and he was making everyone calmer," she said.

"There's a real sense of community because I heard he was getting attacked by feral cats if he was on campus after 5pm, so I put up some posters and asked the students to give me a call or shoot me a text if they see him out after dark and they started arriving on our doorstep with him saying 'Hey, we brought Max home.'"

Max was bestowed the honorary degree of "doctor of litter-ature", although will not be attending the next graduation ceremony.

Image credits: Today Extra / Vermont State University

Rebel Wilson comes forward about sexual harassment

Rebel Wilson has claimed a former male co-star sexually harassed her and then attempted to “destroy” her career.

She claims the unnamed man “called me into a room and pulled down his pants” and then, in front of his friends, asked her to perform a lewd act.

“It was awful and disgusting,” the 42-year-old she said, opting not to reveal his name or even what film it was.

“And all the behaviour afterwards — this was all before #MeToo — where they kind of tried to destroy me and my career. If it had happened after #MeToo, then I could have just blasted them.”

The actress, who has a law degree from the University of New South Wales, did what she could to document the incident for legal purposes and immediately called her representatives.

“I got certain things in writing about what happened,” she said. “Definitely among industry circles, I made sure people knew what happened.”

Rebel she should have left the movie when it happened, admitting that staying “wasn’t worth it.”

“But at the same time, I was like, ‘Oh well, do the right thing, be a professional and finish the movie.’ Now I would never do that,” she explained.

“I thought even complaining to my agency was a big step. And to complain to the studio. I found out I was like the fourth person to complain about the guy. Such gross behaviour, but a lot of women have had it way worse.”

Wilson also said she would stand up for herself “even more” if something similar happened today.

Image: Getty

Woman claims she was left with third degree burns from Woolworths product

A Queensland woman claims that has been left with horrifying third degree burns after a Woolworth’s popular buy exploded in the oven.

Angela, who is a huge fan of the Bag n Bake because of its convenience, placed her dinner in the oven and went about her business.

When it was time to take it out, she opened the oven and the bag exploded all over her arm.

“It’s an oven-proof bag, it’s meant to go in the oven. But on this occasion, the bag just exploded open and the sauce that was in it came out,” she told 7News.

“The sugar in the marinade made it even hotter. It was so, so painful.”

Angela immediately ran her arm under cold water and put burn cream on it before serving dinner.

In shock at the nasty burn, Angela eventually went to the doctor who was unsure of how bad the burn was.

“He put all this cream on it, non-stick gauze on it and then triple wrapped it so it would stay moist the whole time.

A few days later, Angela went to her family doctor who told her to come back every two days to get it cleaned and redressed.

Sharing photos to the Woolworths Facebook page, the supermarket requested Angela get in touch with them to help resolve the issue.

However, Angela claims the worker who gave her the Bag n Bake did not seal it properly and there may have been a bad batch of bags.

She said she was happy with the way Woolworths handled the incident, who she said will remain in touch to ensure she is okay.

Angela is still feeling a bit miserable about the scar being in a noticeable place and that it won’t disappear.

Warning: Photos can be viewed here at reader’s discretion.

Image: Shutterstock

"Sorry, what was your medical degree?": Allison Langdon shoots down Bunnings 'Karen'

Today show hosts Karl Stefanovic and Allison Langdon were forced to cut an interview short with a woman known as 'Bunnings Karen' after she defended her right not to wear a mask in Victoria.

Elizabeth 'Lizzy' Rose appeared on the program Tuesday morning to discuss her coronavirus views, but the hosts were uninterested in them.

As Rose argued that people had a right to make their own choices regarding their health, Langdon quickly cut her off.

'Sorry, what was your medical degree?' Langdon asked.

Rose then claimed to have had experience as a medic but hasn't worked in the field for about four years.

"I am not a doctor," she clarified on air.

"'I am not a scientist but I worked as a medic. Obviously, quite a while ago, not when COVID was around."

"My health comes first." Anti-masker Lizzy believes COVID-19 is bio-chemically engineered and refuses to wear face masks. What are your thoughts on this? #9Today pic.twitter.com/Dgl4zuOjYh
— The Today Show (@TheTodayShow) July 27, 2020

Rose explained that she had no issues wearing the mask previously when attending an eyelash appointment, but had issues when Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews made them mandatory.

"Did you Lizzie know the elderly and aged care homes... now 700 of them affected with COVID, do they have a choice? The answer is no," Stefanovic said.

"You deliberately went into that place to antagonise workers who are literally just trying to do their bit for the country right now, to protect other people from this killer virus, which it is.

"I can't listen to you anymore," he said as he instructed producers to cut the segment short.

"It's wrong, I'm sorry. I thought that we would in some way shape or form get to a reasonable excuse as to why she was doing that. Otherwise we wouldn't have got her on."

Langdon then explained that there was a discussion as to whether or not to give Lizzie air time.

"We had this discussion last night whether we would give her air time. It is important. Bunnings staff members doing the right thing faced with this kind of activity and we felt it was important to hear from her point of view. I back you 100% calling quits on that," Langdon explained.

"Apologies if you are offended," Stefanovic added.

After the Bunnings video went viral around Australia, an adjunct professor of law and criminal justice at the University of South Australia came forward to explain whether or not the masks are infringing on human rights as claimed in the video.

"The executive government under the constitution has every right to make executive decisions," Rick Sarre, adjunct professor, said to the ABC.

"You can't make a decision on the basis of parliamentary debate very, very quickly.

"We'd be in a complete and utter shambles [if that was the case], because how do you then get a Parliament to come back and do something that when the Parliament's in recess, for example?

"So once the government says we have a pandemic and … we're now going to mandate the wearing of masks in our state — of course they can do that.

"That's always premised upon the fact that we are in a state of emergency or we're in a situation that requires good decisive government action.

"So anyone who suggests that has to be parliamentarily debated is speaking nonsense."

He also explained that discrimination on the basis of your clothing doesn't exist.

"In every state and territory we have an equal opportunity or anti-discrimination act," he said.

"You cannot discriminate against the person on the basis of their race, on the basis of their age, on the basis of their gender, on the basis of their sexuality.

"Wearing a mask is not one of those. There's nothing that says you cannot discriminate against me on the basis of my dress."

He said some specific exemptions in some jurisdictions applied for religious attire such as turbans or hijabs, but a face mask is neither of those.

"Wickedly negligent": Five-month-old left in car on 38-degree day while parents shop for TV

Parents who left their five-month-old baby in a locked car on a 38C day as they shopped for a television have been fined only $300 each.

The couple from Mt Druitt in Sydney’s west, who can’t be named for legal reasons, parked at The Good Guys in the Prospect Homemaker Centre, on January 26.

Passers-by noticed the child crying in the car alone, which prompted them to alert staff who tried to page the parents multiple times.

After receiving zero response, the staff rescued the child themselves before calling the police.

The Blacktown Local Court heard the mother returned to the car after the call to police was made.

A short while later, the child’s father was found still inside the store trying to finalise the purchase of a television.

Police revealed that the pair showed “no remorse” for their actions.

“They appeared more concerned with finalising the purchase of their electronic equipment,” said police.

Magistrate Jennifer Giles slammed the couple for leaving the baby in the car on a scorching hot day.

“You cannot leave a baby in a hot car in Australia, the kid will be dead in 20 minutes,” said Ms Giles.

“It is wickedly negligent for you to have done so.

“It is a prevalent offence and the court needs to make sure you are denounced and deterred.”

With the help of an interpreter, the father apologised before explaining that they had left the child in the car because it was sleeping, and they had turned the air conditioning on.

Both parents were charged with one count of leaving a child in a motor vehicle and causing distress but were fined just $300 each.

"The most terrified I’ve ever been in my life": Passengers hurt as cruise ship tilts 45 degrees

The Norwegian Cruise Liner which tilted on a “45-degree angle,” on Sunday night, according to one cruiser, is blaming the incident on a strong, sudden gust of wind.

The Norwegian Escape began slanting over at roughly midnight, shocking passengers who were enjoying their trip in the piano bar.

“Just before midnight on Sunday, March 3, Norwegian Escape encountered unexpected weather in the form of a sudden, extreme gust of wind, estimated at 100 knots, which resulted in the ship heeling to the port side,” the cruise line wrote in a Twitter post.

“Several injuries were reported, and those guests and crew received immediate attention or are being treated by the ship’s medical staff,” the statement continued.

The ship, which is capable of carrying over 6,000 people, says it was pushed suddenly by a gust of wind about 185km – a burst similar to that of a wind from a Category 3 hurricane.

The cruise line said the ship sustained no damage during the incident.

Not only passengers of the vessel were injured, crew members were also wounded, but the exact amount has not been disclosed.

American publication WESH reports around a dozen ambulances were at a Port Canaveral, Florida port on Tuesday morning when the ship arrived back to shore.

Aaron Black, one of the cruisers onboard, told CNN he was at the piano bar on Sunday night when the ship started to slope. You can now experience a 360 degree view of Uluru online

With ever-growing troves of valuable data on its shelves, Google has expanded its Street View range further to Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park in Northern Territory, Australia.

However, rather than eyeing ad revenue, Google seems intent on documenting the cultural heritage of the area in this project, and after two years of collaborative development the Story Sphere of Uluru is now live online.

Since 2007, Street View has captured some of the world's most famous sites across 83 countries, including the Grand Canyon in the US and the Taj Mahal in India.

The service offers 360 degree panoramas from various vantage points around each site, in what are like dynamic brochures for curious parties and potential visitors, who are probably many kilometres away.

The new Uluru coverage includes nine sites, under labels including Uluru View, Kata Tjuta View, Tjukurpa and Watering Hole in line with existing Street View scenarios.

However, when tackling Uluru, the Google team thought the unique Australian site needed the presence and voices of its people to fully capture the Tjukurpa, or way of life of the local Anangu people.

Working closely with Parks Australia, the local community and Tourism NT, the company engaged its existing Story Sphere platform to bring the Street View to life for the special site.

After clicking through to the Story Spheres from Street View, the scenes become animated with voice-overs and music, adding rich currents of songlines and stories.

Click on the white notes that hover over certain areas of the scene to be taken on a guided tour by Anangu traditional owner Sammy Wilson about its history or cultural relevance, with songs and music by traditional owner and Anangu Elder, Reggie Uluru.

It respectfully avoids climbing the rock, in line with wishes of traditional owners, and rather traces paths around its base away from sacred sites deemed inappropriate for the project.

"If people see this, they will hopefully have more of an understanding about Uluru. They will also want to come and visit," Wilson says.

"Everybody in the world has their own culture, their own ways of expressing and celebrating their belief systems and culture. The natural world holds our belief system".

"Guests can arrive informed of more than just the picture postcard views and with an appreciation and a desire to learn more when on the ground," says Jason Pellegrino, managing direction of Google Australia and New Zealand.

"For locals, it's an opportunity to share their heritage amongst themselves in a new way. Younger generations have taken up new technology. Traditions are now transferred in multiple ways, in addition to the oral telling of stories.

"This platform is not monetised whatsoever. There's no money being made".

Have you ever been to Uluru?

Written by Richard McLeish.
