“How is this funny?”: Tourist slammed over “disrespectful” act at Graceland

An arrogant traveller has been slammed online after blatantly disregarding signage at Graceland, and taking a dip in the pool.

A woman posted a video from the late Elvis Presley’s iconic property in Memphis, Tennessee, as she travelled to the area with her husband.

Capturing the moment and sharing it online as a joke, a video posted to the woman’s TikTok account shows her husband, dressed in shorts, shoes and socks climbing over a pool fence, marked 'RESTRICTED AREA'.

The man is then seen walking towards the diving board as a security guard rushes towards him.

After wobbling a bit on the diving board, he jumps into the water before the guard can stop him.

The woman captured the video, "My husband jumped into Elvis pool", adding a laughing emoji.

Despite the couple’s jovial nature over the stunt, many people were quick to condemn the tourists and their video, which has been viewed over 14 million times.

"How is this funny? People are so disrespectful and I hope he got arrested," one person commented.

"As someone who has solid respect for Elvis Presley this is very disrespectful to him and his family," another agreed.

"Travellers doing whatever they want as usual. Shame," another person commented.

Despite the overwhelming condemnation, there were some who defended the man’s actions, with one person writing, "I think Elvis would have done the same thing lol."

The woman also responded to the accusations that her husband's actions were disrespectful in another video, saying, "Elvis caught someone jumping into his pool once and he never stopped them. He never got them arrested. Told them to stay in the pool. That's what a pool is meant for is to jump into."

One person quickly responded, "Whether people think 'Elvis would be laughing' or not it's all down to respect. There's a reason as to why certain areas are roped off."

"Willfully clueless": Tourists slammed for disrespectful Auschwitz selfies

In a move that has been slammed as disgusting and disrespectful, a tourist has used her time visiting Auschwitz as an opportunity to pad out her social media feeds.

In a picture shared by GB News producer Maria Murphy, a man and a woman can be seen on the railway tracks outside of the main Auschwitz structure. He is crouched with a camera angled towards her, while she is posing on the tracks, hand in her hair with her face turned to the sky.

“Today I had one of the most harrowing experiences of my life,” Maria wrote on Twitter alongside the image. “Regrettably it didn’t seem [like] everyone there found it quite so poignant.”

She went on to explain that the tour had been going for a couple of hours by that point, so the tourists had no excuse for their ignorance and disrespect - especially as they were all “asked repeatedly to be mindful and respectful.”

And as Maria pointed out, “you would think this sort of thing wouldn’t need to be specified as a no-go for that criteria.”

Today I had one of the most harrowing experiences of my life. Regrettably it didn’t seem everyone there found it quite so poignant. pic.twitter.com/3OdWavqC4P

— Maria 🇬🇧 (@MariaRMGBNews) April 15, 2023

Unfortunately, it seems that Maria was far from the first to witness such an act at the historic site, with thousands of irate commenters flocking to her post to share their experiences with disrespectful souls, and even more stopping by to condemn the thoughtless act.

“We saw the same when we were there just a few months ago. Total disregard,” wrote one.

“I visited in 2005 and every single person in my tour group had cried over the course of the tour,” one shared.

“Absolutely disgusting,” another declared. “When I went, people were taking selfies. So disrespectful.”

“Some people are really just willfully clueless and beyond ignorant,” came one hard truth.

And when one tried to suggest that everyone shouldn’t be so quick to judge, that they weren’t sure “we should police people’s facial expressions in reaction to almost incomprehensible experiences”, the rest were quick to disagree.

“This woman is posing on a railroad track that brought hundreds of thousands to their murders,” someone responded, to over 23,000 likes. “There is no nuance here.”

Another simply wanted to point out that “@AuschwitzMuseum asks people not to do this. It's so horrifying that it continues to happen.”

But the Auschwitz Museum’s official Twitter account perhaps put it best when they said, “Pictures can hold immense emotional & documentation value for visitors. Images help us remember.

“When coming to @AuschwitzMuseum visitors should bear in mind that they enter the authentic site of the former camp where over 1 million people were murdered.

“Respect their memory.”

Images: Twitter

"Do better": Project hosts roasted over "disrespectful" questions

Fans of musician Louis Tomlinson have slammed an "awkward" and "disrespectful" interview conducted by the hosts of The Project.

The former member of One Direction accused Carrie Bickmore and Peter Helliar of "stirring s***" during the tense appearance on Wednesday night, after they brought up a recent interview with Louis' former bandmate Liam Payne.

In the interview, Liam spoke of difficult relationships within the band before they split up in 2015, prompting Helliar to ask if there was any "beef" between the five former members of the band.

Helliar asked, “There’s been a bit of 1D beef recently thanks to Liam who’s been speaking out about the band a little bit. When you look back on your experience about the band, how do you feel about your experience of those days?”

Louis replied, “Oh, so the fishing’s begun already. Yeah, I see what you’re doing... No, listen, I’m immensely proud, as I know Liam is, I’m immensely proud of those days, obviously. It was an incredible thing to do, especially at such a young age and I have amazing memories, amazing memories.”

Bickmore chimed in, “When you say the fishing has begun - I imagine it is annoying have to answer retrospective questions like that. I am interested, how much do you want to talk about that time of your life to the media, versus how you don‘t want the talk about it again?” she asked.

“I’m more than happy to talk about it in every interview,” Louis replied.

“It’s something I’m immensely proud of, as I’d already said, it’s just when you mentioned the beef before, it sounded like you were getting ready to stir some s**t up, that’s all I’m saying.”

Helliar quickly jumped in to say, “No, I’m not a s**t stirrer Louis, do I look like a s**t stirrer?”

After more uncomfortable jabs from the hosts to the pop star, the interview wrapped politely, but Tomlinson's fans online were less than impressed.

“You had in your hands such an interesting and kind person and you wasted it completely (and wasted everyone‘s time),” wrote one.

“You should‘ve ask him for his WORLD tour, album, new album and all that stuff. But you made him uncomfortable with annoying questions of 1D. Stop relating him to that man or any of his ex bandmates, he’s a solo artist now, RESPECT HIM,” said another fan.

“Don’t ever waste his time like this again. If you want to ask questions completely unrelated to him, interview the people involved and leave Louis out of it. The man is busy on his first solo tour and yet makes the time to talk to you and you treat him like this. Do better,” wrote another.

Aquaman in hot water after disrespecting artworks

Jason Mamoa has landed himself in hot water after taking photos inside Apostolic Palace.

The Aquaman star shared several photographs of himself and others inside the Palace on Instagram with the caption: I LOVE YOU ITALY what a beautiful start to our day off enjoying ROMA.

The 42-year-old however was called out by fans who claimed he was given special treatment by being allowed to take photos.

Photographs are banned inside the Apostolic Palace because the flash from cameras can harm and destroy the beautiful artworks.

“Omg of course they let you take pictures (I thought it wasn’t allowed for preservation purposes),” someone commented.

“You cannot touch any of our masterpieces!!!” another exclaimed.

“We, regular people, are not allowed to film inside the Sistine Chapel,” another added.

“We can’t take pics but ofc celebrities can. Jada Pinkett Smith and Black women’s hair: History of disrespect leads to the CROWN Act

The fallout from “the slap” at this year’s Oscars continues. Last week, Will Smith resigned from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, after the academy issued a statement condemning Smith’s actions.

There have been innumerable media stories about “the slap,” including an episode of Don’t Call Me Resilient. “The joke,” however, has received less attention. “Jada, I love you. We Black women have learned to love our hair, despite a wider culture that has, historically, not accepted its diversity.

In fact, Black women have been fighting the court system for 40 years to get protection from hair discrimination.

Alopecia disproportionately affects Black women

In my 2019 book, Beauty in a Box I examined the dermatological research on hair loss. Two U.S. studies, from 2009 and 2017, found that central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia (CCCA) is often underdiagnosed; some estimates report that 17 per cent of Black women have this condition.

Some of the reasons why Black women are more adversely affected by CCCA are due to tight braiding hairstyles, long-term use of hair weaves, lace-front wigs and chemical relaxers.

While Rock might not have known of Pinkett Smith’s alopecia, in his 2009 documentary Good Hair he spoke to Black women about their hair, especially about chemical relaxers.

Good Hair was a successful film for Rock, but that does not mean he grew from the project.

Black hair discrimination and the CROWN Act

Glamour’s September 2020 cover story was dedicated to six Black women who endured discrimination at work because of their hair. The feature explained how curly, “kinky” or big hair carries meaning for Black women.

For example, a messy topknot is considered chic on a white woman, while a Black woman with natural hair such as large Afro or locs would be considered unkempt and has led to workplace reprimand.

On March 18, 2022, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the CROWN Act, banning hair discrimination at private places of work, federal programs and public accommodations. CROWN stands for Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair.

A 2019 Dove study found that Black women were 80 per cent more likely to feel pressure to change their hairstyles to fit in at the office. Black women were also 83 per cent more likely to report being judged on her looks than other women.

‘Subjects of Desire’ by Jennifer Holeness delves into issues of race, power and beauty.

The CROWN Act is not yet an official law. Despite President Joe Biden expressing strong support for the bill, there may not be enough votes to pass it.

Rogers vs. American Airlines

In 1981, American Airlines fired ticket agent Renee Rogers for wearing cornrows. She filed a discrimination suit challenging the airline’s policy prohibiting employees from wearing an all-braided hairstyle, claiming that such a policy violated the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and discriminated against her as a woman, and also as a Black person.

Legal scholar Paulette Cladwell explained how and why the U.S. Federal District Court of New York rejected Rogers’s claim that the style evoked her African heritage.

The court said her hairstyle was a result of having seen the 1979 film 10, starring Bo Derek who makes an appearance wearing long braids with beads at the ends. It became known as the “Bo Derek defence.” Rogers vs. American Airlines was a landmark case because it set a precedent that sanctioned the firing of Black women on the basis of their hair.

In 2016, the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled against a lawsuit filed by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) against Catastrophe Management Solutions (CMS) for firing Chastity Jones, a Black woman, because she wore her hair in locs. The lawsuit shared much in common with Rogers vs. American Airlines. Lawyers for Jones also argued that her termination was in violation of the Civil Rights Act.

The court of appeals ruled that CMS’s “race-neutral grooming policy” was not discriminatory because while hairstyles are “culturally associated with race” they are “not immutable physical characteristics.” The court ruled that a hairstyle might be closely associated with one’s culture but because it is changeable, it is not protectable under the law and an employer is within its rights to use it as a reason to deny employment.

Supreme Court nominee Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson smiles in Washington on March 31, 2022. (AP Photo/J. In 2007, an editor from Glamour in a “do’s and don'ts” fashion event at a New York law firm called locs “truly dreadful.”

Why Black hair jokes aren’t funny

When Black women are in legal and cultural battles for the right to wear their hair as they choose, jokes about our hair just aren’t funny. The straight hair standard of beauty has been called toxic not only to Black women but women in general for the ways it valorizes white, western beauty ideals.

One may argue that public figures should be open to criticism. For example, United Kingdom Prime Minister Boris Johnson often shows up with his hair in disarray which gets poked fun at by media. The difference is that there is no threat to his livelihood.

Until Black women can wear their hair how they want without risk of ridicule, reprimand or termination, a joke targeting Black hair is no laughing matter.<!-- Below is The Conversation's page counter tag. World champion surfer unleashes on “disrespectful” kids

World champion surfer Joel Parkinson has unleashed fury at a pair of vloggers he claimed were disrespecting victims of the floods.

Vloggers Paton and Steeze shared a video of themselves to Instagram sliding down a muddy hill near Duranbah Beach at Tweed Heads.

The video, which has since been viewed more than 10,000 times, shows the pair being angrily approached by the surfing legend telling them to show respect to the victims of the floods.

“That’s enough. Hey you f***ing idiots. Get the f*** off. People have lost their houses,” Parkinson yells.

“You should be more responsible you f***wits. You know people lost everything in these floods.”

“Oh settle down mate. Don’t bring that into it. This is not someone losing their house in the floods bro, so don’t do that,” one of the men responded.

The man continued to say that they knew people who had lost their homes.

Parkinson asked the young men where they live, before the filmer interjected telling his mate to let it go.

The video then cuts to the boys back at the top of the hill when Parkinson once again yells at them saying “they can’t do that’.

The older man behind the camera jumps in telling Parkinson “that’s enough”.

“Settle down. They’re having their fun alright. You’ve had your fun, you try to stop them from having their fun. We've had a gutful.

“Have fun boys, live.

“Mate we're here to have fun, they’re all having fun, no one’s hurting anyone or oppressing anyone except for you.”

The boys agree to sliding down one more time before heading home, when another man jumps at the cameraman prompting the boys to get up and defend him.

Parkinson attempts to calm the situation as the men all swear at each other.

'Have some respect,' the surfing legend says.

'You have some f***ing respect, look at my camera,' one of the vloggers replies, before

Parkinson calls it a 'piece of s***'.

Some viewers sided with the vloggers calling out Parkinson’s for allegedly doing the same thing last week.

“Floor was already f***ed. Parko he was doing the same thing last week I don’t see what the problem is,’ one wrote.

“With everything going on at the moment.. covid lockdowns floods this is nothing to get upset about! The kids are just having some fun.. the grass will grow back the first week the sun's out. He is just an entitled w***er assaulting kids for living a little is all I see in the clip!’ another commented.

“Hahahah Parko was sliding down that last week and he posted it on his story,” another wrote.

“Didn't I see him sliding down it last week? Now he decides it's disrespectful? GTFO. What a hero picking on some young guys having fun during a sh*t time,” someone else commented.

View the video here. Medvedev "hurt" by "disrespectful" Aussie Open crowd

World number two tennis champion Daniil Medvedev has revealed the Australian Open crowd crushed his spirit, making him reconsider his tennis career.

The Russian was defeated by Rafael Nadal in an epic final at Melbourne Park, in front of a crowd who vocalised their support for Nadal.

Appearing at an emotional press conference after the match, Medvedev told the media he would share an anecdote about his tennis dreams as a child.

"It's going to be a little bit of a new press conference," he began.

He went on to explain his early childhood and dreams for tennis success, and the moments where he doubted if should continue with the sport.

“I’m just talking about few moments where the kid stopped dreaming, and today was one of them. I’m not going to really tell why,” he said, adding that from now on he would only play for himself and his family.

“I’m going to say it like this. If there is a tournament on hard courts in Moscow, before Roland Garros or Wimbledon, I’m going to go there even if I miss the Wimbledon or Roland Garros or whatever. “

"The kid stopped dreaming. The kid is going to play for himself. That’s it. That’s my story.”

A reporter questioned whether Medvedev was taking issue with the crowd's response, which the tennis champ refused to answer.

However, he has previously made it clear that he was not disappointed with how he played during the Open, and answered the reporter's question by blasting the crowd.

“I’m just going to give one small example. Before Rafa serves even in the fifth set, there would be somebody, and I would even be surprised, like one guy screaming, ‘C’mon, Daniil’,” he said.

“A thousand people would be like, ‘Tsss, tsss, tsss’. That sound. Before my serve, I didn’t hear it. It’s disappointing. It’s disrespectful, it’s disappointing. I’m not sure after 30 years I’m going to want to play tennis."

“Again, the kid that was dreaming is not anymore in me after today. It will be tougher to continue tennis when it’s like this.”

When Rafael Nadal was questioned about Medvedev's struggles with the crowd, he spoke fondly of his opponent.

“Of course it’s better to have the crowd on your side,” Nadal said. “Tonight was crazy for me. But I really believe he has a great future in front and he is going to feel this love of the crowd in the future because he deserves it.”

Kyrgios fires back at critics who accused him of disrespecting Ash Barty

Nick Kyrgios has hit back at critics who have accused him of disrespecting women’s singles champion Ash Barty in an Instagram post.

The 26-year-old faced a backlash on Sunday after comments made following his win on Saturday night. After the men’s doubles final that saw Kyrgios take out the title with fellow Australian Thanasi Kokkinakis, Kyrgios told reporters, “I would say that we’ve created probably the best atmosphere this tournament has ever seen. Ash (Barty’s) father came to us and said the crowd was the best he’s ever seen. Obviously Ash is a hell of a player, but I think the ratings speak for themselves.

“People watch my matches, everywhere I play around the world the stadiums are full for that reason. So I don’t think those people that are screaming out before points, that’s got nothing to do with us. But there’s a reason why the ratings are the way they are and people are glued to the TV when we play. It speaks for itself really.”

The backlash from tennis commentators was swift and scathing, with English commentator Catherine Whitaker saying during an appearance on ABC’s Offsiders, “My jaw dropped when I read those quotes and I thought it might have been one of those where the quote is written down and it looks a bit worse than when you see the clip, sometimes that can be the case with press conferences.

“But it’s not the case in this instance. I mean, on a night that was about Ash Barty, without question, to say that, it is pretty extraordinary.” Offsiders host Kelly Underwood said it was “extremely disrespectful” and told Kyrgios to read the room.

Both Barty and Kyrgios’ matches on Saturday night smashed records, with Barty’s attracting 4.2 million viewers, the most watched women’s final since the current records system was introduced in 1999. Meanwhile, the men’s doubles final attracted 3.1 million viewers, despite its later time slot.

In response to the criticism, Kyrgios wrote on Instagram, “F** you media. Honestly, I said nothing disrespectful to @ashbarty. I said that the crowd this year was amazing and I feel as if @the-kokk1 & I were a big part of that.

“Ash’s father came to me and even said that. All I said was that when people watch me around the world the stadiums are full. I grew up with Ash & always knew her potential.”

He went on to criticise Max Purcell, after the pair had seemingly been at odds for much of the tournament. Purcell had earlier accused Kyrgios and Kokkinakis of being “disrespectful” to their opponents and agreed with calls for Kyrgios to be disqualified for hitting a ball into the crowd. Kyrgios wrote, “As for @maxpurcell you donut, regarding your comments after the match, you clearly have no idea about entertainment and sport.”

“Next time you lose another slam final, you should just put your head down and try to figure out how to play the big points better. No need to slate other Aussies in the media cuz people would rather watch paint dry than your S&V game style.”

Image: TPN/Getty Images

Famous Czech ossuary to clamp down on tourist photographs

The Sedlec Ossuary in the Czech Republic’s medieval city of Kutna Hora has become the latest tourist attraction to clamp down on photography, with new rules to be enforced starting next year.

The chapel, also known as the “Church of Bones”, features bones from nearly 60,000 skeletons as decoration. Some of the most popular include a chandelier made from every bone in the human skeleton.

According to the parish director Radka Krejčí, many tourists have removed bones from the walls, kissed skeletons, put hats or sunglasses on skulls for photos or committed other disrespectful acts despite signs in many languages asking guests to be polite and mindful.

Under the new rules, visitors will have to request permission to take photos at the parish for at least three days prior to their visit.

“We believe that our visitors will respect this decision and at the same time understand the reasons that led us to this step,” Krejčí told news agency CTK.

Krejčí said in 2017 about half a million guests visited the chapel, a number that is expected to keep rising.

The nearby Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, both managed by the Sedlec parish, will also be subject to the three-day rule.

Some popular sites around the world, such as Mexico’s Casa Azul and Tulum National Park, charge a fee for visitors looking to take a snapshot.

Karl Stefanovic: Today show host’s “disrespectful” comments about Prince George and Princess Charlotte

Barely a day seems to pass without news of another on-air gaffe, and Karl Stefanovic is at it again after making a bizarre joke about Prince George and Princess Charlotte.

DailyMail reports The Today Show broadcast footage of Prince William, 35, walking hand-in-hand with his eldest two, this morning, and Karl couldn’t help himself.

“I said earlier as well and a lot of people got very angry at me, but I do think they're fake kids, because I don't think I've ever seen a kid who is this well behaved walk into any kind of establishment,” the 43-year-old added.

“I don't want to be disrespectful, but they could be aliens!” Karl joked.

Entertainment reporter Richard Wilkins said: “that's disrespectful.”

Karl then asked: “Well, who behaves like that?”

Deborah Knight said in reply: “Well, people who have an amazing upbringing with multiple nannies perhaps?”

What are your thoughts? Tourist slammed for “irresponsible” and “disrespectful” video

A tourist has been branded an “idiot” and a “moron” after sharing an “irresponsible” and “disrespectful” video of his trip to Iceland on YouTube.

The footage shows an unidentified hiker traversing a narrow ledge above the Fjadrargljufur canyon in the country’s south. It’s outraged not only the internet, but also locals.

Why? For two good reasons.

Number one, it’s incredibly dangerous. The hiker doesn’t seem to be wearing the proper safety equipment despite walking across a ledge 100m above the Fjaora river that is barely as wide as the tourist's foot in some parts.

Number two, it’s highly damaging to Iceland’s delicate ecosystem. “The nature is getting torn up in that area because people don’t respect boundaries,” one local tour operator told The Independent. “Now this person has made a video of their stupidity and posted it online, it will probably motivate more irresponsible tourists to do stupid things.”

YouTube commenters haven’t taken kindly to the footage, either. “It’s people like you that cause the most nature vandalism in Iceland,” one person wrote. “You just motivated thousands of people to ignore ropes put up to protect nature. All the damage caused by those who you inspired is your fault.”

According to forecasts, around 2.3 million tourists are expected to visit Iceland this year, almost seven times Iceland’s population of just 335,000.

The huge increase in visitors has even prompted the island nation’s official tourism site to create “The Icelandic Pledge”, encouraging travellers to be safe, respectful and responsible when exploring the rugged terrain.

Have you ever visited Iceland? What do you think of this irresponsible video? Let us know in the comments below.

I am sick of feeling old and disrespected

Ruthanne Koyama retired at the age of 70 after 40 years in Service Chain Management. Not one to sit idle as the world went by she decided to write and share her somewhat quirky, but positive attitude on life and how to live the best of what is left of it.

I may be “archaic” but I’m not dead yet and neither are a lot of my friends of the same era. The problem is much of society seems to disagree with that. If you did a search on “ageing” you will find that the first page of Google brings back mostly government sites, institutions and public health sites. Try seniors and you get silly things like senior dating, senior housing and again health care facilities or nursing sites.

Great, good information for those people looking out for seniors, but what about us seniors ourselves. Outside of the dating site, which for most of my friends is not on the top of their needs list, there is little else that addresses us as people or even human beings.

What the heck is going on? I may be pushing 70, but I am not infirm, nor have I lost my faculties.

A concept that is often challenged by young people.

I was discussing a topic the other day with a young man who was saying he had experience in this, and in that and had done this and that. So I asked him how he could possibly have done and gained experience in some many things.

His response to me was: “You are out of touch with the world, your depth of experience (40 years) in this one area means nothing in the workplace today. The only thing that matters now is breadth of experience and you have none of that.”

The young man was 37 years old.

I was astounded and speechless. Not only because I found his comments demeaning but totally disrespectful. But, heh, maybe I’m just too old and take offence to easily. Again his comment.

But insolent young people aside, where are we as seniors? Are we truly nonentities?

I recall a saying I saw in some craft store one day which read:

▪ At 30 you are invincible

▪ At 40 you become insignificant

▪ At 50 you are invisible

▪ After 60 you cease to exist

This of course, was referring to women, but I’d guess there is something similar for men somewhere and now on the internet, not some little craft store. Being on the net somehow makes it official.

So my question is why aren’t we “the senior crowd” sticking up for ourselves. We taught our kids about it and I guess we are teaching grandchildren, but what about US?

The news abounds with bullying being the number one issues kids face today. But those kids are not alone.

Seniors face bullying on an unprecedented scale from millennials and gen X-ers.

As seniors, we face a barrage of name calling, discounting and rude behaviour, albeit not from our peers, but from the demographic that will someday be in control of our world, the environment and us.

No, I am not crying for a call to arms. Wouldn’t that look just too funny, a band of seniors with some single shot rifles from the Second World War, marching on who? Our kids, our former bosses, our doctors?

All I’m saying is for us to start sticking up for ourselves. Doesn’t matter if you are 50 to 90! Heck, we all need to forget that demographic and start to think and act like we have the best rest of our lives left to live.

Do you agree with Ruthanne?
