Aussie grandma deported for helping son cover up fiance's murder

Margaret Archer, the South Australian grandmother who was jailed for covering up the murder of her son’s fiancé, has finally been handed over to border force and will be deported.

For the family of Jody Meyers, it is a moment to celebrate. Meyers' brother-in-law, Michael Bates, said the family is "happy" Archer is being sent to the United Kingdom.

"We just don't want her around us," he said. "We don't want her in the community. We don't to have to be looking over our shoulder.

We don't want to have to see that face."

As police searched for Meyers in 2015, Archer was helping her son Neil to concoct a lie, claiming that Meyers had decided to leave her fiancé and their toddler and vanish from their Mannum home.

Margaret sent a text message from Meyers' phone to support the story, however Neil Archer had strangled his partner to death and his mum helped him hide her body.

The then 55-year-old used Meyers' own bank card to buy bags of cement, which were used to bury the victim's remains beneath the back shed of Archer's Mannum property.

"You can support your child in many ways, but supporting someone to cover up a murder of the mother of your grandson is a whole new level," Bates said.

Neil Archer was sentenced to at least 22 years in jail for the murder of Jody Meyers. His mother faced a six-and-a-half-year sentence, which she served in full. While Archer is free to continue living her life in the UK, Bates said their family is left grappling with her actions.

The SA Corrections Department has confirmed Margaret Archer was released into the custody of border force, but did not specify when she will leave the country.

Images: Nine Network / ABC

Hugh Sheridan splits from fiance after eight-month engagement

In a heartfelt birthday post on Instagram, Packed to the Rafters star Hugh Sheridan announced they had split from their fiance of eight months, Kurt Roberts.

The post, made to celebrate Roberts’ birthday, is reflective and heartfelt, with Sheridan speculating that having “first public relationship, that public, that fast, might’ve been too much pressure on us”, while also taking “full responsibility” for their working hours.

Sheridan wrote, “Today, I should’ve been landing in a couple of hours in Sydney to surprise my best friend. Happy Birthday to one of the most beautiful people on earth inside and out @kurtroberts_ you are an angel and I wish you all to the love and happiness you deserve.

“As you know, a year ago I came out as a human, a two weeks; later got cancelled, then in the darkness found light in Kurt. I did a horrific job when I proposed to you on the couch at our home… So I tried to make up for it and surprised someone who deserved better.

“In retrospect, having a first public relationship, that public, that fast, might’ve been too much pressure on us. Maybe it was COVID or quarantines or us working to hard (I take the blame for full responsibility for the working hours), maybe it’s dads death or all the above. The point is Kurt is incredibly kind, someone who is earnestly caring and helped me through a very tough time.

“I didn’t think it would be right to not say Happy Birthday to an amazing and caring human, but also not be false cause whether it’s right or wrong; transparency is what I promised you all.

“For now we didn’t make it, but we tried very, very hard, I’m so sorry for us that it wasn’t easy and I’m sorry for the added pressure. Lots learned, the heartache is heavy, but zero regrets for the greatest love. Bless you dear Kurt you beautiful human and thank God for birthday today, without you I wouldn’t be. X love shoosie.”

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Hugh Sheridan (@hugh_sheridan)

The couple announced their engagement in March after dating for three months, with Sheridan proposing on stage during the first night of the Adelaide Fringe Festival.

In May, Sheridan’s dad Denis died of cancer at the age of 74, and the following month, Sheridan came out as non-binary in an Instagram post. In the post, Sheridan wrote, ““I AM still a human (non binary/bi/me/Hughman) but I’m in a monogamous relationship with another human, who I love.

“I don’t accept a label cause it limits me … if you want it; take it. I chose zero labels for no other reason except the exclusion, limitations, separation, I believe are all one, deeeeep down. & … who know? why chose?!! Be you. Be true. Be free: to BE, to JUST BE.. you, a human, same as me.”

Image: Don Arnold/WireImage

Vikki Campion’s ex-fiance denies he is the father of her baby

Vikki Campion's former fiance has denied he is the father of her unborn child after Barnaby Joyce revealed over the weekend there was a “grey area” over paternity.

Ms Campion, 33, was due to marry media executive John Bergin in November 2016 but the couple split up in August and “haven’t spoken to each other since”.

She is now pregnant with her first child due in April and is in a relationship with the former deputy prime minister.

However, Joyce claimed in a new interview on Saturday the child's paternity is “a bit of a grey area” because he was on a trip to Europe at around the time she conceived.

On Monday, Bergin denied he could be the father of Campion’s baby, telling The Daily Telegraph: “I haven’t seen Vikki since late 2016, any suggestion that I am the father of Vikki’s child is incorrect.”

“I'm sure you can appreciate that I don't have anything further to add,” he said.

The former couple were due to marry in the NSW Southern Highlands in November 2016 however they split three months before the wedding day.

He did not comment on how the relationship ended, simply saying, “I’m just a spectator in this like everybody else.”

He also denied reports Campion had refused to return the ring.

“It seems that some people feel like they can just make things up,” he said.

The issue of paternity was thrown into doubt when Joyce himself said he cannot be sure if he is the father of Campion’s child, but he does not plan to get a paternity test and will raise the child as his own.

“It's mine, on the record, there it is. And can I say, even if it wasn't, I wouldn't care, I'd still go through this, I'd still love him,” Joyce on Saturday.

But on Monday, he said questions about the baby are “nobody’s business” but his and Campion’s.

“Anything that’s personal in nature is nobody else’s business but mine and Vikki’s, nobody else’s business. So we’re not here to be part of some ongoing litany of discussions about this,” he said.
