"The most gorgeous family": Tributes flow for slain mother and daughter

Police are continuing their investigation into the tragic deaths of Jennifer Petelczyc and her daughter Gretel, who were shot dead in their own home by a 63-year-old man.

The mother and daughter were killed on Friday, when the man was allegedly searching for his ex-partner before he fatally shot the pair in their home at Floreat, north-west of the Perth CBD.

Since their tragic deaths, loved ones and members of the community have come out in droves to pay their respects.

"They're the most gorgeous family and it's absolutely just heartbreaking that this has happened," said family friend Imogen Harrris.

She added the slain mum, 59, and her 18-year-old daughter were the "kindest, most light-hearted, beautiful people".

Neighbour Claire Andrews remembered them as people who "always gave back to the community".

Jennifer Petelczyc was known to be a caring and generous member of the community, as she installed a $5,000 defibrillator to be installed outside her home for local people to use in a health emergency.

According to police, the man who allegedly killed the mother and daughter, Mark Bombara, was a licensed firearms owner who possessed at least 13 guns and took multiple firearms to the Floreat home as he searched for his ex-wife, who detectives say was a friend of Jennifer.

It is understood that Bombara’s wife left him weeks ago and had been staying with Ms Petelczyc.

Officers confirmed the man's former partner was not at the home but the two women were tragically killed.

WA's Premier Roger Cook has described the murders as "chilling and horrific", saying, "This is a circumstance in which a woman has sought refuge from a friend. It would appear that as a result of that, that friend and her daughter have come to harm."

"They're innocent people ... simply doing what we'd all want someone to do when we're facing difficult circumstances. By every measure it looks senseless, chilling and absolutely horrific."

"I think we need to take the opportunity today ... to reflect on it and think about how we can all continue to make the world a safer place."

Gorgeous iconic department stores throughout history

Do you remember shops with names like Farmer’s, Boan’s, John Martin’s, Buckley & Nunn, or McWhirter’s? Or maybe you're more familiar with David Jones and Myer? If any of these names ring a bell, a team of historians wants to speak to you.

Professor Robert Crawford leads a team of historians at RMIT University and Macquarie University that are researching the history of department stores in Australia since the Second World War.

“Department stores have played such an important role in the lives of countless Australia, but their history has hardly been documented,” explains Professor Crawford.

Supported by the Australian Research Council, the project aims to collect Australian stories and experiences of their department store.

While the project is keen to collect stories from those who worked in these stores, it is equally interested in hearing from shoppers.

“Shoppers are an essential part of this story – their custom makes or breaks any retail outlet and department stores are no different,” notes Professor Crawford.

“By collecting the stories of shoppers and staff, this project offers a unique perspective of the department store,” he adds.

The research team has already interviewed a range of people across the country.

“This week I spoke to a lady about shopping with her mother at Grace Brothers in Sydney in 1947 and the next day I spoke to a man about taking his daughter to David Jones in suburban Brisbane in 1995,” recounts Crawford.

Participants of the project have recalled a range of familiar and forgotten experiences.
“Many have recounted their family’s unique rituals of going into to town and having lunch at the cafeteria, while others remember specific bits like the lift operators or the pneumatic tubes to transfer cash from the tills.”
While the project has undertaken many interviews, the research team is eager to speak to more people about their unique memories and experiences, so that they can get a fuller picture of the past.

If you’re interested in participating in the project or learning more about it, further details can be found at https://www.departmentstorehistory.org.au/

"Most beloved, gorgeous cat in Australia" seeking full-time carer

A Sydney family are seeking the paw-fect candidate to take on the role of cat-sitter for their feline friend, and if their job listing is anything to go by, they’re taking their search quite seriously.

The ad, posted to Seek, calls for a “Pet Nanny for an amazing cat” in one of the city’s most affluent Eastern Suburbs. The wording of the job description is familiar enough for anyone who’d nannied in their past, with just the minor catch that their ward would have four legs this time around - and may have them chasing their tail.

This “once in a lifetime” opportunity requests serious applicants only for the live-in and full-time position. A room and “all facilities” would be provided, all within a house described as both “wonderful and beautiful”, but for anyone hoping to bring their own pet along with them, this probably isn’t the job for them.

The family are firm on candidates having prior experience with cats - the more, the better - and won’t so much as consider an application from someone who’s coming to them without.

It makes sense when considering the duties of the position, which range from basic full-time care - with the likes of feeding, playing, and cleaning - to daily health checks, and perhaps most importantly to the cat, constant attention.

Professional experience isn’t a must, with the family willing to consider pet owners for the exclusive gig - as long as you have “experience caring for cats” behind you, you’re in with a shot.

It should go without saying that a “passion for cats and a deep understanding of their needs” is a must, so self-proclaimed animal lovers may find themselves a step ahead of the pack.

The position is full-time, and a schedule will be supplied with rostered days off included. However, the usual catch applies, and hopeful applicants must be willing to work across weekends and holidays.

The nitty gritty comes in the form of a valid WWCC (Working with Children Check), a first aid certificate, and police clearance, as well as unrestricted working rights in Australia, and “relevant VISA requirements”.

And the listing concludes with another reminder that applicants “MUST have prior experience with animals”, because as any pet owner knows, animals are unique little friends, and it’s always best to know what you’re getting yourself into.

Images: Getty

14 tips to get healthy, gorgeous nails

Keep nail beds hydrated

To keep your nails hydrated, rub a small amount of petroleum jelly into your cuticle and the skin surrounding your nails every evening before you go to bed or whenever your nails feel dry.

Keep a jar in your bag, desk drawer, car – anywhere you might need it. Not a fan of petroleum jelly? Substitute castor oil.

It’s thick and contains vitamin E, which is great for your cuticles. Or head to your kitchen cupboard and grab the olive oil – it also works to moisturise your nails.

Protect nails from wear and tear

Wear rubber gloves whenever you do housework or wash dishes.

Most household chores from gardening, to scrubbing the bathroom, to washing dishes, are murderous on healthy nails.

For extra hand softness, apply hand cream before you put on the rubber gloves. Slipping on some gloves will also protect your manicure.

Treat cuticles gently

When pushing back your cuticles (it is not necessary to cut them), come in at a 45-degree angle and be very gentle.

Otherwise, the cuticle will become damaged, weakening the entire nail, says manicurist, Mariana Diaconescu.

Avoid ingrown nails

For healthy nails, trim your toenails straight across to avoid ingrown toenails.

This is particularly important if you have diabetes.

Keep hands dry

Dry your hands for at least two minutes after doing the dishes, taking a bath or shower.

Also, dry your toes thoroughly after swimming or showering. Leaving them damp increases your risk of fungal infection and ruins healthy nails.

Get shoes in top shape

Dry your hands for at least two minutes after doing the dishes, taking a bath or shower.

Also, dry your toes thoroughly after swimming or showering. Leaving them damp increases your risk of fungal infection and ruins healthy nails.

Find high-quality socks

Wear 100 per cent cotton socks. They’re best for absorbing dampness, thus preventing fungal infections.

You can also use socks to cover up your messed-up DIY toenail art.

Make your manicure last longer

Stretch out the beauty of a manicure by applying a fresh top coat every day, says Susie Galvez, author of Hello Beautiful: 365 Ways to Be Even More Beautiful.

Try these vitamins

To make your nails as strong and resilient as a horse’s hooves, take 300 micrograms of the B vitamin biotin four to six times a day.

Long ago, veterinarians discovered that biotin strengthened horses’ hooves, which are made from keratin, the same substance in human nails.

Swiss researchers found that people who took 2.5 milligrams of biotin a day for 5.5 months had firmer, harder nails.

In a US study, 63 per cent of people taking biotin for brittle nails experienced an improvement.

Got milk?

It’s great for healthy nails! Add a glass of milk and a hard-boiled egg to your daily diet.

Rich in zinc, they’ll do wonders for your nails, especially if your nails are spotted with white, a sign of low zinc intake.

File your nails correctly

To keep your nails at their strongest, avoid filing in a back-and-forth motion – go in only one direction.

And never file just after you’ve gotten out of a shower or bath. Wet nails break more easily.

Try this finger massage

Massage your nails to keep them extra strong and shiny.

Nail buffing increases blood supply to the nail, which stimulates the matrix of the nail to grow, says Galvez.

Keep 'em polished

Polish your nails, even if it’s just with a clear coat.

It protects your nails, says manicurist Diaconescu. If you prefer colour, use a base coat, two thin coats of colour, and a top coat.

Colour should last at least seven days but should be removed after 10 days.

Avoid these polish remover ingredients

Avoid polish removers with acetone or formaldehyde.

They’re terribly drying to nails, says dermatologist, Dr Andrea Lynn Cambio. Use acetate-based removers instead.

This article first appeared in Reader's Digest.

I kept on seeing similar wall hangings going for a cool $180+ each. These hangings cost me $9-11 each, they were so easy to make (check out my story highlights under DIY) and I did them while kicking back and watching Schitts Creek on Netflix. Better yet, all you need is 3 things, raffia + little 3m hooks both found at @bunnings and craft rings. For a more organic look, each length of raffia doesn't need to be exact

Note to create a three-ring wall hanging like this, you'll need approximately four packets of 100m raffia rope

Step 3: Fold a piece of raffia in half and thread it through itself to attach to the ring. Continue repeating this until you've filled your ring. Remember to regularly bunch pieces of raffia you've threaded together tightly to create overlap - this will ensure your wall hanging is full and has enough volume

Step 4: To complete your wall hanging, trim the ends of the raffia (if required) to create a more even circular shape and hang on your chosen wall with a hook!

She then stuck the adhesive wall hooks to the wall and placed the gorgeous decorations above her bed.

The social media post swiftly received more than 12,000 'likes' from Keira's followers who were more than impressed with the result and some were inspired to make the design themselves.

Images: Keira Rumble / Instagram

See inside Jackie O’s gorgeous vineyard home that's selling for $65 million

Jackie Kennedy’s stunning Martha Vineyard estate has been listed for an eye watering $65 million.

Jackie purchased the expansive 340-acre oceanfront property, known as Red Gate Farm, in 1979.

The main residence alone is a whopping 5,456-square foot property and boasts five en-suite bedrooms, two “powder” rooms as well as a chef’s kitchen.

The home also included a chef’s kitchen and the property also has a two-story guest home with four bedrooms and three bathrooms.

The property has been listed by the celebrity’s oldest daughter, Caroline Kennedy who said: “Forty years ago, my mother fell in love with Martha’s Vineyard.”

"When she found Red Gate Farm, it was a perfect expression of her romantic and adventurous spirit. The dunes and ponds and rolling hills of Aquinnah gave her the chance to create a world where she could be so close to nature, close to her family and friends, and, most importantly, close to her beloved books. She even built a fairy treehouse for her grandchildren.

“Those grandchildren are grown so now it is time for us to follow my mother’s example and create our own worlds. We hope that a new family will treasure this place as we have for three generations.”

The breathtaking property was designed by Hugh Newell Jacobsen and was renovated in 2000 by Deborah Bere, Dean of the Yale School of Architecture,

Situated on the edge of Squibnocket Pond, the estate has over a mile of the Atlantic beachfront as a glorious view.

Scroll through the gallery above to see Jackie Kennedy’s gorgeous home.
