“Hypocrite”: Hughesy's on-air clash with Greens leader

Dave “Hughesy” Hughes had a fiery debate with Australian Greens Leader Adam Bandt about veganism on-air on The Fox’s Fifi, Fev & Nick.

Before Bandt appeared on the show, a clip played of Hughesy, who is a vegan, calling for the leader to "quit the party" after learning the Greens leader wasn't a vegan.

He questioned how Bandt could advocate for climate action without adopting a plant-based lifestyle, and the Greens leader was brought onto the show to explain his stance.

“So you are not a vegan?” Hughesy asked the politician.

“I’m not….” replied Bandt. “I applaud those who are, I applaud those who have made the shift. I’ve been thinking about it …”

Hughesy then loudly interjected “ … URGH, THINKING ABOUT IT?”

The Greens leader replied: “I don’t have a good drop-dead reason, but I’ve been thinking about it, and I can probably give you three justifications for it.

"Firstly, we’ve made big changes at home and basically only eat meat for special occasions, the rest of the time we’re vegan or vegetarian at home.”

“…. THERE’S ONE WAY, ADAM, THERE’S ONE WAY …” the presenter yelled in response.

Hughesy's co-star Fev then tried to make light of the situation and asked him: “What are you doing Dave?"

"Adam is doing the version of Leonardo DiCaprio and his private jet flying around the world while banging on about climate change, but you flew to Brisbane on the weekend,” he continued suggesting that Hughesy too was being a hypocrite by getting on a flight recently.

“But I don’t bang on about it,” exclaimed Hughesy.

“Adam is the leader of the Greens … it’s hypocritical! C’mon, you can do it, Adam, you can become a vegan! Be the change you want to see in the world, buddy!”

Hughesy adopted the vegan lifestyle for his own health, but he has previously revealed that it comes with its challenges and his family were also not that enthusiastic about the change.

Image: news.com.au/ Fifi, Fev & Nick

Robert Irwin called “hypocrite” over new TV ad appearance

Robert Irwin has faced some backlash online after appearing in a new TV ad for a classic Aussie snack.

The star appeared alongside G-Flip in an ad for Twisties, where the pair argued over what flavour should be crowned Australia’s official Twistie.

In the ad, Robert advocated for Aussies to vote for the chicken flavour, while G-Flip advocated for the cheese flavour.

“To my chookstituants. I say chicken is the people’s Twistie. Sure, cheese came first but secondborns were made to perfection, sorry Bindi,” Robert said in the ad.

“Chicken has always been the taste of our great southern land.”

Robert also posted the TV ad on his Instagram with the caption: “Repping Team Chicken in Twisties great flavour debate was not on my 2024 bingo card! But when Twisties calls, you answer. So let’s bring it home for chicken and prove team cheese wrong!”

Unfortunately, it didn't get a good response from fans, with many calling the star a "hypocrite" for advocating a meat-based product despite being an animal activist.

“This has really surprised me and I’m a little disappointed! With all the knowledge we have now of the c**p that goes into food like this, and of all people, I never thought I’d see this,” one person wrote.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Robert Irwin (@robertirwinphotography)

“For someone who loves animals it surprises me he’d be for either of these products who abuse and torture living beings,” another added.

“Why are pushing for chicken if you are such an animal lover? Politicians slam Albanese's "hypocritical" private jet use

Anthony Albanese has been urged to consider his carbon footprint after his controversial usage of a private jet.

A group of independent MPs have asked the Prime Minister to offset his carbon usage after it was revealed that he and two other ministers chartered two private planes to attend the same clean energy event in the NSW Hunter Valley.

Albanese was joined by Climate Change and Energy Minister Chris Bowen and Industry and Science Minister Ed Husic to fly to the region from Canberra on Thursday to announce a $1bn to support Australian manufacturing in solar technology.

Teal MP Zali Steggall urged the leaders to offset their carbon emissions from the short journey when it was revealed that the three men flew separately in two separate Royal Australian Air Force jets.

“I certainly hope they were offsetting the emissions of those two jets with companies, like Green fleet and other places like that where you can offset the emissions of your travel,” Ms Stegall told Sunrise.

“I certainly hope and I call on the Minister for Climate Change to do that. Look, as a lowly independent, we don’t get the luxuries of flying in the ADF jets.”

Private jets have a dramatically higher carbon footprint per passenger than commercial planes, with the average private jet emitting two tonnes of carbon an hour.

Mr Bowen defended the use of the planes, saying the use of two private jets was a decision made by the airforce for safety reasons.

“The Prime Minister has a large jet available to him and that would normally be what we take,” he said on Monday.

“The runway at Scone wasn’t strong enough to take a large jet so the air force … decided for two jets.”

Opposition transport spokeswoman Bridget McKenzie said the government should consider “jet pooling” and should make a conscious effort to cut down on the harmful use of private jets, which emit more carbon per passenger than commercial planes.

“I fail to see why these guys, when they’re leaving from the same place on the same day, within 30 minutes of each other, couldn’t have either shared the plane or indeed, some of them, if they couldn’t all fit, use the commercial options that were available to them to fly direct from Canberra to Newcastle to make the announcement,” Senator McKenzie said.

“It’s quite incredible.”

"Totally insensitive": Kate Middleton slammed for "hypocritical" move

Kate Middleton has come under fire after using a taxpayer-funded helicopter to travel a short distance for an offical royal engagement.

On Monday, the Princess of Wales travelled to the Royal Naval Air Station Yeovilton by helicopter, while the journey by car would've taken just under two hours.

She visited the airfield as Commodore-in-Chief of the Fleet Air Arm, an honorary title given to her by King Charles.

After news of her mode of travel hit social media, many were quick to slam her decision to use the helicopter, given the royal family's preaching about protecting the environment against climate change.

Anti-monarchists took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to share their frustrations with the "hypocrisy".

One person wrote, "She could have gone by car. About two hours from Windsor. But instead flies by helicopter for an entirely pointless visit."

Many others agreed, with one user writing, "What about climate change, didn’t Charlie also use a private jet this week to fly people to meet him .. do what I say, not do what I do."

"While her husband preaches to the rest of us about the environment," another added.

"Ahhh the Uber Helicopter again! And it costs the taxpayer £5,000 [A$9,600] each time!" a third pointed out.

"We pay for their travel so they take advantage!" another user said.

"Use a car, Kate!" someone else begged.

"More climate change hypocrisy," one annoyed user wrote.

"A waste of taxpayers money... not to mention the carbon footprint of her trip," yet another said.

Others labelled the Princess of Wales as "totally insensitive" and "disgusting" for choosing not to drive, given Prince William's dedication to climate change efforts.

The uproar comes after a new poll revealed the British public believes Prince William and Kate need to work harder before they rise to the throne.

"Trash show": The Project blasted over "hypocritical" apology

Former Project panellist Em Rusciano has taken aim at the show amid backlash over its airing of a controversial joke, accusing them of "throwing" a star "under the bus".

Reuben Kaye, who identifies as queer, was speaking about the hate he receives for his sexuality and for dressing up in drag, specifically from the Christian community.

“I love Jesus, I love any man who can get nailed for three days straight and come back for more,” Kaye said on the show, prompting a stunned reaction from host Waleed Aly and a chuckle from co-host Sarah Harris.

Harris and other members of the panel had a laugh, but it appeared that Waleed Aly was a bit taken aback.

Harris and Aly both apologised to viewers, but that didn’t stop the backlash, with some members of Australia’s Christian and Muslim communities planning to protest at Channel 10’s office over the joke.

The Project’s social media posts have also been swamped by hashtags such as #CancelTheProject and #BoycottTheProject, and channel 9 star Omar Slaimankhel, the 2022 winner of The Block, alongside his friend Oz’ Abu Malik, has emerged as one of the highest-profile critics.

Slaimankhel slammed the show on social media, particularly putting Harris on blast, accusing her of hypocrisy after laughing at the joke and then apologising afterwards.

He shared a screenshot of Harris and Aly’s apology on Instagram, with the caption, “She was p*ssing herself laughing and now wants to apologise”, and a second screenshot of Kaye on the program with the words “Trash TV. Trash show”.

Entertainment commentator Peter Ford, who is heard on radio nationwide, told news.com.au he was of two minds” about whether the joke was actually that offensive, but said the backlash came at a critical time when The Project was already receiving a great deal of hate.

“I’m of two minds to be honest – I don’t think the joke was incredibly offensive in my own personal view, but it seems that other people do think it was, and now it has become a big thing on social media, mainly on Twitter,” he said.

“At the moment the show really has a target on its back – people really want to go for it and jump on anything they can to somehow try and bring the show down.

“I suspect they’re spooked by all the sharks circling wanting to come after them and bring them down.”

Mr Ford pointed out that while panellists were seen laughing at the joke on air at the time, it was a natural reaction given the pressurised environment of TV life.

“It’s particularly a problem because they were seen to be laughing at the joke at the time, so you can’t then say the next night, ‘it was terrible, we’re so shocked’. But I understand that sometimes on air you hear a joke and think you have to laugh, otherwise you’re not doing your job, without having fully processed what was said,” he said.

Mr Ford went on to say there were far greater problems the programme is facing than the latest backlash, which comes just months after the exodus of Lisa Wilkinson, Carrie Bickmore, Peter Heliar, and comedian Tommy Little.

“Honestly, I don’t know how many people who were watching it on air at that time were shocked and offended … I think it’s unfortunate to have the hosts apologise on air, particularly if it’s not necessary to have done it – it seems there was no suggestion of advertisers pulling out, and no serious repercussions,” he added.

“If they have these kneejerk reactions whenever people get angry on Twitter, it’s going to be taking up a lot of time every night, because people will always find something – people love to get angry.

“I’m inclined to think if they’d not apologised, it may have worked in their favour to have something controversial, unplanned and potentially even offensive. Maybe that’s what people need to start thinking - maybe I’d better start watching The Project again.”

“They create a rod for their own back when they start to do apologies, unless it’s really vital, or they are truly sincere.”

Magda Szubanski labelled a "hypocrite" after blackface photos emerge

Magda Szubanski has been called out for being a "hypocrite" online after photos of her doing blackface in a comedy sketch have resurfaced.

The comedian had taken to Twitter to express her annoyance at Gina Rinehart for failing to condemn the racist comments made by her father, after Hancock Prospecting, run by Rinehart, withdrew its multimillion-dollar sponsorship for the Australian Diamonds netball team.

She said, "Lang Hancock went way beyond plain racism he suggested STERILIZING a race of people. So it's not virtue signalling - it's survival! Imagine being asked to wear his name on your back just so you can get funding for your sport."

One Twitter user took issue with her comments, and shared a photo of Magda performing in a comedy skit in blackface.

In the image, Magda is seen wearing a pink tunic and an afro wig adorned with hair clips, with dark brown paint covering her face.

Twitter users were quick to label Magda a "hypocrite", saying she had no right to weigh in on the matter following her own racist mistakes in the past.

"Magda you might need to sit this one out," wrote one commenter.

"But I think you are failing to recognise that Gina didn't make those comments, you personally wore blackface," wrote a second, before another added, "Not a good look".

Following the onslaught, Magda herself re-shared the photo, saying, "I've spent the 25 years since then listening and learning. And apologising."

Some fans accepted her apology, with one person writing, "The world has changed, we have all learnt more since then. Glass houses people, no one lives a perfect existence without anything cringeworthy in your past."

Image credits: Getty Images / Twitter

Police officer called a hypocrite for defect on car

A police officer who pulled over a man riding a defective motorbike has been called a hypocrite for having a smooth tyre.

Theo Glibo was stopped by the police officer at a service station in Largs Bay, Adelaide for having an illegal blue light on his motorbike.

The 24-year-old then spotted the officer’s front tyre which was “bald” and questioned why he was being ticketed while the car should also be unroadworthy.

“I’m copping a defect and this cop has a bald tyre and he’s not even gonna defect his own car,” Theo said in his video.

“I’m not going to put a sticker on it for something that’s going to be dealt with tomorrow,” the officer responded.

“Why not? That’s what you’re doing with mine, you’re a hypocrite,” Theo continued.

”If this was anybody else’s tyre, you’d defect it. Where’s the wear bar on that?”

The officer agreed that Theo was right and that he would deal with his tyre when his shift ended.

“You’re absolutely right, so I will defect that when I get back to my office,” the officer said.

Theo’s video went viral to the point that South Australia Police had to release a statement to address the incident.

“South Australia Police are aware of the social media post relating to an interaction between a SAPOL employee and a member of the public where the police vehicle was identified to have a bald tyre,” the statement read.

“SAPOL have taken steps to address this matter.”

Images: TikTok

Calls to rip up and refund "hypocritical" COVID fines

A Queensland politician has launched a petition to have all coronavirus fines ripped up after a 30,000 strong protest breached mass gathering laws and escaped without punishment.

As 30,000 people attended a Black Lives Matter rally in Brisbane’s CBD on the weekend, Queensland police said no fines had been issued despite the protestors defying the current COVID-19 restrictions on gatherings.

Katter’s Australian Party MP Nick Dametto started the parliamentary petition, saying that the Queensland Government’s rules were “hypocritical”.

"While the vast majority of Queenslanders have complied with the Government's restrictions as a matter of public health and safety in order to flatten the curve, the hypocrisy of allowing thousands of people to congregate during the protests has infuriated many, including those who have received fines for relatively minor breaches of the COVID-19 rules in place," the petition said.

"Your petitioners, therefore, request the House do all within its power to revoke or refund fines handed to Queenslanders who breached COVID-19 rules as a matter of principle."

As hundreds of Queenslanders had been hit with fines in excess of $1,300, Mr Dametto said that the treatment of protestors showed double standards, according to the ABC.

"I was talking to a small business the other day, which was shut down for a week because they had 11 people in their business instead of the allowed 10," he said.

"But then we're going to somehow allow 30,000 people together?

"By not getting out there and fining some people gives a very dark message: you're allowed to break the rules if you have enough people breaking the rules at the same time."

However, Tourism Minister Kate Jones has defended the actions of the Queensland government.

"I didn't let 30,000 protesters protest in Brisbane [and] neither did the Government," she said.

"The Premier said very clearly do not go to the protest. The Police Commissioner said do not go to the protest.

"Some people — the majority of them young — chose to ignore that health advice.”

"Hypocritical": Locals baffled by Sydney Harbour fireworks display in the midst of catastrophic blaze conditions

Sydneysiders were left baffled by a 20 minute firework display in Sydney Harbour that took place in the midst of a total fire ban on Wednesday night.

As wild bushfires and incredible winds have ravaged throughout New South Wales and Queensland within the past week, it is estimated the damage will cost hundreds of millions of dollars to repair, according to AFR.

The dangerous conditions from strong winds and extreme temperatures on Tuesday prompted a fire danger rating for the greater Sydney region for the first time ever.

While total fire ban remained in place for all of New South Wales on Wednesday, there were still fireworks seen over the CBD at around 9.50pm.

The display went on for over 20 minutes, with many locals taking to Twitter to label the fireworks as “hypocritical” and “insensitive”.

“Seriously, total fire ban, nearly 10 pm in a school night and there are fireworks galore going off in Sydney. P**s poor effort,” one resident wrote.

“One of my students told me his house almost burnt down yesterday,” another said.

“Now there's fireworks exploding everywhere in Sydney. Seems a little insensitive, sending sparks everywhere at a time like this.”

“How are fireworks allowed in Sydney on a day of total fire ban? Seems somewhat hypocritical given the tough stance that has been taken against individuals,” another local posted.

Dozens of fires are still ablaze throughout the east of Australia.

Firefighters are beyond stretched to their limits attempting to contain several of the out of control blazes.

The largest active bushfire is the Liberation Trail bushfire just west of Coffs Harbour - covering more than 150,000 hectares with a circumference of 1,000 km.

The NSW Rural Fire Services issued a statement that as of 10 pm on Wednesday, there were 69 fires burning across the state.

14 of those are at Watch and Act alert.

“Over 1000 firefighters remain in the field to protect properties and establish containment lines ahead of worsening conditions later this week,” the statement read.

“Corporate hypocrites”: Harsh words from Alan Jones backfires as shoppers pledge loyalty to Coles

Controversial 2GB radio host Alan Jones has called for his listeners to boycott Coles after they’ve pulled advertising from his radio show.

His harsh words were hoping to put a dent in Coles sales, but it appears that might have backfired.

Jones said that Coles should look at its own “value system” before passing judgement. He then proceeded to call the company “corporate hypocrites” and accuse them of ripping off dairy farmers.

“So I can tell my listeners to give Coles supermarkets, and their petrol stations a very wide berth .... We can both play the same game,” he said.

“And good luck to you by the time I am finished,” he cautioned Coles.

However, numerous critics of Jones have taken to social media to announce that they are shopping at Coles simply due to the opposition to Jones.

“Sorry Woolworths but I can ONLY shop at Coles now. Nothing to do with you per se but it's my personal policy to ALWAYS do the exact opposite of anything Alan Jones suggests,” one man posted on Twitter.

“Well I’ll now got out of my way to shop Coles since hearing this! Who does this old friggin’ dinosaur Alan Jones think he is?” someone quipped.

“I will happily drive straight past my local Woolies and go an additional 5kms just to shop with you following your decision to withdraw from Alan Jones,” another Twitter user posted on Thursday.

Many have followed suit, saying that they hope Coles holds its ground against Jones and his controversial comments. Despite Jones apologising for his remarks about New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, more than 80 advertisers pulled their money from the morning show.

“I will shop at Coles while they do not advertise with 2GB. If they renege, there are many other options! I like to feel that the massive female workplace in Coles group are supported,” another person wrote.

“I also will switch to Coles from now on even though it is a little out of my way to do so. Stay strong Coles,” a Twitter user added.

"Hypocrite": Karl Stefanovic blasted over controversial Duchess Meghan question

Karl Stefanovic has been slammed as a “hypocrite” over his criticism of Duchess Meghan’s plea for privacy, after previously condemning the media to protect his own.

During a controversial segment on 60 Minutes Sunday night, Stefanovic reported on the controversy surrounding the Duchess and her husband Prince Harry in a story headlined: How Meghan Markle lost her sparkle. The story marked Stefanovic’s comeback to a news role after being removed from the Today show in December.

“The couple appear to want a little privacy. Too much to ask? You bet. The public feel cheated, the tabloids have turned and the blame game – much of it directed at Meghan – is fierce,” he said in the introduction.

The segment, which claimed to look into “what went wrong” for the “insufferable” royal, saw Stefanovic interview several figures including British media commentator Katie Hopkins, who has made headlines over the years for her racist remarks.

Hopkins said of the Duchess, “She’s a no one. She’s a divorcee. When did we want a divorcee in the royal family? She wears bad clothes. When did we ask for that? We’ve just got so much better of our own.”

Viewers have criticised Stefanovic and the program for their “vile” and “inappropriate” coverage of the royals. The host was also branded as a hypocrite, as he had demanded privacy following his wedding to Jasmine Yarbrough late last year.

Broadcasting uncredible sources to publicly berate Meghan Markle for not putting on a show for the public is not exposing a ‘Markle Debacle’, it’s instead exhibiting a media debacle. #60Minutes
— Blake Mannes (@BlakeMannes) September 8, 2019

We wouldn’t want to demonise a woman with capacity and a view of her own, in the media, to tear her down. Piers Morgan slams Prince Harry as “hypocrite” over private jet use

Piers Morgan has slammed the Duke and Duchess of Sussex as “hypocrites” after the prince defended their use of private jets.

The prince and his wife Meghan have faced criticism after media reports emerged that they flew privately four times in 11 days this summer.

Prince Harry said “we can all do better” with sustainable travel at a launch of eco-tourism project in Amsterdam on Tuesday.

“I came here by commercial. I spend 99 per cent of my life travelling the world by commercial,” he said.

“Occasionally there needs to be an opportunity based on a unique circumstance to ensure that my family are safe – it’s generally as simple as that.”

Morgan accused the prince of making false statements to defend his travel practices, saying that he has flown on private jets for the majority of his known trips since his wedding to Meghan in May 2018.

“When he was pressed to explain why he uses fuel-guzzling private jets all the time if he cares so much about the environment, Harry point blank lied,” Morgan wrote on his Daily Mail column.

Morgan also said the prince’s safety concerns are “completely bogus” as he noted how Prince William and the late Princess Diana travelled with commercial airlines.

“Did you really accept a free ride on Elton John’s private plane to the South of France last month because you were worried about the safety of your family, or because you just fancied a more luxurious mode of travel?” Morgan wrote.

The TV host argued that the Duke is “fast becoming Hypocrite Harry”.

He wrote, “They want to be the first ‘woke’ royals – using their status as a platform to regularly dictate to us how we should live our lives, whether it’s demanding we stop using social media so much or instructing us to curb our flying – as they themselves bombard us with endless social media posts, and use private jets like taxis.”

Speaking on Good Morning Britain Wednesday morning, Morgan said of the Sussexes: “Nobody wants to hate these two, but they are making themselves look like rank hypocrites and you can’t as a Royal do that.”

A sovereign grant report published in June showed that the royal’s household carbon emissions almost doubled last year due to business travel.
