Rare coin hidden for decades to fetch eye-watering sum

Three sisters from the US who inherited a dime coin kept it in a bank vault for more than 40 years, and while they know it had some value, they didn't know just how much until a few years ago. The rare coin, struck by the US Mint in San Francisco in 1975, could be worth more than $US500,000 ($748,000), according to Ian Russell, president of GreatCollections, the auction house selling the coin. What makes the coin depicting President Franklin D. Roosevelt so valuable is that it is just one of two coins missing the "S" mint mark for San Francisco. The other dime sold for $US682,000 (over $1 million) at a 2019 auction and then again months later to a private collector. While avid coin collectors have known about the existence of these two extraordinarily rare coins, their whereabouts had remained a mystery since the late 1970s. “They were hidden for decades,” Russell said. “Most major collectors and dealers have never seen one.” The three sisters from Ohio, who want to remain anonymous, inherited one of the two dimes after the recent death of their of their brother, Russell said. They told Russell that their brother and mother bought the first error coin discovered in 1978 for $27,225, which would amount to roughly $135,000 today. Their parents, who ran a dairy farm, saw the coin as a financial safety net, and it was only until last year that one of the sisters saw the coin first-hand. Russell also said that their brother had reached out to him about seven years ago and told him about the coin, but he too kept it a secret. When Russell told one of the sisters about the potential value of the coin, she told him: “is that really possible?”. The coin, known as the “1975 ‘no S’ proof dime,” will be displayed at a coin show beginning on Wednesday in Tampa, Florida, and before <a href="https://www.greatcollections.com/Coin/1655587" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the auction</a> closes late next month, Russell said. Dr Chris Brown's hilarious dig at Channel 10

The new season of Dancing With The Stars premiered on Sunday night with Chris Brown presenting alongside longtime host Sonia Kruger for the very first time. The former Bondi Vet star left Channel 10 to join Seven a year ago, and while things reportedly ended amicably between them, he couldn't help but take a dig at his former employer on Dancing With The Stars. At the beginning of the episode, Sonia explained that all contestants were safe and “no one’s going home tonight”. Chris feigned relief that he was also "safe" and couldn't be fired on the first night of his new gig, to which Sonia quipped that only the dancers could be voted off and that she and Chris were "as safe as anyone can be in entertainment”. “Shout out to Channel 10,” he quickly remarked, eliciting laughter from the audience. The comment could be in reference to Channel 10 axing a handful of shows over the past few months, leaving several high-profile TV personalities out of work. Yahoo Lifestyle reported that the reboot of Gladiators had been cancelled after one season, and the network confirmed in May that both The Bachelor and The Masked Singer won't be returning this year. In another part of DWTS, Chris also joked abut how his previous role on Channel 10’s The Living Room made him “rivals” with Better Homes and Gardens presenter Adam Dovile. “Now Adam, we do need to address the elephant in the room,” he said. “We were TV rivals for many, many years in the cutthroat vicious world of Friday night lifestyle television. “It’s hard to even look you in the eye, the fury is so deep. In the latest feelgood episode of Deal or No Deal, 94-year-old contestant Phyllis Goldsack was given the chance to win $100,000. As one of the oldest contestants on the show, Phyllis kept everyone entertained as she challenged the banker. In one particularly sweet moment, game show host Grant Denyer serenaded her with a special song. A clip of the moment was shared on X, formerly known as Twitter, with the caption: "We're not crying, you're crying," and the crying emoji. "Okay the deal is, if I serenade you, with the song of your choosing, you get $800 from my pocket," Grant told Phyllis in the show. Carrie Bickmore's rumoured TV return

Carrie Bickmore is rumoured to be the next host of the upcoming reboot of the iconic Aussie game show Deal or No Deal. The former The Project anchor is the front-runner to host the series which is set to air on Channel 10 next year. It is understood that the network is desperate to get Bickmore onboard, but with fame comes a hefty price tag. “She’s one of the biggest stars in Australia and she comes with a very big price tag,” a source reportedly told New Idea, revealing that her current rate is believed to be over $500,000. “Deal or No Deal is currently lined up to air at 6pm as the lead-in to The Project - with hopes those eyeballs that tune in to the game show will stay on to watch Sarah Harris, Waleed Aly, and the gang,” the source added. “It’d be a win-win for the network, getting Carrie back on TV and hosting a show that could actually get people back into watching The Project - it’s sort of genius.” However, she isn't the only star the broadcaster have their eyes on. Peter Helliar is also rumoured to be part of the line up, with a much cheaper price tag. Deal or No Deal first aired in 2003 on Channel 7, and had a ten-year run before the show was axed. “Dig a hole in my chest”: Supermodel reveals double cancer fight

Supermodel icon Linda Evangelista has shared the devastating details of her cancer battle, after being diagnosed twice in five years. In a candid interview with <a href="https://www.wsj.com/style/fashion/linda-evangelista-steven-meisel-32909b7b?mod=style_lead_story" target="_blank" rel="noopener">WSJ magazine</a>, the 58-year-old revealed why she chose to "keep it quiet" and only tell a handful of people close to her about her health battle. Evangelista was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2018 after a routine mammogram, and decided to undergo a bilateral mastectomy: a surgical procedure to remove both breasts. "The margins were not good. [I chose this treatment] due to other health factors, without hesitation, because I wanted to put everything behind me and not to have to deal with this. "Thinking I was good and set for life. Breast cancer was not going to kill me." Four years later in 2022, Evangelista felt a lump on her chest and an MRI revealed cancer was present in her pectoral muscle. "I just went into this mode that I know how to do – just do what you've got to do and get through it," she said. "And that's what I did." "Dig a hole in my chest," she recalled telling her doctors. "I don't want it to look pretty. I want you to excavate. I want to see a hole in my chest when you're done. Do you understand me? I'm not dying from this." After another round of surgery, she was told the outlook was good for the future, but there is always a possibility the cancer could return. "Well, once it's come back, there's a chance," she recalled the oncologist's words. "I know I have one foot in the grave, but I'm totally in celebration mode." Troubled TV host Andrew O’Keefe arrested

Troubled TV presenter Andrew O'Keefe has once again been arrested after allegedly breaching his bail conditions. The former Deal or No Deal host was arrested at a home in Vaucluse, in Sydney's eastern suburbs just before 11am on Thursday. NSW Police arrested the 51-year-old before he was taken to Waverley Police Station, where he was charged with breach of bail. The Channel 7 personality was refused police bail on the spot and appeared at Waverely Local Court. The court heard that O’Keefe tested positive for drugs but his lawyer argued the swab was contaminated. He was then released on bail and spoke to the media, furious that he was unable to tell his side of the story. “You don't get to hear the story,” he said outside of court. “The thing about the justice system is that we get no time to prepare as the defendant. “And you're at a distinct disadvantage about getting the facts to even your own people.” O’Keefe’s lawyer argued in court that there was a limited information following the police’s swap test to check his client for drugs. “That's what we discovered in court today. There was a high probability of contempt, erm, contamination (to the sample),” O’Keefe said. Back in January, O’Keefe received six charges, with police alleging he grabbed a sex worker by the throat before punching her and pushing her to the ground. He pleaded not guilty to all six, which included three counts of common assault, intentionally choking a person without consent, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm. In February, he pleaded guilty to a separate charge of drug possession. In June, O’Keefe appeared in court to challenge a charge of breaching an apprehended violence order (AVO) against another complainant, and again in July to examine the evidence relating to the allegations of assault and choking. Mum left devastated after no guests attend her daughter’s party

A US woman has been left devastated after none of the 27 invited guests showed at her daughter’s third birthday party. Mum-of-three Breanna Strong had planned a massive celebration for her daughter, Avery, at KidsTopia Playground, a “jungle-themed indoor playground”, and had catered with pizzas, a Frozen-themed cake, and plenty of goodies for the kids. But, she was left devastated for her daughter when none of the kids turned up. Taking to TikTok, the 27-year-old shared her heartbreak in a clip that quickly went viral and prompted a flood of love to be sent Avery’s way. “We invited 27 kids to Avery's third birthday party. Not a single one of her friends showed up,” she wrote in the video, which showed the empty party room. “Money and time wasted. Breaks my momma heart so bad. But Strong said she was more upset than her daughter was, who was too young to fully understand what happened and had fun at the indoor playground. “She got everything she wanted. Pizza, Frozen cake, and jungle gym. She didn’t know any different rather than having fun. Just shattered my heart,” Strong explained. Commenters were quick to share their support for the young girl, with some sharing that they had similar experiences with their children. “Let’s have a redo. I’ll travel and got a bunch of kids who loves to make friends,” one suggested. “This is a rule at my house. If we are invited, we’re GOING!” another wrote. “We have been the only one that shows up. Fence and digging marks at the centre of lion’s escape

A fence and digging marks are at the centre of an investigation into how five lions managed to escape their enclosure at Taronga Zoo. One lion and four cubs were roaming around the Sydney tourist destination prompting emergency alarms to go off and people to run to safety. A family who was sleeping overnight at the zoo as part of the “Roar and Snoar” program were ordered to run as alarms blared “code one”. Luckily no one was injured and the lions are back in their enclosure with a statement revealing what caused the animals to escape. “An initial review of this morning’s incident has confirmed that an integrity issue with a containment fence enabled five lions to temporarily exit their main exhibit,” Taronga said in a statement on Wednesday afternoon. “The lions are now in a back-of-house holding area while a full review continues. “A full report will now be prepared for the NSW Department of Primary Industries. “Keepers and vets report all lions are doing well. “Taronga Zoo remains open and is extremely grateful to its staff and the community for their support today.” Image: Nine

Bindi Irwin responded saying that, although Australia Zoo had treated more than 100,000 animals, it had “never treated an emu with this particular disease”. “We will need to rely on our fellow animal experts with more experience with this avian flu,” she began, in a tweet in response to Blake’s call for help. Sir Elton John and his husband David Furnish have set their sights on their new home: a yet-to-be-completed penthouse in Toronto. In a recent interview with Globe and Mail, the couple revealed that they had bought one of the bespoke penthouses in the King Toronto complex. The music icon and filmmaker have chosen an apartment called the “Treehouse”, as reported by <a href="https://storeys.com/a-condo-in-the-wind-inside-elton-john-new-toronto-penthouse/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Storeys</a>. Designed by Danish architect Bjarke Ingels, the complex includes six penthouses that are described as like “living on a mountaintop”, according to developer Westbank. While they are all custom-designed, all of the penthouses share a natural theme integrated using trees, foliage, and outdoor terraces - with the Treehouse even boasting an actual tree. The new two-storey home of the Rocket Man singer will also feature four terraces, an inner courtyard, and an interior that will include a wine cellar and curved sculptural staircase. “It has great views over the west and south,” says Riz Dhanji, president at Rad Marketing, who represents Westbank. “It has a unique tree in the middle of the unit as part of an artistic factor, a custom brass kitchen designed by Bjarke Ingels, and a stunning brass curved staircase that’s custom designed. Located in the deluxe Saint Moritz development in St Kilda, in Melbourne's east, the apartment features elements designed by the cricketer, including that No. 23, his Australian cricket shirt number, be embroidered on fittings throughout. Grace Tame has revealed that the three wolves represented on the cover of her memoir are media bosses she’s constantly clashed with. The activist shared a sneak peek into the cover of the book - The Ninth Life of a Diamond Miner, A Memoir, is set to be released on September 27. The cover shows an illustration of three wolves and two of Tame’s face in which two of them are “growling” at Tame while another has his head bowed. Man digs backyard hole to “imprison” Dan Andrews

A Melbourne man has been accused of causing damages of up to $1 million to a Telstra phone tower, as well as a strange plot to capture Victorian premier Dan Andrews. Nathan Glover, 44, appeared in court on Thursday, where a police summary was read about the events of October 7th. The report claimed that the man rode an electric scooter to the Telstra tower about 1.5 kilometers from his home, broke in and started a fire. Mr Glover denies any involvement in the act of arson. The fire caused about $1 million in damage and took telecommunications offline, endangering public safety by limiting access to emergency services. Upon searching the man’s home, police found magic mushrooms, cannabis, wire cutters, petrol, two samurai swords, and an electric scooter and clothing that match CCTV footage of the offender. They also found a six metre-by-1.5 metre hole in Mr Glover's backyard, which he allegedly told police was to imprison the Victorian premier. Police allege that an account on the encrypted messaging app Telegram with the name “Nate Glove” volunteered in September for “special ops”, in the chat group titled Hoodlums of Melbourne Special Ops. “I’m down for special ops, but only if I get to burn something down,” the account allegedly posted. “Those 5G towers would make a nice fire,” the chat’s administrator allegedly responded. “My thinking exactly,” the Nate Glove account allegedly replied. Paul McCartney takes a dig at the Rolling Stones in candid new interview

Legendary musician Sir Paul McCartney has reignited the rivalry between The Beatles and The Rolling Stones with a brutal burn in a recent interview. In an interview with The New Yorker this week, Sir McCartney said of the Stones, “I’m not sure I should say it, but they’re a blues cover band, that’s sort of what the Stones are.” Of his own band, he said, ”I think our net was cast a bit wider than theirs.” This isn’t the first time McCartney, 79, has described the Stones this way; in an interview with Howard Stern last year, he said that he thought the Beatles were the better band, adding that the Stones, “are rooted in the blues. When they are writing stuff, it has to do with the blues. ”We had a little more influences... There’s a lot of differences and I love the Stones, but I’m with you. The Beatles were better.” Responding to his comments, Stones frontman Mick Jagger, 78, said in an interview with Zane Lowe, that there was “obviously no competition” between the two groups, and called McCartney a “sweetheart”. Jagger went on to describe what he saw as the fundamental difference between the two bands, saying, “The big difference, though, is, and sort of slightly seriously, is that the Rolling Stones is a big concert band in other decades and other areas when the Beatles never even did an arena tour, or Madison Square Garden with a decent sound system. “They broke up before that business started, the touring business for real.” The Beatles performed together from 1960 to 1970, while The Rolling Stones have been together for almost six decades since forming in 1962. Both being iconic 1960s rock bands, The Beatles and The Rolling Stones have always been compared, despite having vastly different sounds and career trajectories. Writing for <a rel="noopener" href="https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-lists/100-greatest-artists-147446/" target="_blank">Rolling Stone</a>, musician, Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band guitarist and Sopranos actor Steve Van Zandt said of the two bands, “In '64, the Beatles were perfect: the hair, the harmonies, the suits. They bowed together. Their music was extraordinarily sophisticated. The whole thing was exciting and alien but very distant in its perfection. “The Stones were alien and exciting, too. But with the Stones, the message was, "Maybe you can do this." The hair was sloppier. The harmonies were a bit off. And I don't remember them smiling at all. They had the R&B traditionalist's attitude: "We are not in show business. We are not pop music." Royals hit the red carpet at Bond world premiere

Daniel Craig’s final appearance as James Bond has received a royal debut, after Prince Charles, Camilla, Prince William, and Kate appeared at the film’s world premiere in London. No Time To Die, the 25th in the series of movies depicting the British spy’s heroics, was initially due for release in April 2020. But, after multiple delays due to the pandemic the long-awaited moment has been met with relief by Craig. “A year ago, this was just a dream,” he told reporters on the red carpet at the Royal Albert Hall. “It didn’t look like we would get here. But we have and I’m just happy that we’re here and we can celebrate with everybody,” he said. Lea Seydoux, who reprises her role as Dr Madeleine Swann, echoed the same relief. “It’s been such a crazy time for all of us,” she <a rel="noopener" href="https://7news.com.au/news/human-interest/royals-join-cast-of-bond-film-for-premiere-c-4096628" target="_blank">said</a>. “And now to celebrate, you know, with this film, to reunite. And it’s great. I’m really happy.” Appearing onstage before the screening, the 53-year-old dedicated the film to its cast, crew, producers, and frontline workers. “Just look at us and where we are,” Craig said. “To amazing cast and crew, MGM, Universal, [producers] Barbara [Broccoli], Michael [G. Wilson]. A lot of front-line workers here. [It’s] an honour for us - we’d like to dedicate this film to you this evening.” To thank them for their work during the pandemic, healthcare workers and members of the UK armed forces were also invited to Tuesday’s premiere. No Time To Die features Craig’s last appearance as 007, and when asked how he felt about leaving the role, he said: “I’m good. I’m really good about it.” As for his potential successor, Craig abruptly said: “Not my problem.” Also appearing at the star-studded event were official songwriters Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell, composer Hans Zimmer, screenwriters Neal Purvis, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, and Robert Wade.
