"Get over yourself": Sports fans call out Aussie Olympian's "privileged" rant

Aussie sports fans have seemingly turned on swimming champion Ariarne Titmus after she called out the standard of living in the Olympic village.

Titmus, who took home the gold medal in the 400m freestyle, labelled the conditions for athletes in Paris "ridiculous".

"Living in the Olympic village makes it hard to perform," the 23-year-old said in an interview on Sunday.

"It's definitely not made for high performance, so it's about who can really keep it together in the mind."

Some sports fans haven't received her comments well, with many taking to social media to accuse the athlete of whinging.

"Give me a break, why is it always the Aussies that make excuses?" one person fumed.

Another posted, "Get over yourself, remember how privileged you are to be there ... to complain is really petty."

Others argued that all the athletes in Paris are "in the same boat" so there is no point in complaining.

"Our athletes are becoming a bunch of spoiled whining Australian representatives. If you don't like your situation just leave go home and find a job!" one person said.

Another wrote, "I'm not very impressed if the competitors think that blaming their accommodation for their performance ... get over yourselves, and remember how privileged you are to have the chance to be there."

Australian Swimming head coach Rohan Taylor has also spoken about the conditions of the Olympic village, but said being adaptable is crucial for competitors in France to succeed.

"The Olympics has always been a challenge," he said. "Every Olympics I've been a part of, every Olympic Games that you see, is a test of athletes' ability to come here, compete and perform when it matters."

"It's about how you manage yourself and whatever environments are presented, whatever the beds are, whatever the food is, everybody deals with it."

"The Olympics has always been this way and that's the way it is. And that's the beauty of it."

"Pretty brutal": Peter Garrett slams Taylor Swift for price gouging tickets

Peter Garrett has taken aim at Taylor Swift, calling out her extrationate ticket prices for a place at the Eras Tour.

The Midnight Oil frontman joined 107.1 SAFM’s Bec & Soda radio show on Friday when he was informed that he was co-host Mark “Soda” Soderstrom’s favourite artist, or in other words, “his Taylor Swift.”

Garrett didn't take too kindly to the comparison, and launched into a rant about the price of Swift's concert tickets.

“I’m not price gouging like Taylor, to be blunt,” he began.

The radio hosts reminisced about attending a Midnight Oil concert in 1985 when tickets were just $15.90, compared to Swifts forking out hundreds of dollars for the highly anticipated Eras Tour.

Tickets for Swift’s Australian tour ranged from $79.90 for G-reserve tickets to $379.90 for A-reserve ticket, while also offering fans multiple VIP packages, reaching an eye-watering $1249.90 for a single ticket.

Some diehard fans were quick to complain about the lack of added value in the packages, which included premium seats with add-ons such as a tote bags, collectable pins, stickers and postcards.

Garrett continued, “I wouldn’t begrudge anyone’s success, that’s the first thing to say."

"She’s obviously touching a chord with masses of people, particularly people of a certain age group who have experienced growing up at a certain time, and what she’s singing and talking about is really ringing true with them.”

However, he also said that “the dollar end of it having looked at it from a distance, having been in this business forever, is pretty brutal.”

Garrett continued to share his disapproval of Swift's Australian domination, complaining about how five of her albums dominated the ARIA charts, booting Aussie artists off the ladder.

“She is so pervasive, she has become such a phenomenon, that she is displacing artists left right and centre. In our ARIA top 100 chart – that’s the Australian record industry chart – I think at one point in the last week or two, we only had three Australian artists in that top 100,” Garrett said.

“Not good enough! And that’s not me crying about it, I’ve had an incredible run. But I think about the younger artists coming through and it’s extremely hard for them now.”

We can pretty accurately tell when a human or dog is happy, but not so much with aggression

Humans are terrible at understanding aggressive characteristics in dogs — and unfortunately, in other humans.

Being able to correctly interpret social interactions is an important skill that allows humans to react appropriately in different situations.

But, research from the Dog Studies Research group at the Max Planck Institute for Geoanthropology in Germany shows while we’re generally clued in to distinguishing the nature of social interactions between children, dogs, and monkeys, we suck at identifying negative behaviour in dogs and humans.

Researchers presented 96 adults with short video clips of aggressive, neutral, and playful interactions between two individuals in three different species: human children, dogs, and macaques.

The clips included clues, such as body postures and facial expressions, but ended before the interaction took place.

Half the study participants were asked to categorise the interaction as aggressive, neutral, or playful, while the other half were asked to predict the outcome from three sentences prepared by the experimenters describing the three possible outcomes.

The researchers found that people performed better than chance for both tasks, even without prior experiences with the non-human species.

They selected the correct choice of the three outcomes in 50–80% of interactions and were most accurate in categorising playful interactions, which they correctly identified 70% of the time.

This wasn’t the case for predicting aggressive outcomes in humans and in pooches in particular. Participants rated aggressive contexts among dogs at chance level, and predicted outcomes below chance level.

“It is possible that we are biased to assume good intentions from other humans and from ‘man’s best friend’,” says first author Dr Theresa Epperlein the DogStudies Research group in the Max Planck Institute for Geoanthropology, Germany.

“Perhaps this bias prevents us from recognising aggressive situations in these species.”

“Our results underscore the fact that social interactions can often be ambiguous and suggest that accurately predicting outcomes may be more advantageous than categorising emotional contexts,” adds senior author Dr Juliane Bräuer, DogStudies Research Group Leader.

The research has been published in the journal PLOS ONE.

<!-- Start of tracking content syndication. Glaring errors in fan favourite movies

You have to be a real cinema buff or at least excelled in high school English class to notice some glaring errors in popular movies.

TikTok user Don Farelli has done all the work and pointed out the mistakes left in fan favourites such as Pretty Woman, Gladiator, the 1985 flick Teen Wolf, and the 1995 movie Braveheart.

Up first is the 1990s blockbuster Pretty Woman starring Julia Roberts and Richard Geere.

In the scene, Julia’s character Vivian Ward is seen nibbling on a croissant as she tells Richard’s Edward Lewis that she didn’t go past 11th grade.

Suddenly, the croissant disappears and in its place is a pancake.

The swap in foods has been spotted a few times before and there are even unconfirmed reports from the director for the change.

"Director Garry Marshall said he liked the performance she gave in the latter part of the scene better, so the croissant magically becomes a pancake, which she began to eat as they did more takes,’ it reads on IMDB.

"While this may be the case, there is still a continuity issue. In the first scene with the pancake, she takes a second bite. In the next scene with the pancake in her hand, there is only one bite missing.

"Not only that, but the pancake with one bite missing has a different bite pattern and is clearly a different pancake."

Next up is Mel Gibson’s Braveheart, who is seen speaking to a fellow actor in a scene.

Upon closer inspection, a man in the background is seen wearing a baseball cap - which very obviously has no place in the film.

Similar to Gladiator starring Russel Crowe, which features two modern items which are very clearly not meant to be there.

In one scene, a man is seen wearing jeans which is not the wardrobe for the movie and another scene shows another extra moving a water bottle out of the way.

The final movie is Teen Wolf starring Michael J. Fox, which hilariously shows a man realising his zipper is undone and tries to cover it during a basketball game.

Don’s TikTok video received a whopping 1.7million likes and has been viewed more than 15million times.

Image: TikTok

And you fall far short of that by using a term such as ‘complicit in racism’,” Mr Smark said.

He went on to argue that the article was “sensational” and that the Daily Mail’s accusations and attempt to spark outrage online risked damaging Ms Molan’s career.

Bruce McClintock SC, the barrister for The Mail, made a distinction between “one racist remark” and Ms Molan’s behaviour.

He argued that one remark does not make a racist, but Ms Molan had repeatedly engaged in offensive behaviour towards different races.

Mr McClintock reminded the court of an incident during one broadcast, where Ms Molan said “Me love you longtime” in a Chinese accent, and argued that her comments should be judged by current standards of what is acceptable behaviour.

“The fact it’s a joke makes no difference,” Mr McClintock said in reference to the “hooka looka” comments.

“Making a racially based joke about people’s names is really quite disgraceful.”

Ms Molan denied that the comments mocked Polynesians and insisted it was a lighthearted joke about Mr Warren pronouncing Manly Sea Eagles player Haumole Olakau’atu’s name.

Mr McClintock noted that Mr Warren had no trouble pronouncing Mr Olakau’atu’s name during the team’s semi-final game, and that Ms Molan’s comments had knock-on effects.

“Olakau’atu was born in Guildford and is as Australian as me or Ms Molan,” he said.

“Hiding behind all this is the assumption people like Mr Olakau’atu who have ‘funny names’ are not really part of our society.”

Ms Molan is seeking aggravated damages from the publication, telling the court that the accusations had resulted in people she respected turning away from her.

She also refuted any suggestion that she thought less of people based on their race.

Image: @erin_molan / Instagram

Kyle Sandilands jumps vaccination queue then says “privilege still exists”

Kyle Sandilands has drawn criticism for skipping the 120-person queue to get his first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine at Westmead Hospital on Tuesday night.

The radio host defended the move, saying he was simply using his “celebrity privilege” to jump the queue.

On Wednesday morning, the shock jock discovered live on-air that he had been called out in a now-viral Reddit penned by a member of the public also waiting in line for the jab.

“Kyle Sandilands cut in front of me in the vaccine line… Not the least bit surprised,” the post read.

When confronted with the accusation, Kyle said: “That’s right, that’s celebrity privilege right there.”

Co-host Jackie ‘O’ Henderson then asked how many people Kyle had cut in front of at the hospital.

“Probably about 70 people,” Kyle replied. “And then in the waiting room there was probably another 50 people, I walked straight through past them.

“But that is what happens when you are white, old, fat, male and a celebrity. Privilege still exists.”

But, it appears that Kyle is simply stirring the pot, with his management team making a statement to the Daily Mail confirming he didn’t physically push in.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Kyle and Jackie O (@kyleandjackieo)

The Reddit user backed up the claim in later comments and wrote that they were more amused by the fanfare surrounding the star’s arrival than upset by his queue jumping.

“The optics of the huge line and him pulling up in his Bentley were just too funny not to share. "It's been pretty crap": Jessica Rowe opens up about life after Studio 10

It's been three years since Jessica Rowe left Studio 10 - a role she says was the "best job I've ever had".

And since then, she's gotten used to wearing many work hats.

She's appeared on The Real Dirty Dancing, released a book Diary of a Crap Housewife as well as working as an events MC and mental health advocate.

But since the COVID-19 pandemic, Rowe is struggling to find work.

“Well, I gotta be honest in my professional life it’s been pretty crap,” she told news.com.au podcast How to be Happy.

“A lot of my work has gone, it’s disappeared because a lot of my work has been talking to people, hosting events, advocating for mental health but doing that with people, with an audience.”

Rowe said the loss of work had been tough, especially because she thrives on “connecting with people”.

“It’s been hard and like so many other people you do have to reinvent yourself and I think for me I’ve tried very much through my whole life, it’s been a series of reinventions,” she said.

“But I’ve really struggled this year because what I thrive on is people, is connecting with people, having conversations.”

Speaking to former news.com.au editor, Kate de Brito, Rowe revealed that despite the many trajectories her career has taken, she never gets tired of the constant striving.

“I like to think of it not as not being a hustle,” she said. “I think sometimes in life things happen that are beyond our control but what we can control is how we decide to deal with it.

“That was a really good life lesson that my mum taught me.”

During her decades-long media career, Rowe said she had learn “what brings you that sense of joy and happiness is different” at different points in her life.

“There have been various times in both my professional and personal life where I’ve thought OK, enough wallowing, time to think what can I do, how can I find a sense of joy, what can I do that will bring me a sense of happiness and contentment,” she said.

“And I think what I’ve learnt over time is that changes.”

This ethos was what drove Rowe to depart Studio 10 in 2018, despite her popularity as host on the show.

“When I decided to leave Studio 10 I’d been there five years, it was the best job I’ve ever had in media because I think I was happy within myself,” she said.

“I loved that job, but it came to a point where I thought you know what I’m not happy anymore doing this.”

Rowe said she knew it was the right time to go “because I listened to my heart”.

“Too often we don’t tap into our heart and it could be different things for different people – it might be intuition, it might be a feeling in your gut (or) a sense of things not being right and too often we ignore that we try and be logical, rational,” she said.

“My heart was saying to me you are tired, you are juggling too much and you aren’t happy.”

A post shared by DET DANSKE KONGEHUS 🇩🇰 (@detdanskekongehus) on Oct 26, 2020 at 9:10am PDT

And Christmas can’t be celebrated without the perfect holiday outfit, and Princess Mary delivered in the style department.

The Princess opted for a full purple ensemble featuring a loose fitting top with a keyhole neckline as she joined guests at Julemaerkehjemmet Liljeborg in Roskilde.

She paired it with a set of wide-legged trousers and kept her hair straight and simple.

View this post on Instagram

Samfundsansvar, bæredygtighed og klima var på programmet, da Hendes Kongelige Højhed Kronprinsessen i dag uddelte CSR Prisen til Arla Foods, A.P.
