How listening to music could help you beat insomnia

<p><em><a href="https://theconversation.com/profiles/victoria-williamson-277929">Victoria Williamson</a>, <a href="https://theconversation.com/institutions/university-of-sheffield-1147">University of Sheffield</a></em></p> <p>In our hectic world, a good night’s sleep is worth its weight in gold when it comes to improving <a href="http://www.apa.org/topics/sleep/why.aspx">physical and mental well-being</a>. Much more than a basic method of energy conservation, sleep is a state during which muscle and bone are generated and repaired, and memories and learning systems are updated. Sleep also allows the body and brain to clear out the toxic byproducts of the day’s waking activity that might otherwise build up and cause harm. <a href="http://healthysleep.med.harvard.edu/healthy/matters/benefits-of-sleep/why-do-we-sleep">In short, good sleep is a cornerstone of human health</a>.</p> <p>Sadly, not all of us are blessed with the bounty of a good night’s slumber after a long and often tiring day. <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1978319/">Around 30% of adults</a> experience chronic insomnia at some point in their life – where sleep is disrupted for more than a month. Estimates are even higher in older populations and those who experience regular stress.</p> <p><a href="http://www.webmd.com/sleep-disorders/features/10-results-sleep-loss#1">Insomnia can be devastating</a>, and has been linked to cognitive deficiencies – such as memory lapses, psychological problems including mood and anxiety disorders, and long-term health concerns including obesity and dementia. The most severe cases of chronic insomnia can even increase <a href="http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/290065.php">the risk of mortality</a>.</p> <figure><iframe src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/TTDDK6goHVg?wmode=transparent&amp;start=0" width="440" height="260" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen"></iframe></figure> <p>The cost of insomnia goes well beyond just health. According to the National Sleep Foundation, insomniacs are two to four times more likely to have an accident – with over <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/features/dsdrowsydriving/">72,000 traffic accidents a year</a> in the US alone linked to sleep deprivation. Insomnia also costs US companies an <a href="http://www.nbcnews.com/id/12152327/ns/health-sleep/t/chronic-sleep-problems-costing-us-billions/">estimated $150 billion</a> in absenteeism and reduced productivity, every year.</p> <p>Given our need for regular and deep sleep, it is no surprise then that people with insomnia often reach for the medicine cabinet. Pharmacies in the UK regularly dispense more than <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/society/2012/may/11/nhs-spending-sleeping-pills-50m">15.3m prescriptions for sleep aids</a>. But this is not the safest route to a good night’s slumber, as the use of over the counter and prescription sleep aids can lead to harmful side effects, dependency and withdrawal.</p> <h2>Music for sleep?</h2> <p>Research has shown that listening to “self-selected” music – music of your choice – can actually shorten stage two sleep cycles. This means people reach restful <a href="https://theconversation.com/can-listening-to-music-help-you-fall-asleep-49864">REM sleep – the restorative part of our sleep – more quickly</a>.</p> <p>In the study, students who listened to 45 minutes of <a href="http://lib.semmelweis.hu/sepub/pdf/2008/a18426457">music before bedtime</a> for three weeks saw a cumulative positive effect on multiple measures of sleep efficiency with similar effects reported in older citizens in Singapore. Following all this evidence, the NHS now recommends “<a href="http://www.nhs.uk/Conditions/Insomnia/Pages/Prevention.aspx">listening to soft music</a>” before bedtime as a method to prevent insomnia.</p> <p>With all this in mind, <a href="http://musicwellbeing.group.shef.ac.uk/">our research unit</a>, along with colleagues from the Sleep and Cognition Laboratory at the University of Lincoln and Goldsmiths, University of London, has embarked on a new music sleep project, to find out what people listen to when they are nodding off – and why people believe music helps their sleep.</p> <p><a href="https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/16722236/Final%20sleep%20infographic.pdf">The first phase of our music sleep survey </a> has been completed by 651 people, who have told us a great deal about the music that helps them to sleep. We discovered the top rated composer of sleep music in our sample is Johann Sebastian Bach. He was followed by Ed Sheeran, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Brian Eno, and Coldplay.</p> <p>Aside from those few top rated artists, there was an enormous variety of individual choices – with 14 different genres and 545 different artists named. And it is this data which will give us the basis to examine the features of effective sleep music. Using computer programs we will be able to pin down the consistent musical features that support sleep among these many diverse musical sounds.</p> <h2>Face the music</h2> <p>We also found out a lot about the reasons why people are turning to music in the first place. And they are varied. In our <a href="https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/16722236/Final%20sleep%20infographic.pdf">research</a>, people highlighted the importance of music for blocking disruptive external (such as traffic) and internal (like tinnitus) sounds, for filling uncomfortable silences, and providing a sense of companionship and security.</p> <p>This suggests that a one size fits all approach to music for sleep is unlikely to suit all insomniacs, because people are tuning into so many different types of music for so many different reasons.</p> <p><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TTDDK6goHVg&amp;feature=youtu.be">The next step for our research</a> will be to expand <a href="http://musicpsychology.co.uk/sleep/">our survey</a> to cover as many populations and cultures as possible. We will then test the music that people report to be consistently effective at different stages of sleep using advanced sleep recording techniques.</p> <p>Our aim is to develop personalised music selection technology, combined with advice on music sleep strategies, as a complete package for people who need to restore their sleep to normal for the sake of their health, quality of life and well-being.</p> <p>Until then, the best advice we can offer when choosing music to put you to sleep is to trust your own musical choices over generic “sleep” playlists. You know best what you are looking for in a bedtime track – based on what you like and what you need from the music at the time. And in the near future we will be armed with the necessary evidence that will allow us to move from this “instinctive approach” to a more informed and optimised application of music as an effective aid in the battle against insomnia.<!-- Below is The Conversation's page counter tag. Relaxing in a sauna shown to reduce risk of heart attacks

<p>We always love bringing you good news, and this is the kind that encourages you to help your healthy by sitting around and relaxing. While going to a sauna has often been regarded as good for one’s health, a new study has shown evidence that men who visit regularly live longer and are less likely to die of sudden heart attacks.</p> <p>The study took place in Finland, where going to the sauna is a popular activity, and looked at the link between people who used saunas and the risk of sudden cardiac death, fatal coronary heart disease, and dying from any cause. The men included in the study were tracked for an average of 21 years.</p> <p>When comparing results, it was shown that the more frequently someone visited a sauna two to three times a week had a 22 per cent lower risk of sudden cardiac death than those who went just once per week. When looking at people who visited between four and seven times a week, that number increased to 63 per cent.</p> <p>The risk of coronary heart disease was reduced by 23 per cent for men bathing two to three times per week, and by 48 per cent for those who bathed four to seven times. Risk of dying from heart disease was 27 per cent lower for the two to three session men, and 50 per cent lower for those who visited four to seven times.</p> <p>When the researchers looked at the risk of dying from any cause at all, they discovered that men who visited a sauna two to three times had a 24 per cent lower risk, while those who went four to seven times saw a 40 per cent reduction in this risk.</p> <p>A hint for those of you thinking of paying a visit to your nearest sauna now: staying for more than 19 minutes appears to be much more beneficial than staying for less than 11 minutes.</p> <p><em>Image: Getty</em></p>

"I almost didn't have time to react to it, because I went in and then I fell into a coma and I woke up two or three days later and they said, 'We operated and you had a tumour.'"</p>

“Now is the time”: Dan Andrews relaxes lockdown

<p>Premier Daniel Andrews has announced that lockdown will officially be coming to an almighty end.</p> <p>In a brief statement on Monday afternoon, Mr Andrews told Melburnians the news they have been waiting to hear.</p> <p>Melbourne is set to move onto its Third Step.</p> <p>"Under the Third Step, and from 11:59 pm on Tuesday, Melbourne will move from "stay home" to "stay safe", with no more restrictions on the reasons to leave home," the Premier said.</p> <p>The 25km limit will still remain in place and so will the border between regional Victoria and metropolitan Melbourne.</p> <p>"Under the Third Step, Melbourne's cafes, restaurants and pubs can reopen. Outdoors with a limit of up to 50, indoors up to 20. Density limits, record keeping and COVIDSafe Plans also apply.</p> <p>"Remaining retail will also open. Beauty and personal care services can resume. 25 ways to relax that don’t cost a cent

"Major incident" declared as thousands ignore advice to stay away

<p>Officials in southern England have declared a "major incident" after thousands of beach-goers flocked to local beaches.</p> <p>Bournemouth and Sandbanks in Dorset were hit hard as crowds came to enjoy the hottest day of the year so far and ignored advice to stay away from the area.</p> <p>By Thursday morning, more than 40 tonnes of waste had been removed from the coastline.</p> <p>Council leader Vikki Slade said she was "absolutely appalled" by the scenes.</p> <p>"The irresponsible behaviour and actions of so many people is just shocking and our services are stretched to the absolute hilt trying to keep everyone safe," said Slade in the statement. </p> <p>"We have had no choice now but to declare a major incident and initiate an emergency response."</p> <p>As the UK is slowly easing its coronavirus restrictions, groups of up to six people are allowed to meet up outside.</p> <p>However, people are taking the newly eased up restrictions too far as people were found camping illegally overnight.</p> <p>Slade compared the scenes to a public holiday.</p> <p>"We are not in a position to welcome visitors in these numbers now or to deal with the full range of problems associated with managing volumes of people like this," said Slade. "PLEASE do not come. We are not able to welcome you yet."</p> <p>Assistant Chief Constable Sam de Reya of Dorset Police said that people should stay away from the area.</p> <p>"We are also reliant on people taking personal responsibility and strongly advise members of the public to think twice before heading to the area," she said.</p> <p>"Clearly we are still in a public health crisis and such a significant volume of people heading to one area places a further strain on emergency services resources."</p>

COVID-19 epicentre Wuhan records new cluster of cases after relaxing lockdown

<p>The Chinese city of Wuhan has reported six new cases of COVID-19 over the last few days which marks the first officially documented re-emergence of the virus in over a month.</p> <p>Wuhan is the city where the coronavirus first broke out last December and had not recorded a new case since April 3rd. The city had since eased lockdowns and reopened schools.</p> <p>The first new Wuhan case was previously asymptomatic, and the 89-year-old man had not left his residential compound since the Lunar New Year in late January.</p> <p>His wife also tested positive for the virus despite showing no symptoms, the Wuhan municipal health commission said.</p> <p>The residential compound has had 20 confirmed cases and experts say that the new round of infections was mainly due to previous community infections.</p> <p>The new cases highlight the potential for new clusters of infections due to carriers who do not look ill or have a fever.</p> <p>On Sunday, authorities also reported new coronavirus cases in northeast China, with one city in Jilin province being reclassified as high-risk, the top of a three-tier zoning system.</p> <p>The city of Shulan was raised from medium to high after raising it from low to medium the day before after a woman tested positive on May 7th.</p> <p>The new cases spike the overall number of confirmed new cases in mainland China to 14, which is the highest reported number since April 28.</p> <p>In Wuhan, more than 20,000 people will be tested in the area where the cluster of new cases was found.</p> <p>Almost 4,000 people have died across the city according to the official tally.</p> <p>There is speculation that the figure could be higher as China faces questions from other countries about the accuracy of its reporting on COVID-19 cases.</p>

“Relaxed” Prince William and Duchess Kate have ramped up PDA since Megxit

Relax with some French toast with balsamic strawberries and macadamia crumble

<p>Start your morning with this delectable French toast recipe topped with a delicious crumble and an oh-so-tempting strawberry sauce.</p> <p><strong>Serves: </strong>4</p> <p><strong>Ingredients</strong></p> <div class="article-body"> <p><strong>Macadamia crumble</strong></p> <ul> <li>35g (¼ cup) plain flour</li> <li>2 tablespoons caster sugar</li> <li>50g chilled unsalted butter, chopped</li> <li>40g (½ cup) shredded coconut</li> <li>40g (¼ cup) crushed macadamia nuts</li> </ul> <p><strong>Balsamic strawberries</strong></p> <ul> <li>55g (¼ cup) caster sugar</li> <li>1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar</li> <li>300g strawberries, hulled</li> </ul> <p><strong>French toast</strong></p> <ul> <li>4 free-range eggs</li> <li>80ml (⅓ cup) milk</li> <li>80ml (⅓ cup) thin (pouring) cream</li> <li>30g unsalted butter</li> <li>1 brioche loaf, about 400g, cut into 8 slices about 2cm thick</li> </ul> <p><strong>Directions</strong></p> <ol> <li>To make the macadamia crumble, preheat the oven to 180°C. Put the flour and sugar in a bowl and stir to combine. Add the butter and use your fingertips to rub the butter into the flour mixture. Stir in the coconut and macadamias.</li> <li>Spread on a baking tray and bake for 20 minutes, or until the crumble is golden and crisp. Remove from the oven and allow to cool. The crumble can be stored in an airtight container for up to 1 week.</li> <li>To make the Balsamic Strawberries, put the sugar, balsamic vinegar and 2 tablespoons cold water in a small saucepan. Stir over low heat until the sugar has dissolved. Add the strawberries and increase the heat to high. Bring to the boil and cook for 3 minutes. Set aside to cool, then refrigerate until needed.</li> <li>To make the French Toast, whisk together the eggs, milk and cream in a wide bowl. Melt half the butter in a large non-stick frying pan over medium heat. Dip four slices of bread, one at a time, in the egg mixture until soaked, then drain off the excess.</li> <li>Fry the bread for 2 minutes on each side, or until golden brown. Remove from the pan and keep warm while you cook the remainder of the slices.</li> <li>Serve topped with the strawberries and crumble.</li> </ol> <p><strong>Tips</strong></p> <ul> <li>Start this recipe the day before, so your crumble and strawberries are ready to go, and all that needs to be done in the morning is to cook the French toast.</li> </ul> <ul> <li>Serve this with ice-cream, even for breakfast, so look for the best vanilla ice-cream you can find or have a go at making some yourself. A life of long weekends is alluring but not practical

<p>When Microsoft gave its 2,300 employees in Japan <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2019/nov/04/microsoft-japan-four-day-work-week-productivity">five Fridays off in a row</a>, it found productivity jumped 40%.</p> <p>When financial services company Perpetual Guardian in New Zealand trialled <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/money/2019/feb/19/four-day-week-trial-study-finds-lower-stress-but-no-cut-in-output">eight Fridays off in a row</a>, its 240 staff reported feeling more committed, stimulated and empowered.</p> <p>Around the world there’s renewed interest in reducing the standard working week. But a question arises. Is instituting the four-day week, while retaining the eight-hour workday, the best way to reduce working hours?</p> <p>Arguably, retaining the five-day week but cutting the working day to seven or six hours is a better way to go.</p> <p><strong>Shorter days, then weeks</strong></p> <p>History highlights some of the differences between the two options.</p> <p>At the height of the Industrial Revolution, in the 1850s, a 12-hour working day and a six-day working week – 72 hours in total – was common.</p> <p>Mass campaigns, vigorously opposed by business owners, emerged to reduce the length of the working day, initially from 12 hours to ten, then to eight.</p> <p>Building workers in Victoria, Australia, were among the first in the world to secure an eight-hour day, <a href="https://www.parliament.vic.gov.au/publications/research-papers/download/36-research-papers/13812-heritage-note-no-1-2017-the-origins-of-the-eight-hour-day-in-victoria">in 1856</a>. For most workers in most countries, though, it did not become standard until the first decades of the 20th century.</p> <p>The campaign for shorter working days was based largely on worker fatigue and health and safety concerns. But it was also argued that working men needed time to read and study, and would be <a href="http://ergo.slv.vic.gov.au/explore-history/fight-rights/workers-rights/origins-8-hour-day">better husbands, fathers and citizens</a>.</p> <p>Reducing the length of the working week from six days came later in the 20th century.</p> <p>First it was reduced to five-and-a-half days, then to five, resulting in the creation of “the weekend”. This occurred in most of the industrialised world from the 1940s to 1960s. In Australia the 40-hour five-day working week became the law of the land <a href="https://www.smh.com.au/national/70-years-ago-today-the-40hour-five-day-working-week-began-20180101-h0c3dd.html">in 1948</a>. These changes occurred despite two world wars and the Great Depression.</p> <p><strong>Stalled campaign</strong></p> <p>In the 1970s, campaigns for reduced working hours ground to a halt in most industrialised countries.</p> <p>As more women have joined the paid workforce, however, the total workload (paid and unpaid) for <a href="https://theconversation.com/grappling-with-the-time-bomb-of-australias-work-rest-and-play-5330">the average family increased</a>. This led to concerns about “time squeeze” and overwork.</p> <p>The issue has re-emerged over the past decade or so from a range of interests, including feminism and environmentalism.</p> <p><strong>Back on the agenda</strong></p> <p>A key concern is still worker fatigue, both mental and physical. This is not just from paid work but also from the growing demands of family and social life in the 21st century. It arises on a daily, weekly, annual and lifetime basis.</p> <p>We seek to recover from daily fatigue during sleep and daily leisure. Some residual fatigue nevertheless accumulates over the week, which we recover from over the weekend. Over longer periods we recover during public holidays (long weekends) and annual holidays and even, over a lifetime, during retirement.</p> <p>So would we be better off working fewer hours a day or having a longer weekend?</p> <p>Arguably it is the pressure to fit family and personal commitments into the few hours between getting home and bedtime that is the main source of today’s time-squeeze, particularly for families. This suggests the priority should be the shorter working day rather than the four-day week.</p> <p>Sociologist Cynthia Negrey is among those who suggest reducing the length of the workday, especially to mesh with children’s school days, as part of the feminist enterprise to alleviate the “sense of daily time famine” she writes about in her 2012 book, <a href="http://politybooks.com/bookdetail/?isbn=9780745654256">Work Time: Conflict, Control, and Change</a>.</p> <p><strong>Historical cautions</strong></p> <p>It’s worth bearing in mind the historical fall in the working week from 72 to 40 hours was achieved at a rate of only about 3.5 hours a decade. The biggest single step – from six to five-and-half days – was a reduction of 8% in working hours. Moving to a six-hour day or a four-day week would involve a reduction of about 20% in one step. It therefore seems practical to campaign for this in a number of stages.</p> <p>We should also treat with caution results of one-off, short-term, single-company experiments with the four-day week. These typically occur in organisations with leadership and work cultures willing and able to experiment with the concept. Employees are likely to see themselves as “special” and may be conscious of the need to make the experiment work. Painless economy-wide application cannot be taken for granted.</p> <p><em>Written by Anthony Veal. Relax with a homemade apricot turnover

This crisp and flaky pastry turnover will bring out the summer flavours you know and love.</p> <p><strong>Time to prepare</strong>: 15 minutes</p> <p><strong>Cooking</strong> <strong>time</strong>: 20 minutes</p> <p><strong>Serves</strong>: 4</p> <p><strong>Ingredients</strong></p> <ul> <li>1 sheet puff pastry, thawed</li> <li>3-4 apricots, sliced and stones removed</li> <li>1 tablespoon arrowroot</li> <li>2 tablespoons sugar</li> <li>1 teaspoon vanilla paste</li> <li>1 tablespoon lemon juice</li> <li>1 tablespoon demerara sugar</li> <li>1 egg, beaten lightly, mixed with 1 tablespoon water</li> <li>Icing sugar for dusting</li> </ul> <p><strong>Directions</strong></p> <ol> <li>Pre heat oven 200°C.</li> <li>In a medium bowl, toss apricot with arrowroot, sugar, vanilla, lemon juice until there are no lumps. Set aside for 10 minutes.</li> <li>Place pastry on a lightly flour surface, cut into 4 squares. Spoon apricots evenly into each square and gently pull one side over to the other, making a triangle.</li> <li>Use a fork to seal edges, brush with egg wash and cut a few slits in the top of each to allow steam to release. Relax with ricotta pancakes with redbelly citrus compote

<p>Lyndey Milan delivers this unique citrus twist on a scrumptious breakfast classic!</p> <p><strong>Time to prepare:</strong> 10 minutes</p> <p><strong>Cooking time: </strong>25 minutes</p> <p><strong>Serves: </strong>3 – 4</p> <p><strong>Ingredients</strong></p> <ul> <li>Redbelly compote</li> <li>8 redbelly citrus (also known as blood oranges)</li> <li>1 tablespoon honey</li> <li>2 star anise</li> <li>½ teaspoon pure vanilla extract</li> </ul> <p><strong>Ricotta pancakes</strong></p> <ul> <li>2 eggs, separated</li> <li>150g (¾ cup) low-fat ricotta</li> <li>75ml low fat milk</li> <li>75g (½ cup) self-raising flour</li> <li>Pinch of salt</li> <li>Greek yoghurt to serve (optional)</li> </ul> <p><strong>Directions</strong></p> <p><strong>For the redbelly compote:</strong></p> <ol> <li>Finely zest two redbelly and reserve zest for the pancakes. Juice 2 redbelly to give approximately 100ml juice, strain and set aside.</li> <li>Cut a small slice off the ends of each remaining redbelly. Stand up on one end, and carefully, following the contour of the redbelly, cut down to remove the peel and the pith. Slice crosswise into about 6-8 pieces each. Using the tip of the knife, carefully pick out any seeds. Place in a shallow dish.</li> <li>Combine honey, 2 tablespoons of water and star anise in a small saucepan over medium heat. Allow this to bubble up, then stir in redbelly juice. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla. Pour over the redbelly slices and allow it to infuse.</li> </ol> <p><strong>For the ricotta pancakes:</strong></p> <ol start="4"> <li>Whisk the egg whites in a small bowl with an electric beater. Place reserved zest, ricotta, milk, egg yolks, flour and salt in food processor and whizz until combined or beat with an electric beater. Fold in the egg whites. (Mixture can be covered and stored in the fridge for later use.)</li> <li>Melt butter in a small 15cm non-stick frying pan, over medium heat until it melts. Wipe out with a paper towel. Spoon about 3 tablespoons of batter mixture into the pan, tilt to cover pan. Cook for around 3 minutes or until bubbles rise to the surface. Flip over the other side and cook for a further 2 minutes, or until just cooked. Place on a plate and keep warm, either in a very low oven (with the fan turned off) or by covering with a clean cloth. Repeat with remaining mixture.</li> <li>Either ladle compote on top of pancakes and serve to the centre of the table – with extra compote and Greek yoghurt on the side – or divide pancakes between serving plates, ladle compote on top of the pancakes. Relax with a calypso mango curd ice cream sundae

<p>Perfect for a cheat weekend, this ice cream sundae pairs perfectly with the tropical taste of mango!</p> <p><strong>Ingredients</strong></p> <ul> <li>3 Calypso mangoes</li> <li>1 litre good-quality vanilla ice-cream</li> <li>½ x 250g packet butternut snap biscuits</li> <li>½ cup pistachios</li> <li>½ cup shredded coconut, toasted</li> </ul> <p><strong>Calypso mango curd</strong></p> <ul> <li>1 Calypso mango</li> <li>6 egg yolks</li> <li>¾ cup caster sugar</li> <li>3 lemons, juiced</li> <li>125g butter, chilled, chopped</li> </ul> <p><strong>Directions</strong></p> <p>1. To make the curd, cut the cheeks from the mango. Using a large spoon remove the mango fruit from the cheeks. Puree mango until smooth. You need ¾ cup. Whisk egg yolks and sugar in a 6-cup capacity heatproof, microwave-safe bowl until combined. Whisk in ½ cup lemon juice. Add the butter. Microwave, uncovered, for 6-7 minutes on Medium/50%, whisking every minute, until the curd thickens and just comes to the boil. Stir in mango puree. Cover surface with plastic wrap. Refrigerate for 2 hours.</p> <p>2. Spoon the ice-cream into a large bowl. Stand at room temperature for 10 minutes, or until softened slightly. Fold in 1 cup of mango curd. Spoon into a 12cm x 22cm (base) loaf pan. Cover and freeze overnight.</p> <p>3. Process biscuits and pistachios until finely chopped. Stir in coconut. Cut the cheeks from the mangoes. Using a large spoon remove the mango fruit from the cheeks and cut into 2cm cubes.</p> <p>4. To serve, spoon half the biscuit mixture into the base of six serving glasses. Top with scoops of ice-cream and half the mango. Repeat layers. This island off an island is Australia’s best kept secret
