"We're giving them weapons": Charlotte O'Brien's parents call for social media ban

The parents of a young girl who took her own life after being bullied have joined a campaign to raise the age limit for social media.

Charlotte O'Brien was a student at Santa Sabina College in Sydney’s inner west, where she dealt with relentless bullying which led to the 12-year-old's tragic death.

Now, her parents Mat Howard and Kelly O’Brien appeared on 60 Minutes to ask “how many more Charlottes do we need to lose” before action was taken to protect kids from harm online.

When asked if she believed Charlotte would still be alive if social media was off limits to young children, Ms O’Brien replied: “Absolutely”.

“My personal opinion. Giving our kids these phones, we’re giving them weapons, we’re giving them the world at their fingertips,” the grieving mother said.

In the days after the young girl's death, it was revealed her parents had pleaded with her school to address “friendship issues” Charlotte was facing.

Mr Howard told 60 Minutes that despite her “ongoing struggles” the last two weeks of Charlotte’s life were “the best two weeks that I can remember with her”, adding, "We thought we were really turning the corner.”

“You know she’d come home from school that day and she’d had a great day. Kelly had made her favourite dinner that night. And that night she skipped off to bed, literally skipped. And we never saw her again.”

Her family revealed a “completely distressed” Charlotte spoke to a friend on her phone the night she died, and shared messages she had been sent online.

“So we can’t say exactly what we’ve been told, but what I will tell you is what we’ve been told is some of the worst words that anybody should have to read, let alone a 12-year-old girl,” Mr Howard said.

Recalling the heart-wrenching moment they found their daughter's body, Ms O'Brien said she pleaded for answers from police on how she would've taken her own life.

“I just kept saying to the police that morning, ‘Where did she get the knowledge and the means? Where did she get the knowledge and the means?’,” she said.

“I couldn’t wrap my head around it, and he (the police officer) just said to me, ‘This is the age of information. She just needed to Google it’. And for me, I’m so devastated by that because I gave her that phone.”

Charlotte’s parents have travelled to Canberra to meet with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, ahead of legislation to raise the age of using social media from 13 to 16.

“I intend to say, ‘Please, Mr. Albanese, raise the age of social media to 16, because 36

months could change a lifetime’. That’s what I’m going to say,” Ms O’Brien said.

Mr Howard said, “Charlotte was not the first and she’s already not the last. And this will continue to happen unless we make the right decisions.”

The controversial bill to raise the age on social media platforms is set to go before Australia’s federal parliament this week, with support from both major parties.

Need to talk to someone? King Charles III “saving” title for Princess Charlotte

King Charles III is reportedly saving the title of Duchess of Edinburgh for his granddaughter Princess Charlotte.

It was previously expected that when Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, died in 2021, the title would be given to Prince Edward.

But Charles inherited the title and now its future is up in air with talks of him saving it for Princess Charlotte as she is third in line to the throne.

"It would be a fitting way to remember the Queen – who, of course, had the title Duchess of Edinburgh – and a way for His Majesty to honour the line of succession,” a source told The Mail on Sunday.

The Palace did not release any comment about the title.

Princess Charlotte is the first female in the Royal Family to not be removed from her line of succession by her younger brother thanks to the Succession to the Crown Act (2013).

The new law saw women born in the Royal Family after October 2011 holding their place of succession no matter if they had a younger male in the family.

"It is not beyond the realms of possibility that she will accede the throne if, for example, Prince George does not have children," the source continued.

The decision of who becomes the Duke or Duchess of Edinburgh was always going to be King Charles’ decision.

It was also his parents’ wish that Prince Edward would become the next Duke of Edinburgh, but now only time will tell.

Images: Getty

Outrage over coverage of Charlotte at Platinum Jubilee

Viewers of the Platinum Jubilee’s Party at the Palace have criticised the BBC for showing Princess Charlotte looking “bored”.

The young royal attended the concert celebrating the Queen’s 70 years on the throne with mum, Kate Middleton and Dad, Prince William alongside older brother George.

She looked thrilled for much of the evening, proudly waving a flag with her sibling. But occasionally, the camera panned to the seven-year-old yawning and looking a little disinterested.

Those watching at home were quick to condemn the broadcaster, insisting the children had had a long day, with both George and Charlotte accompanying their parents on a royal visit to Wales that morning.

Children’s author Helena Pielichaty said: “Stop panning to Prince George and Princess Charlotte just to catch them looking bored and fidgety – give them a break.”

Someone else wrote on Twitter: “Everyone saying Prince George and Princess Charlotte are ‘bored’. They were in Cardiff mere hours ago – they’ve had a busy day! At their age I’d have been zonked out my seat.”

Everyone saying Prince George and Princess Charlotte are "bored". She and George appeared to love the outing chuckling as Charlotte led musicians performing We Don’t Talk About Bruno from the hit Disney film Encanto.

Younger brother Prince Louis, who appeared on the Buckingham Palace’s balcony with his family after Trooping the Colour on Thursday – missed out on the visit, as well as the day three celebrations.

The Queen was also not in attendance after missing Sunday's Epsom Derby Day, opting instead to watch it on TV from Windsor Castle in her “comfy clothes”. She also skipped Friday’s Service of thanksgiving after experiencing “discomfort” during Trooping the Colour on Thursday.

Images: Getty

Take a look at Princess Charlotte now

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge shared a sweet photo on Instagram on the weekend of their six-year-old daughter, Princess Charlotte, cradling a delicate, orange and black butterfly.

In the post, her loving parents wrote: “We wanted to share these beautiful Peacock and Red Admiral butterflies as part of Big #ButterflyCount initiative taking place across the UK.”

The initiative is run by Butterfly Conservation, a British charity which is trying to find out more about the health of the environment by asking people to count the number of butterflies they see.

On their Instagram post, Prince William and Kate wrote: “@savebutterflies are encouraging us all to count these incredible creatures because not only are they beautiful creatures to be around but they are also extremely important. Butterflies are vital parts of the ecosystem as both pollinators and components of the food chain. Hopefully you can beat last year’s total, @savebutterflies.”

The particular butterfly which Charlotte is holding is called a red admiral butterfly and it’s found in Europe, North and South America and Asia. It’s the most popular butterfly in urban areas, according to the US Forest Service.

While many royal watchers and fans enjoyed seeing this rare photo of Charlotte with the beautiful butterfly, some noticed ways in which she’s beginning to resemble her royal relatives.

“She looks like queen Elizabeth,” observed one person.

“The mini edition of Kate.... charlotte is so pretty,” another wrote.

“Charlotte looks so beautiful,” added another. “She is the female version of William. Daddy must be very proud of his little girl.”

This isn’t the first time Charlotte has been enjoying the beauty of the natural world around her. Last year, Charlotte and her brothers, Prince George and Prince Louis, asked some animal-related questions to the well-known British environmentalist, David Attenborough, in a very cute video.

At the time, Charlotte was five years old and she said: “I like spiders. Do you like spiders too?”

Attenborough answered: “I love spiders, I’m so glad you like them! I think they’re wonderful things. Why is it that people are so frightened of them? I think it’s because they’ve actually got eight legs, which is much more than us. And if you’ve got eight legs, you can move in any direction, so you can never be quite sure which way that spider is going to go.”

As well, in May of this year we were able to see a new photo of princess Charlotte as her family celebrated her sixth birthday. The photo was taken by the duchess who has taken to being the unofficial family photographer, snapping beautiful photos of her children over the years.

Image: Instagram
