Royal photographer admits to faking iconic shot

Jason Bell, the photographer responsible for the official family portraits from Prince George’s 2013 christening, has revealed the truth about the shots - and admitted to faking one significant detail.

In the documentary Portrait of the Queen, Bell admitted to feeling pressure over getting the shot just right. It was, after all, the first time that four generations of direct heirs had been captured together in over a century - since Queen Victoria’s reign specifically.

The iconic picture sees the Queen and her four heirs - Prince Charles (now King Charles), Prince William, and Prince George - gathered around the chair upon which the Queen sits in the Morning Room at Clarence House, with sunlight streaming in around them.

The catch? The light wasn’t real.

“A christening picture is a happy picture,” Bell explained, “and when I think about happy, I think about - sort of - summer, and sun, and light, and bright.

“So I think in a way, that was my first creative decision going into it. I want[ed] it to feel like a beautiful, warm, summer-y afternoon.

“Obviously, the problem with that was I was actually doing the shoot in October in London and, you know, I’m a longtime Londoner, and I know that you can’t rely on London weather.

“So, what I did was I put big heavy lights around all of the windows and the window behind them outside in the street. And, you know, to get enough light coming through the windows to really feel like a sort of summer afternoon, you know, you need quite a lot of light.”

As well as the big creative decisions necessary on the day, Bell had to plan well ahead, and explained how “it’s always important to research around the project and you know, see what people have done before – who goes where. Where does the Queen go? Where does Prince George go?

“You’re thinking about the sort of lineage, if you like, and the structure of the picture wants to reflect [that].”

Bell also admitted that he drew inspiration from a portrait of Queen Victoria and her heirs in 1894 - in that picture, Queen Victoria was holding her youngest direct heir, who would go on to become King Edward VIII.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Jason Bell (@jasonbellphoto)

And with the opportunity may have been daunting, and the stakes for his career high, Bell noted that one detail in particular stood out to him, confessing that he was “quite drawn” to it.

“The personal element of it, you know, is the same as it is in any other family,” he said, “and that’s kind of interesting watching, you know, them be[ing] a family together if you like.”

Images: @jasonbellphoto / Instagram, Portrait of the Queen / Sharmill

Why Elizabeth, Charles and Camilla may miss Lilibet Diana's christening

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s first daughter, Lilibet Diana, named for Queen Elizabeth and Princess Diana, is five months old and hasn’t been christened yet, which prompted speculation from royal watchers on where and when a christening would eventually take place.

This speculation prompted a spokesperson for the family to say yesterday that plans for the christening “have not been finalised”. A palace insider said there would not be a christening in the UK.

Speaking to The Sun, author and editor of Majesty Magazine Ingrid Seward that if the christening took place in the United States, where Harry and Meghan now live, much of Harry’s immediate family would be absent.

The reason key members of the Royal Family, including great-grandmother Queen Elizabeth, grandparents Prince Charles and Camilla and uncle Prince Charles and aunt Kate may miss Lilibet’s christening is that their schedules simply wouldn’t allow for it.

Seward said, "I don't think any members of the immediate Royal Family would have time [to fly over], their schedules are organised six months in advance.”

When the couple’s first child, Archie, was christened at Windsor Castle in 2019, the Queen and Prince Philip did not attend as they were in Sandringham. The Queen also did not attend the christening of William and Kate’s youngest child, Prince Louis.

It has been reported that Lilibet could be baptised into the Episcopal Church of the US, which is a member of the Anglican Communion. The Bishop who delivered the sermon at Harry and Meghan’s wedding in 2018, Bishop Michael Curry, is the head of the Episcopal Church and could officiate.

However, Lilibet would not automatically be considered a member of the Church of England until she came to the UK and joined a local congregation. Seward said Harry and Meghan could baptise their daughter privately at Windsor Castle, which is what they did with Archie.

Potential godparents that have been suggested by royal watchers include Princess Eugenie, Zara and Mike Tindall, or even Oprah Winfrey. Seward said the couple would choose someone particularly close to them, because, "with godparents you usually want someone who you've known all your life."

Meghan herself was baptised into the church ahead of her wedding to Prince Harry in 2018.

Image: NDZ/Star Max/GC Images/Getty Images

The sad truth behind Archie's christening photo

There are not many family events the Queen will miss out on; however, it seems duty comes first especially when considering the royal’s absence at great grandson, Archie’s christening.

Royal christenings are deeply symbolic affairs and each event sees the tiny tot donning the Lily Font and the replica Honiton christening gown that has become an iron-clad tradition.

When photographs of little Archie’ christening were released, many were surprised to see one familiar face missing, and that was the Queen who could not be present.

The official reason given was that her Majesty had a conflicting commitment, but questions arose why the royal’s diary was not called upon when planning Archie’s first significant event.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by The Duke and Duchess of Sussex (@sussexroyal) on Jul 6, 2019 at 8:14am PDT

A recent book, Royals At War offered an alternative perspective. Journalists Dylan Howard and Andy Tillett said: “Pointedly, the Queen and Prince Philip stayed away. They had been generous and understanding at their best.

“But they simply now felt publicly embarrassed by Meghan’s controlling behaviour, said a well-placed Palace insider.”

Over a year on since Archie’s christening, it appears there was more than what meets the eye after court documents filed as part of Meghan’s privacy lawsuit revealed she was left feeling “undefended by the institution” while pregnant and that she had been “prohibited from defending herself” against negative false press coverage.

Meghan and Harry announced their intention to step down as senior royals of January 2020, much to the surprise of the rest of the royal family.

On April 1, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex officially ceased all their duties and began a financially independent life in Los Angeles, U.S.

Duchess Kate christens “Boaty McBoatface” ship at royal naming ceremony

A British polar research ship was supposed to be given the title Boaty McBoatface after an online competition to name the vessel went viral in 2016.

But it was officially named the RRS Sir David Attenborough on Thursday during a royal ceremony and in attendance was the iconic naturalist himself as well as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

As they stood high up on the 129 metre ship, the prominent figures waved to spectators as they took a tour of the boat.

The Duchess of Cambridge who is also the ship’s sponsor, formally christened the boat by pressing a button to release a bottle of champagne that smashed against the hull.

Prince William also had a few words, as he said the group was there to celebrate a “true British marvel.”

“One that is strong, sturdy, and incredibly well engineered that deepens our understanding of the impact our behaviour has on the world around us, and arms us with the facts to do something about it, an icon capable of feats not seen before and potentially never seen again. And no – I’m not talking about you David. Those words wouldn’t do you and your lifetime’s work justice!”

“Through this state-of-the-art new ship, the British Antarctic Survey will help to expand global knowledge of the polar oceans and the impact of climate change on this crucial region,” he said in his speech.

The heir to the throne then made a cheeky reference to the boat’s almost-name.

“There is no person more fitting for this beacon of scientific research to be named after than you, David,” he said.

“You have shown us how awe-inspiring the natural world is, and also how fragile and endangered it is. And you have inspired us all to do as much as we possibly can to protect it.

“It is my immense privilege and relief to welcome Sir David Attenborough, rather than Boaty McBoatface.”

Scroll through the gallery above to see the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge at the royal naming ceremony.

Their Royal Highnesses feel fortunate to have enjoyed this day with family and the godparents of Archie. Their son, Archie, was baptised wearing the handmade replica of the royal christening gown which has been worn by royal infants for the last 11 years. The original Royal Christening Robe, made of fine Honiton lace lined with white satin, was commissioned by Queen Victoria in 1841 and first worn by her eldest daughter. It was subsequently worn for generations of Royal christenings, including The Queen, her children and her grandchildren until 2004, when The Queen commissioned this handmade replica, in order for the fragile historic outfit to be preserved, and for the tradition to continue. The Queen was not there

The Queen is a busy woman, so it’s no surprise that she was unable to make her great-grandson’s christening.

According to the BBC, The Queen wasn’t able to attend due to a “prior engagement”.

2. The history behind little Archie’s christening gown

Archie was baptised wearing the handmade replica of the royal christening gown which has been worn by royal babies for the last 11 years.

The original Royal Christening Robe, made of fine Honiton lace was commissioned by Queen Victoria in 1841 and was first worn by her eldest daughter.

3. Who are the random people at the back of the photo?

Some may not recognise the two women standing alongside the royal family, but they are Lady Jane Fellowes and Lady Sarah McCorquodale, the sisters of Princess Diana.

4. Kate’s subtle nod to Princess Diana

The Duchesses are known to pay tribute to their late mother-in-law from time to time, and in this instance, it was Kate who chose to wear a pair of earrings belonging to Diana.

The Collingwood pearl earrings are the same pair the late Princess wore for Harry’s christening in 1984.

5. We may know who Archie’s godparents are

After revealing to the public that the godparents of Archie will be kept a secret, British media has reported that the Duke of Sussex’s best friend Charlie van Straubenzee, who has previously been known as Harry’s “wingman” has been given the honour.

It is also alleged that Harry’s nanny Tiggy Legge Bourke is the baby’s godmother.

6. We finally got to see Archie’s hair colour

People have been waiting with bated breath to see if Archie has taken after his dad in the hair department, and it seems like he has.

By the looks of it, Archie has red hair just like the Prince himself.

The surprising details around baby Archie’s christening – and why his godparents might be revealed after all

Despite the Duke and Duchess of Sussex previously announcing they would not release the details of who Archie’s godparents will be, it seems the public will still get to find out.

According to the Parochial Registers and Records Measure (1978), the royal couple will not legally be able to conceal the name of their newborn son’s godparents.

The English rule means that all baptisms, including details like the name of godparents for example, are a matter of public record and can be viewed by anyone for a $50 fee.

This information comes to light after Buckingham Palace shared that both Prince Harry and his wife, Duchess Meghan, would keep baby Archie’s christening as a private ceremony.
<blockquote style="background: #FFF; Archie’s christening date revealed: Here’s when the world will see Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan’s son

Baby Archie’s christening is right around the corner with the date being set for Saturday, July 6.

The milestone will take place in Windsor Castle – a location the Duke and Duchess of Sussex chose for the occasion because they “wanted an intimate, peaceful setting in a place with such a special connection to Her Majesty,” a royal insider told People.

Unlike previous christenings within the family, the event will be quite small with only 25 close family members attending. It’s typical for royal christenings to only have close family, friends and godparents invited, but Harry and Meghan took it one step further by releasing photographs the next day rather than the day of.

“This is a beautiful milestone and they are excited to share it as a family first and then with the world,” says the insider.

The Queen’s private chapel holds an immense amount of significance for the royal family, as the room was built for Queen Victoria in 1840 to 1847. After being burnt down by the Windsor fire in 1992, it was rebuilt in 1994 with modern improvements.

The larger St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle was the venue for Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan’s wedding in May 2018. Harry was also christened there in 1984.

Why Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan's christening plan is attracting criticism

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are set to break another royal tradition as the couple is reportedly planning to have a private christening for their one-month-old son next week.

The christening of Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor – which will take place at St George's Chapel at Windsor Castle – will be off-limits to media, royal sources told The Sunday Times. Prince William and Duchess Kate allowed fans to line up around the grounds for Prince George’s christening in 2013, Princess Charlotte’s in 2015 and Prince Louis’ in 2018.

Prince Charles and the late Princess Diana also did the same for their sons, Prince William and Prince Harry.

Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie were also photographed with their parents, Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson, before and after their christenings.

The plan has been slammed by royal biographer Penny Junor, who claimed the couple “can’t have it both ways” after they came under fire for spending £2.4 million of taxpayers’ money to revamp their Frogmore Cottage residence.

Junor told The Times: “Either they are totally private, pay for their own house and disappear out of view or play the game the way it is played.

“Seeing Archie and his godparents arriving at the christening is what people are interested in … If they want it to be really private, hold it in a parish church, not St George’s Chapel where royal ceremonies are held.”

According to reports, Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan have only invited 25 family and friends to the special event. The senior royal who could miss baby Archie’s christening

Good news for royal fans. It seems that we’ll be getting a glimpse of Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor sooner than expected.

It’s only been six weeks since the world welcomed the little one with open arms, and apparently the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have already picked a date and venue for their son’s christening.

According to The Sunday Times, Prince Harry and Meghan have planned to baptise Archie in St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle next month.

The location is fitting as it’s also where Harry’s baptism took place in 1984, and where the couple said their vows in May 2018.

The ceremony is likely to be led by the Dean of Windsor, the Reverend David Conner, and the Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby.

Reportedly, the Duchess has formed a close bond with Archbishop Welby, who officiated the pair's wedding last year.

Avid followers can expect to see plenty of members from the royal household, but there will be a senior figure missing from the occasion.

The Times reports that Queen Elizabeth II will be “absent on other duties”, which is why she will not be able to make the christening of her eighth great-grandchild.

While her absence may seem odd, this isn’t the first time the monarch has missed an important occasion, as she did not attend the christening of Prince Louis last year.

Since his birth on May 6, the public have only seen glimpses of little Archie, but that will soon change once the baptism occurs.

Along with the christening, an important question will be answered: Who will be Baby Sussex’s godparents?

Royalists have been waiting with bated breath for the announcement, with royal commentator Camilla Tominey putting her money on one person in particular: Princess Eugenie.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if I saw Princess Eugenie’s name in there, simply because they got married at a similar time and Eugenie and Harry are very close cousins,” said Tominey.

Regardless of who gets the honour, Archie won’t be short on godparents, as the royal family is known to give their children numerous godmothers and godfathers.

Why guests at Prince Louis' christening were served 7-year-old cake

The royal family celebrated Prince Louis’ christening on Monday and before the ceremony, Kensington Palace released official details – including the fact that guests would be served “slices of christening cake, which is a tier taken from The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s wedding cake.”

As you will remember, Prince William and Kate Middleton wed back in 2011 and their wedding cake was a traditional eight-tier fruitcake, comprising of 17 individual fruit cakes, and decorated with roughly 900 flowers and leaves using cream and white icing.

The announcement certainly raised a few eyebrows on social media, with many questioning why the Cambridges’ were serving seven-year-old cake and whether the cake was even safe to eat.

British custom dictates couple’s serve wedding cake each time their child is christened. That means Late and William will have eaten their wedding cake on four separate occasions by the end of their youngest child Louis’ christening.

As to whether it’s safe to consume such old cake, Benjamin Chapman, an assistant professor and food safety extension specialist at North Carolina State University, tells Yahoo Lifestyle while there are some risk factors, it is probably OK to consume.

“If people can get past the taste of it, from a food safety standpoint it’s probably OK,” Benjamin says.

See pictures from Prince Louis' chirstening here.

Prince Harry’s incredibly rare $15,000 christening gift for Prince Louis

To celebrate his nephew’s christening, Prince Harry has forked out $15,000 for a very thoughtful gift for three-month-old Prince Louis.

According to reports, the Duke of Sussex bought a rare first-edition copy of A.A. Milne’s Winnie-the-Pooh, which dates back to 1926.

Harry is believed to have purchased the book from Peter Harrington, a rare book store in London.

It is understood that Harry has decided to build up a library for his two nephews and niece, in memory of his mum, the late Princess Diana.

“One of Harry’s happiest childhood memories was being read a bedtime story by his mother,” a palace insider revealed to The Sun.

“She loved all the old classics and Harry had the brilliant idea of starting a little library of first editions for Louis, Charlotte and George to enjoy as they get older.”

According to the palace source, Harry originally planned to buy a copy of Lewis Carol’s Through The Looking Glass to mark the occasion – which would’ve set him back $46,490 – but he decided Winnie-the-Pooh was more age appropriate.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were among just 30 guests invited to the intimate christening.

Members of the Royal Family arrive at the Chapel Royal, St James's Palace for the christening of Prince Louis.

A post shared by Kensington Palace (@kensingtonroyal) on Jul 9, 2018 at 8:25am PDT

Meghan wore an olive Ralph Lauren dress with a Stephen Jones fascinator to the ceremony.

Prior to the christening, Meghan was seen laughing with the Most Reverend Justin Welby, who also baptised her before her wedding to Prince Harry in May.

The couple were seen holding hands as they walked behind Prince William and Kate, before entering Chapel Royal and St James’s Palace in London.
