Maintaining friendships after a dementia diagnosis can spur feelings of joy and self-worth

Colleen Whyte, Brock University; Darla Fortune, Concordia University, and Rebecca Genoe, University of Regina

What would our lives be like if we could no longer depend on our most cherished friendships? The people who know us best, who have been there through our ups and downs, and share a history with us?

For many people living with dementia, this is a reality. Over 500,000 Canadians are currently living with dementia, and a diagnosis often leads to a loss of friendships and social opportunities.

The reactions of friends greatly affect the experience of someone living with dementia. When friends distance themselves because they don’t know what to say or presume they no longer know how to interact with their friend, a person with dementia can experience feelings of isolation and loneliness.

When people living with dementia can depend on their friends, they continue to enjoy meaningful leisure activities, experience feelings of joy and self-worth, and see themselves as valued members of their social circles.

Our research had us interview friends together, asking them to share tips and strategies for navigating dementia. We heard moving stories of deepened bonds of friendship, genuine acceptance and the joy of simply being together.

Adapting to changes

Our research allowed us to speak with people who shared a 70-year friendship and couldn’t imagine life without each other. We learned that for some, a neighbourhood walk together was an opportunity to say a quick hello and how a weekly trip to the pub enabled some friends to connect and re-connect in a familiar space.

People living with dementia and their friends may adapt to changes brought about by the diagnosis in several ways. For example, they may prioritize their friendship by setting aside time for regular phone calls and visits. They may alter the way they think about the friendship by being accepting of the changes. They may also use practical strategies, like providing reminders for plans, and offering additional support when spending time together.

Friends of individuals living with dementia may seek ways to continue enjoying meaningful time together. Sometimes this involves identifying activities that are comfortable and familiar. It may also involve providing direction and encouragement to support the continuation of enjoyable experiences, such as visiting a favourite restaurant.

For some, additional comfort may come from hanging out as a group because there is extra support available if needed.

Open and honest communication

Open and honest communication is key to maintaining any friendship and becomes particularly important following a diagnosis of dementia. Yet, that may be the biggest challenge.

Below are some questions that friends might find helpful to ask over a cup of coffee, on a walk or in a quiet, shared moment:

What do you value about our friendship? Can I tell you what our friendship means to me?

What is one thing I do that makes you laugh? Here’s something you do that makes me laugh…

How can we make sure we maintain our friendship (i.e., talk on the phone, over the internet, go for coffee)? How often do you want to connect? How do we need to change our time together? Finding joy at age 100: Talking to centenarians about living their best life at any age

Heather Joyce Nelson, University of Regina; Beverlee Ziefflie, Saskatchewan Polytechnic, and Paula Mayer, Saskatchewan Polytechnic

Aging is seen as a period of loss, and there are unhelpful myths about older adults. Myths lead to treatable conditions being considered normal parts of aging, including cognitive decline, dementia, depression and loneliness. Some even consider exercise dangerous in older adults.

At the same time, mainstream media promotes the message that being young is central to a person’s value. These ideas lead to ageism and older adults being seen as lesser.

After spending time with six female centenarians in assisted living facilities, our research team — which included four nursing researchers and a documentary filmmaker — learned there is plenty still worth living for.

Centenarians are a small but growing segment of the population with 13,844 centenarians in Canada, and our findings debunk myths about the experience of aging.

We asked the centenarians questions about what brings them joy and how they plan for the future because we wanted to learn how the very elderly plan for and find ways to live their best lives. The results of this study were turned into a 32-minute documentary that captures participants’ long and interesting lives and offers insight into continued meaning experienced by centenarians in their daily lives. Three of the centenarians died shortly after the interviews took place.

Long and interesting lives

The participants were born between the years 1919 and 1922. They were children during the Great Depression and young adults during the Second World War.

One of the women helped build bullet casings and worked on the Lancaster bomber. Another woman helped her husband protect the blueprints of the ill-fated Avro Arrow aircraft when he brought them home from work. Two women lost their husbands when their children were small and had to go to work to support their families. They all experienced love and adventure.

Our team was fascinated by their stories and wanted to further explore what their lives look like today.

Betty, 101, saw happiness as a choice. “I don’t know what’s really to complain about. I went through life staying happy,” she said.

Joy and challenges

This study used a research method called thematic analysis to find four themes: Finding Joy, Act your Age, Looking Forward and Putting Challenges into Perspective.

The centenarians found joy each day and enjoyed the little things such as activities, visits and treats. Betty enjoyed cheating at solitaire and Jean, 100, played the piano. Clementina, 101, had fun gambling and Joyce, 100, continued to write stories and watch her grandchildren in music concerts.

Family was central to their lives and they enjoyed spending time with their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Two of the women stated that raising their children was the biggest accomplishment in their lives.

The centenarians also found great joy in reminiscing about their interesting lives. However, one of the challenges was that there was no one left alive who had the same shared experiences.

Limitations

The centenarians were constrained by the limitations of society, their bodies and their self-perceptions. “You have to act your age,” said Clementina. She physically described this phenomenon by clasping her hands together in her lap and sitting still.

Some participants found life to be boring at 100 compared to their lives as younger adults. They had limited opportunities to do what they would like. “We had homes,” said Joyce, 100, describing how they had known better lives, which made it hard to accept the constraints of their current existence.

In spite of these feelings, many of the participants continued to be busy and live life fully despite limitations. Jean, despite needing a wheelchair for mobility, continues to do people’s taxes for a volunteer organization, plays piano for church services and leads choirs within her facility.

“I am constantly rebelling against my situation physically,” she said.

The other women in this study also continued to challenge norms of what their age and disabilities meant. Joyce writes and submits short stories for publication, and has a poem in the war archives in Ottawa.

Assisted living facilities often prioritize resident safety, but this can come at a cost to personal freedom. Some residents only leave their facility accompanied by a facility employee or a family member. Clementina rebelled against this restriction and at the age of 97, snuck out of her assisted living facility in a cab to go to the casino, pretending that she was going to meet her son.

All of the participants put their life challenges into perspective. They all had lost spouses, friends and some had lost their children. “I was broken,” Clementina said about losing her husband.

Christine, 102, was asked how she managed after losing her husband when her children were still small. “I am still here,” she said.

The future

Most of the centenarians had few plans for themselves for the future and were more interested in leading their day-to-day lives. Betty jokingly described the inevitability of her death and that she was “looking for the bucket.” Most described being prepared to die except for Jean, who laughed and said she didn’t have time to die. “I have too many plans.”

The centenarians looked to the future of their families and the larger community and entrusted the next generation to make good choices.

Participants in this study had long and interesting lives and continued to find meaning each day. This study supports the idea that older adults continue to lead engaging lives and that we need to support older adults to live their best lives at any age.

This article was also co-authored by journalist and filmmaker Kelly-Anne Riess and retired nursing instructor Susan Page.<!-- Below is The Conversation's page counter tag. Why we should embrace the joy of dressing ‘outside of the lines’ like Gen Z

Steven Wright, University of South Wales and Gwyneth Moore, University of South Wales

Have you seen that cargo pants are back? Young people are once again swishing down hallways and they might even be wearing Crocs on their feet, because these are cool now too. For many this could be seen as dressing “badly” but Y2K (2000s fashion) is all the rage at the moment.

Fashion has long been one of the most creative playgrounds to express yourself and also define your personal identity and status. Gen Z take this very seriously. However, they are no mere followers of fashion but are adventurously carving out their own trends and styles – joyfully playing with the way they dress and express themselves through their clothes.

Gen Z are rejecting everything from outdated gender tropes to curated colour schemes and the idea of the “perfect” body.

For several hundred years, it was the fashion industry who controlled what was on trend. It was in bed with the media, style icons, designers and the tycoons of the industry. This relationship has enabled trends to be predicted and for aesthetic movements to be planned and consumers to be catered for. The masses watched and waited to be told what was new and “hot”.

This relationship is now being short-circuited by a generation of digital natives who live in a world where the distinction between the digital and the physical is blended.

Gen Z will not be dictated to, they are not anxiously waiting to be told they are on trend, on social media they are making heir own trends by breaking rules, embracing creativity and finding joy in dressing bravely.

The democratisation of fashion

Each generation has changed fashion. The baby boomers brought us flower power in the 1960s and 1970s using free love in contrast to their parents’ clearly defined social and gender roles.

Boomers’ younger siblings brought us “punk” in the 1970s and 1980s, a subculture dedicated to using the symbols of the state against itself and deliberately playing with the obscene and vulgar. This was amid a global political climate of conservatism and repression.

Then again in the 1990s we saw grunge, Gen X’s response to a futureless world post-cold war.

Well, Gen X have had children and those kids have decided that they find joy in dressing outside of the lines (so to speak), you can be anything, you can be everything and you can be nothing.

Gen Z (and even millenials) have witnessed the ever-increasing democratisation of fashion through social media sharing and the global reach of online platforms. They have seen thousands of tiny subcultures formed online where they undergo a near constant cycle of evolution, explosion and reformation.

Take the early 2000s “emo” trend. Once a big subculture, it was thrust to the corners of the internet where everyone thought it would languish and die.

However, emo is experiencing a revival with people wearing all black, corsets becoming cool again and heavy eye makeup being sported by the likes of Gen Z darlings Willow Smith and Olivia Rodrigo.

But Gen Z are not sticking to one style. Fashion has become a pick and mix of trends and ideas where an individual can use the ingredients to create and recreate identity as often as they desire. There is joy in dressing, not fear. There are no rules.

No rules

As new fashion consumers gleefully reinvent notions of good taste and beauty, the traditional trickle-down effect for trends has been replaced by a bubbling up from new sources defining what’s new and what’s next. From Instagrammers to icons, vloggers and TikTokkers, the sources for trends are broad and varied.

Young people are creating their own place in a new world. A world where crocs are high fashion and what “goes” is in the eye of the beholder. Boxers as a headdress or leggings as scarf? sure. Why not even wear a keyboard as a top? Maximalism is being taken to new extremes as clothes are layered over more clothes and no colour, object or pattern is out of bounds.

These are the COVID kids, a generation that came of age during a global calamity where the only form of communication was digital and two-dimensional.

The loudest and boldest and most insane outfit is the one that will get you most attention on screen. For kids used to consuming media through TikToks rather than glossy editorials, only the most dramatic, fun and playful will do. Fashion has taken itself way too seriously for way too long. A cleansing fire of young, creative people is exactly what is needed right now. We should all take a page out their book and find joy in dressing in whatever we want.<!-- Below is The Conversation's page counter tag. Bruce Willis' birthday joy

After spending 25 years in remission, she confirmed her cancer had returned for the third time in September 2018.

As her health declined in recent years, Newton-John largely steered away from the public eye and was seen only a handful of times over the past year.

The last time fans saw her speaking on camera was when she posted a Christmas message to her Instagram followers on Christmas Day, 2021.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Olivia Newton-John (@therealonj)

“I want to thank you all for all of your support over the years and I wish you all the best and send you love and light.”

Her last TV appearance came a few months before that, in October of 2021, when she made a guest appearance on Dancing With The Stars for the show’s Grease-themed night.

As contestants paid tribute to the cult-classic staring herself and John Travolta, Newton appeared via a video message to wish them well.

“I’m so thrilled and honoured that you’re celebrating Grease tonight! Meet the ute-driving pup bringing joy to the world

The owners of a now-viral pup who was filmed behind the wheel of a work ute have been blown away by the fact that their innocent video has brought so much joy to people around the world.

Lexi the Jack Russell was recorded steering the Zschech family ute around a paddock on their farm in south-western Victoria – and the global responses they have received have been overwhelming.

"I've had messages from Finland, Canada, America, Great Britain," Cam Zschech, Lexi's owner, told A Current Affair.

"It took off a bit more than I thought. I had all these people messaging me. I can't believe it. I still can't believe it really."

Ian and Cam have a 1500-acre farm just outside Hamilton, Victoria, and they run grain crops and have about 2000 ewes.

"I've been here (for) the long 21 years of my life. It's a place that I'll probably be forever," Cam said.

"We got Lexi about 14 months ago. She was really quiet when we got her. We thought we had a good one, but she's turned out to be so much more than that."

As it turned out, Lexi has become an internet sensation after her efforts behind the wheel.

"I learned to drive with Dad in the passenger seat. We'd put it in low gear and we'd idle along and I would steer. I thought I'd try and teach Lexi," Cam said.

The attention that their pooch has received has brought the father and son even closer together.

"It's great," Ian said. "And here we are, near Hamilton. It's a beautiful part of the world."

For those wondering just how accomplished Lexi is behind the wheel, don't overthink it. To efficiently feed all the sheep, Cam often leaves the ute in low gear and Lexi jumps on the back to distribute hay around the paddock.

However, Lexi's latest role, where she sits up in the driver seat, is only to make people smile. She’s only ever left in the ute on their property, in a controlled environment, along a flat paddock.

Cam and Ian said they are just out to give everyone a laugh.

Image: A Current Affair

Tears of joy after toddler found alive

After going missing for over three days in bushland near Putty in NSW, three-year-old toddler Anthony 'AJ' Elfalak, has been found alive in a creek.

His father and family broke down crying tears of joy after his son was found alive after frantic searching for the boy by an SES rescue team and squads of police.

Anthony Elfalak went missing on Friday about 11.45 am from his house in Putty, a rural town about 150km northwest of Sydney.

His mother said he would never wandered off and she feared he’d been abducted.

AJ was last seen playing at his family's 256ha rural property. AJ, who has autism and is non-verbal, was last seen playing on the porch and his mother says he was out of her sight for just a matter of seconds.

Spotted in a creek by helicopter

The youngster was spotted in a creek less than two kilometres away from a helicopter on Monday morning, police confirmed.

He was whisked away in an ambulance with his mother, to be taken to hospital for a full assessment.

The news sparked emotional scenes at the family property, where AJ's parents and friends were seen cheering and screaming in delight moments after being told he had been found.

AJ was dehydrated, drenched in water from the creek and “a little skinnier than usual” but otherwise well, his family said.

Ms Elfalak dropped to the feet of police officers as they assured her that her youngest son was alive and in the care of paramedics.

For the next 15 minutes, loved ones sprinted from every direction, shouting the extraordinary news again and again.

AJ's mum Kelly was overcome with emotion as she thanked everyone involved.

“Thank you for everyone. Thank you for the government. Thank you for the police. Thank you very much,” she said.

“Thank you to my friend, my cousin, my sisters, my family. Thank you, everybody and whoever prayed for us.”

“We searched this area again and again,” a family friend said who has spent the last four days trawling the unforgiving terrain.

“We never even noticed the creek, and that’s where the found him. He was in the creek,” they added.

Premier says she’s “absolutely delighted”

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian was “absolutely delighted” by AJ's discovery, saying it was “much-needed good news in otherwise difficult circumstances.”

“I mean, I think all of us have been crossing everything to make sure AJ is brought back safely,” she told reporters.

Circumstances of Aj's disappearance still not clear

Only a few hours before AJ was found, family friend Alan Hashem claimed crucial security camera footage had “gone missing” from the property.

Hashem was at the property at the time AJ went missing and he claimed someone had tampered with security cameras he had installed on a tree high above the remote bushland road outside the home.

He said the time AJ went missing was in the four-hour window of footage that was now missing.

“There's one key factor and this is probably the first time I actually mentioned this, I installed cameras on that post right there,' he told reporters today.

“There's footage missing, unexplained.
