Readers response: Have you ever seen or met a member of the royal family during one of their visits?

When the royal family make one of their special, dedicated visits to Australia, some royal fans are lucky enough to catch a glimpse, or even have an interaction with them.

We asked our readers if they have ever seen or met a member of the royal family, and the response was overwhelming. Here's what they said.

Mike Rogerson - I saw the Queen and Prince Phillip on the Princes Highway at Blakehurst, NSW. They were on their way to Wollongong, NSW. We were a group of Blakehurst primary school children on the side of the road in 1954. I was eight at the time.

Lorraine Strand - First saw the Queen when the country school kids travelled by train to Adelaide. Then again in Darwin, when she was visiting houses built after Cyclone Tracy. On a more recent visit by the royals, my husband and I attended the same St Paul’s Anglican Church Service in Canberra as the Queen and Prince Phillip.

Annette Maree - I saw the Queen when she was driven past my house in the 1960’s. She was stunning. I clearly remember her wave, her smile, and her “peaches and cream” complexion. It was one of those flashbulb moments that stays in your mind forever.

Glenda Grange - Yes in 1983 I saw Diana and Charles. They attended a royal command performance in Melbourne. I received a formal gilt edge invitation and was one person away from them. I was invited as a bush fire victim of Ash Wednesday.

Elaine Smith - I haven’t but my mum and grandpa did, in 1954 when she came to our small country town of Red Cliffs, VIC. My grandpa and mum were on a special platform with aged residents of country towns, even got to shake hands with her. I was in the crowd with my girl guide group.

Gary Johnson - 1970 when I was in first year high school we went to Perth airport to see Prince Phillip arrive. I had a school blazer on and Prince Phillip came over and asked what school I was from. If it wasn't for my mum forcing me to wear it, I wouldn't have that great memory.

Janice Yvonne Colman - Not in Australia, but in the UK when they passed by our village on way to a county close by. My brother & I got the royal waves as we stood on the side of the road! We were quite thrilled as we were only 14 & 12 at the time.

Jean Bryant - I saw Princess Margaret back in the 50's when she visited a British Air Force base in Germany.

Ian Hewitt - Yes! At NSW Government house in 1992. It was an honour to us to personally meet their majesties.

Woman seeks advice over family member’s list of “stupid” baby names

A woman has asked for advice after seeing her cousin’s list of potential baby names, with many of them being classed as “just stupid”.

The woman took to Reddit to explain how her cousin sent her baby name list to her family group chat, and no one has yet replied.

"This was all sent in a family group chat and no-one has replied yet. I feel bad because at least she has put some thought into these names, especially compared to how most of us were named. On the other hand, well, you saw the names," the woman posted on Reddit.

The names her cousin has shared and her logic behind them include:

Urf (Earth..because no matter where the child lives in life, it will always be on Earth. Can't fault the logic on that one – Elon Musk might take umbrage though.)

Seaeoh (CEO. Apparently names dictate destiny and this name will cosmically transform the child into a successful business magnate.)

Stamp (She was in a long distance relationship with the father for a while and they used to send each other letters with...stamps. Sounds like what a caveman character in a film would be called.)

Biotic (Connected to antibiotic. This will protect the child from disease. Antibiotic would be and I quote, 'Ridiculous because it would sound like 'Aunty' which would cultivate bullying because she would sound old.')

Ayeai (AI. In the future AI will take over and if it turns nasty it will go easy on her kid because they share a name.)

The woman explained that her cousin's logic for going with something very different for a name is "so many children nowadays have unique names that it will eventually become normal and people with 'standard' names will be the ones looking foolish."

She also added that her cousin's husband isn't "brave enough" to say anything about the names and hopes she will lose interest.

The people of Reddit had a lot to say about the choices, with one person commenting, “Those are all just terrible."

"I say this in the kindest way possible. She is delusional and I dare say, stupid. That poor future child deserves better," wrote another user.

Another suggested a normal name might actually be unique now and wrote, "Having a 'standard' name is what is unique now. How many kids are being named David and Lisa?"

7 tips to help turn your cat into a friendly member of the family

How to make your cat love you

Getting a cat to be more affectionate is the yearning of many a pet owner. Some cats are antisocial when it comes to being picked up, cuddled or petted (much less sitting in a person’s lap). Other kitties are born loving this sort of attention.

If you’re not lucky enough to have a cat who automatically seeks out your affection, trying to entice that reclusive furball to become your snuggle buddy may take some motivation and determination on your part. Your pet may never convert to a drooly lap cat, even after weeks of effort on your part, but at the very least you’ll probably strengthen your relationship with your cat.

Get the basics down

The initial stage of coaxing a cat into being more lovable is to let her recognise your positive intentions by dependably offering her good food, clean water, fun toys to play with and a litterbox that is cleaned regularly. When she’s happier, you’ll be happier, and these mutual good feelings will carry over into your relationship together.

Spend extra time with your cat, letting her see you not as her owner but as her friend, meal provider and guardian. If she’s not coming up to you to say hi, be proactive: Walk over to her (as long as she’s not super-shy) and lavish affection on her. Once she gets used to all this attention, she might very well start seeking it out from you.

Be affectionate while feeding

While preparing her food (or making a production of opening that can of food), talk to your kitty. When she begins eating, gently stroke her a few times. This will help her associate being petted with a positive experience.

Be playful

Instead of trying to force a hug from your reluctant cat, play with her a little, maybe getting her to paw at a piece of string or chase after a laser pointer.

Try a little catnip

Bringing out a tin of catnip often brings timid felines out of their shells, and aloof cats sometimes become far friendlier under the influence of catnip.

Use the "slow blink"

Remember that using the “slow blink” as a non-verbal statement saying “I love you” will go a much longer way with your cat, versus a direct stare, which she may take as a threat.

Don't chase

Don’t try to push affection on your cat – for example, running after her. This might work with a dog, but chasing usually causes a scaredy cat to jolt off in another direction feeling victimised. And I should hope it goes without saying, but don’t punish or yell at your shy cat.

Give them a treat

Each time you share a session of tenderness with your cat, give her a treat. Let her see that this affectionate behaviour has its rewards.

This article originally appeared on Reader's Digest.

5 juicy confessions from cruise crew members

As you can probably imagine, when living on the high seas you get to pick up a story or two. While while most of these tales don’t make it back to shore, for the first time ever a few of these interesting stories have made their way to land.

Porthole Cruise Magazine has explored the industry to find five of the juiciest confessions from cruise crew members. You’ll never look at cruise staff the same way.

And of course, the staff member’s names have been kept anonymous.

1. One shore excursions manager told about the time she was woken up by 3am as two colleagues burst into her cabin. She said, “They woke up my roommate and I and were shouting to get our lifejackets on and to abandon ship, and then they ran out of the room. My roommate and I started freaking out, bumping into each other trying to find our lifejackets. Then we ran out of the room down the hallway in our pyjamas — only to be met by an entire group of crew members taking pictures and laughing. That was just Part One of our initiation.”

2. A cruise gift shop manager told Porthole about a dispute between dining room staff and restaurant management which resulted in a strike. As a result, staff managers from the other sections of the boat had to fill in, everyone from the casino to the beauty shop. She said, “We were instructed to bring as many of our staff members as we could spare to help serve more than 500 hungry guests. So there we all went, in our respective uniforms, off to the dining room to be waiters for the evening. I’m not sure how we did it, but we did. All of the guests managed to get their rolls, salads, entrées, coffee, and dessert while being served by an eclectic staff in an assortment of uniforms. That was the essence of good teamwork if I’ve ever seen it.”

3. Another anonymous cruise staff member told of a game she played when greeting guests walking into the dining room. She and her offsider decided to make a game of inserting wacky words into conversation. She said, “One of the most memorable words that we actually pulled off quite well, and surprisingly without realisation or offence to the guests, was penis. How? Guest walks through the door…. cruise staff says ‘Good Evening! Have you just come from the lounge? They have an amazing penis playing up there and the sing-a-long is great fun!” Guest smiled and answered: “YES! The pianist is one of the best I’ve seen on ships!’”

4. A cruise casino dealer recalls, “One of the hardest things I had to do as a casino dealer was to keep a straight face. And I’m not necessarily talking about because we were in the middle of an intense game. I’m talking about the times when certain guests, well, smelled. One time a player sat at my table and was letting out such bad gas that other players began to slowly inch away and eventually left the area. Truth be told: No matter what sights – and smells – I encountered, it was always a challenge to remain neutral. Perhaps this is the true origin of the term ‘poker face.’

5. A cabin steward told the story of cruisers who were continually complaining about bites. After three nights of complaints he, “Advised them to visit the onboard infirmary to see if they could identify the ‘bites’ and see if there was something that could be done for them. The nurse in the infirmary concluded that neither of them had bug bites, and that the red scratches on their arms were caused simply by their own fingernails. On the fourth day, the couple marched up to the front office and announced they had found the bugs and showed the guest relations manager a box containing the ‘bugs.’ When I was called to the front office to look at the bugs, everyone was laughing in disbelief. The guests had presented them with a small box full of lint.”

Image: Shutterstock

Tourist cops earful from member of Queen’s Guard

A tourist has learned the hard way to not interfere with the Queen’s guards, after she copped an earful from a guard for grabbing his horse’s reins.

During a recent trip to London, the woman went to pose for a photo next to the guard and his horse when her hand went to reach towards the animal, drawing the guard’s attention.

When she then touched the reins, he reacted by yelling with authority from atop his horse.

“Stand back from the Queen’s lifeguard, don’t touch the reins!” he yells.

A clip of the incident was shared by the woman’s step-son Ethan on TikTok, with the caption, “We will never return to London after this incident” and text across the footage reading, “Queens Guard Verbally Attacks My Step mum [sic]”.

Though Ethan commented the guard as a “rather angry little man”, a large number of commenters sided with the guard, arguing that he has an important job to do and that working animals like his horse shouldn’t be touched while on duty.

Image: TikTok

“It’s not Disney they are working horses and serving army,” one person said.

“Serves her right, you aren’t allowed to touch the guard,” another wrote.

“They have a job, just don’t go near them,” a third added.

British followers were particularly quick to defend his actions and respond to their decision not to return to London.

“The whole of London is so upset that you won’t be returning we’re all begging you to come back,” one person said.

“Every British person I know knows you don’t touch them, or is she one of them ones that would put her hand in the blender,” another wrote.

As some commenters pointed out, the horse’s reins are connected to the animal’s mouth - which is quite sensitive - and tugging on the reins could spook the animal, causing it to bite her or unseat the guard.

Others compared interfering with or touching the guard and his horse to doing the same to a guide dog, while 9Honey royal reporter Natalie Oliveri explained that as a rule, you shouldn’t touch animals that are on-duty.

"Also, as a general rule tourists should be respectful of any member of Her Majesty's guard while they are on duty – they are there for an important reason and no one should try to interfere with that,” Oliveri said.

She explained that it’s also best not to speak to members of the Queen’s Guard while they’re on duty, and that you shouldn’t expect a response from them.

"If you would like a photo, perhaps it's best to stand at a respectable distance and never interfere with their job,” she added.

Images: TikTok

Religious group members charged over eight-year-old’s death

Members of a religious group in southern Queensland have been charged over the death of an eight-year-old girl earlier this year.

Elizabeth Struhs died on January 7 at her home in Rangeville, Toowoomba, after she was allegedly denied insulin for the treatment of her type 1 diabetes for about six days, per the ABC.

Five men and six women have been charged as a result, with one 60-year-old man being charged with one count of murder and failing to supply the necessities of life, while the remaining eleven - aged between 19 and 65 years old - have been charged with one count of murder.

Elizabeth’s parents, Jason and Kerrie Struhs, have previously been charged with murder, torture, and failing to provide the necessities of life.

Police allege the dozen involved were aware of Elizabeth’s condition and didn’t seek medical assistance, adding that emergency services weren’t contacted until about 5.30pm on January 8.

It is alleged the parents and other members of the religious group prayed for Elizabeth’s recovery instead.

The charges laid against them come after six months of investigation by the Toowoomba Child Protection and Investigation Unit, the Child Trauma Unit, and the Homicide Investigation Unit.

More than 30 officers conducted a search at a residence in Harristown, where the 12 residents were arrested.

Detective Acting Superintendent Gary Watts said the investigation was unlike anything he had ever seen.

“In my 40 years of policing, I’ve never faced a matter like this,” he said.

“And I’m not aware of a similar event in Queensland, let alone Australia.”

According to sources that spoke to the ABC, the religious group is small, tight-knit, and has no ties to any established church in Toowoomba.

In a fundraiser set up to support Elizabeth’s siblings, her older sister Jayde Struhs said her estranged parents were part of a “fear-driven and controlling” cult that took religion to its extremes.

She said her younger sister’s death had left their extended family “completely shattered and heartbroken”.

“We have faced the brutal reality that the people who should have protected her did not, and we may never know the full extent of what took place,” she said.

The people charged in relation to Elizabeth’s death are expected to appear in court on Wednesday, while her parents will return to court later in July.

Image: Supplied

Deadly crash claims seven family members from three generations

A Year 11 student is one of two to survive a crash that killed seven of his relatives, including his younger brother and mother.

Luie Lagud, 16, was travelling in a van with family members spanning three generations on a whirlwind trip across the length of New Zealand’s South Island when the vehicle was involved in a head-on crash with a truck on Sunday morning.

The crash left the Toyota Hiace van completely destroyed and is the deadliest incident to occur in the country since April 2019.

According to the NZ Herald, the family have since given permission for the names of the deceased to be published.

Among the victims were Diseree Brown, 48, her husband Paul Brown, 61, and their son Mark.

Desiree’s sister, 56-year-old Divine Dolar, Divine’s daughter Flordeliza Dolar, 19, were also among those who died.

Luie and his older brother, 26-year-old Pedro Clariman, were the only two to survive.

However, Luie was in a coma and undergoing surgery on Monday after suffering significant spinal and head injuries and remains in intensive care.

Pedro’s partner and his infant daughter, Mika, tragically died in the crash.

Diseree’s three other children, David, Princess, and Joanna, didn’t travel with the family.

The night before, the family stayed in Rolleston, outside Christchurch, with a family friend. The man who identified himself as Bill called Newstalk ZB on Monday to confirm members of the “vibrant” family had died.

“They spent some of their last hours on earth with me on Saturday night, Sunday morning,” he told Canterbury Mornings host John MacDonald.

Having left Bill’s home at 2.30am on Sunday morning to catch a Cook Strait ferry back to the North Island, the van crossed the centreline and collided with a refrigerated goods truck in Picton at about 7.30am.

The truck driver suffered minor injuries.

The family had started their journey by travelling to Gore for the funeral of an elderly aunt, which 21-year-old David Lagud said he didn’t attend because he had to work and because he suffered from motion sickness.

“In a blink of an eye, it’s all gone,” David told the NZ Herald.

Videos posted throughout the trip showed the family laughing together, spending time with Pedro’s young daughter, and travelling across the country.

Since the incident, the principal of Pukekohe High School - which two of the family members were attending - emailed parents to advise them that two students were involved in the crash.

“One of our Year 10 students died at the scene of the accident.
