The surprising reason tourists could soon be boycotting Bali

The surprising reason tourists could soon be boycotting Bali

Indonesia is now considering a law that will ban the production, distribution and consumption of alcohol across the country, meaning big changes for its most famous holiday destination spot.

Industry professionals have warned that the move would have a dire impact on Bali’s tourism industry and even lead to the sale of illegal, and highly dangerous, bootleg alcohol.

Due largely to the cost of importing liquor, Bali has seen a rise in the sale of unregulated, home-brewed drinks that are laced with methanol, and have been linked to a number of deaths.

The law is currently being discussed by the House of Representatives after being brought forward by two of the countries Islamic parties; the United Development Party and the Prosperous Justice Party. It suggests that there should be a restriction to any drink containing over one per cent alcohol.

Indonesia’s beverage importers also cautioned their already struggling industry would be crippled if the law was passed.

Imported liquor contributes to up to 10 per cent of Indonesia’s liquor consumption and as many as 17 beverage importers and distributors are expected to collapse in the wake of a booze ban, should it be passed.
